I disagree...it would be the hit Mo Lewis put on Bledsoe. That is truly the #1 Sports moment since 2001. We can all say it was this or that...but none of the greatness happens without that one play.

While AV's kick was and still is an amazing moment, I have to agree with this.

I think the Gatorade being poored over BB and his dad should be in the top five.

In conclusion

2001 Patriots / 2004 Red Sox = An awesome revival of successful Boston sports teams, in fairy tale fashion.

I love the Pats and Sox equally, but Boston is still a baseball town first. Has to be a 2004 moment, ergo, #1 moment in Boston sports history:

Final out of 2004 world series. I also got the most phone calls after that one. ;)

I agree that AV's winning kick was number 1. It's what started the whole thing, once the Pats won the SB it was like anything can happen...even them winning more SB's (including back-to-back)...and gasp, even the Red Sox finally winning again! The Celtics championship was just icing on the cake. The whole roll we're on started with that winning kick....

I agree, Boston is a "Baseball Town"...but with that being said, the Red Sox have had huge pay rolls and have brought in big name free agents in their quest for a championship. They were also in the ALCS in 2003, the year before the won the World Series. The Patriots were 5-11 in 2000, lost their franchase QB in week 2 of 2001 so winning Super Bowl XXXVI was so unexpected and truly a miracle. Plus, let's be honest, the Pats were historically one of the most disrespected teams in NFL history.

I am a firm believer the success of the Patriots directly contributed to the success of the Red Sox and the Celtics over the past 7 years. When our lowest viewed professional professional sports team wins a championship, the expectations went through the roof for the Sox and Celtics.

So, with that being said...Mo Lewis's hit on Drew Bledsoe is responsible for 6 Boston campionships.

Honestly, I have to rank the 2004 WS higher.

2001 Patriots was a 6 win turnaround following the loss of the franchise QB. It was also a major upset over a heavily favored SB opponent, and really sent the two franchises in opposite directions. But imagine this? If the Pats win that game, then don't go on to win two more and become a dominant team in the decade, does it matter as much? Sure, it was a great moment, but if it was one and done, and we had more seasons like 2002 (9-7, no playoffs), we'd revere it the same way we do any one-hit wonder. The moment itself doesn't stand up as much without the subsequent success.

2004 Red Sox have so many things going for them in this regard. First championship in 86 years. Not only beating their hated rival (who, despite the comment about Red Sox payroll, had an even higher payroll by far), not only hobbling out a bloody sock Curt Schilling, but beating becoming the only team in the history of baseball to come back from 3-0 down. That simultanesouly made the Yankees the biggest chokers in baseball history.

Anyone who followed that team all year, from the Nomar trade, to the 19-6 drubbing in game 3 of the ALCS, watched every game of that series without breathing. The extra innings HR by Papi, every game (save game seven) coming down to the wire. I remember driving home from work during game six, and hearing the A-Rod slap play in the car, then running in from the driveway parked diagonally to join my buddies to see what the hell happened!

It was one full week of pure, unending tension, that suddenly lifted the collective weight of GENERATIONS of boston sports fans from an 86 year old drought.

I love the Patriots, probably more than the Red Sox, but I can't top that memory with anything thus far. 19-0 would have been close, but it wasn't to be. 2004 was quite simply the most memorably story in Boston sports history.

That list is ridiculous.

I think AV's field goal v. the last out of 2004 can be debated for the top spot. Personally, I'd pick the last out of 2004 for the reasons already mentioned. That was about generations of futility being erased in a second. But that can be debated.

But to put that as number 10? Please. Then to have other Red Sox moments ahead of it?

I'm tired of arguing that Boston is no longer a "baseball town," I've posted on it before and the fact is that in Boston and New England in general, and the rest of this country for that matter, football is king. Every time there is something out there saying that the Pats or a moment in Pats history is tops in Boston sports history the Red Sox diehards feel it is their duty to come out and argue against it. This fact only further illustrates the point that the Pats are now #1 in this region.

The Globe poll that was done a couple years ago had Boston top sports achievement being winning the 2001 Super Bowl over the 2004 World Series (which came in second). It wasn't a razor thin margin, either - but it was a poll that is self-selecting.

It just goes to show that you can't always predict how these things will turn out. For me, the Patriots win in 2001 was better than the World Series win. A lot of people felt the same way.

Probably a bunch of angry Sox Yahoos after reading that article. How dare they rank anything above the Red Sox!!
I agree with it though. Not only was it an epic underdog victory and the first Super Bowl for the franchise, it also kicked off Boston/New England's athletic dominance of the decade.

...

Considering the ALCS comeback is possibly the greatest sport story ever I have to agree. If a movie were made with the exact details of the series it would be written off as unbelievable, with the drama unnecessarily laid on incredibly thick. They didn't just break an 86 year drought, but they defeated their bitter rival (and the greatest franchise in the history of the sport) in the pivotal series along the way. They didn't just beat the Yankees, but they came back from 3 games down (and off of a 19-6 drubbing). They didn't just win game 4, but did so with the greatest closer in the history of the game (at his best in the postseason) on the mound needing 3 outs to end the series. The ONLY thing that series lacked was a close game 7.

I broke a couch when Vin's kick went through, but it doesn't have nearly the effect that Robert's steal or Castiglione's "stabbed by Foulke..." call have on me.

I think these "moment" things are silly. I'll grant the snow bowl kick was extraordinary, but Brady's drive leading up to the field goal was so much more important than a kick any number of soccer players could have made.

A three run homer in the ninth is one thing but, except in rare instances, a field goal is a field goal.

It was a great kick. I'd consider the last minute drive the greatest moment. Just because there wasn't one individual play...

Hey, it gave Madden goosebumps (sorry for that image).

I completely agree with that. I feel like the Pats winning the SB let the region know that optimism is OK some times, and those good vibes helped the Sox. I think the C's had more to do with KG, but I also think that they benefited from the 5 championships of their neighbors preceeding them in the decade.

That whole playoff run was magical but without the kick nothing else happens. It all starts there.
