Dropped passes aren't an official stat, but Elias Sports Bureau tracks them. Elias uses a common-sense analysis of "should the receiver have caught the ball." If there's any doubt among Elias analysts, the player isn't charged with a drop.

Randy Moss led the Patriots with the most drops (7) last season.

Wes had 111 opportunities-Amazing! And of those 111 he dropped only FIVE. Given the timing of TFB's injury I'd guess 98% of that 111 were thrown by Matt. Wes is such an extraordinary player-heart and soul. Kevin 2 out of 58,again doing it sans TFB.

Nice catch Mo. Very telling stats indeed.

I'm not too fond of missed tackles resulting in the other team scoring a TD, blown coverages resulting in quick TDs, other teams returning kicks for TDs, our going 3-and-out series after series while our D gets winded, shanked punts on our part, long Patriots gains negated by penalties, when we have a third and goal on the one that becomes third and goal on the 16 due to penalites, cheap PI calls that give the other team the ball first and goal on the one, and stuff like that.

And dropped passes.

No, he had 111 Receptions and 5 drops.

No way to tell how many opportunities because Graham only listed passes caught and passes dropped. There could be any number of passes thrown Welker's way that were not caught but were not considered drops.

So the percentage of drops vs opportunities is actually even lower for Welker (and every other receiver).

A potential game winning dropped TD pass is just as bad if not worse than all of the above.

Also I was talking from an offensive standpoint, all of the above relate to defense, special teams or officiating beyond our control. Excluding going 3 and out, which dropped passes can help contribute to.

First off, let's face it citing Moss for a dropped pass in the same category as a normal human is not fair....

Unless you have a category of how many passe were caught falling down, with one fingernail, with his toes while being hit by two people, one handed, while leaping 4 feet in the air, etc.

Second thing, when I saw dropped passes and Graham in the first sentence, I thought they were naming an award for dropped passes after our old tight end.

LOL I know-he's a faahreek and we love it:rocker: Last season's stats are interesting though but they don't take into account double coverage etc. Yet Wes was haunted out there too; Gaff and Ben probably got the least attention out there yet their stats are among the worst cited.

Coverage is one of the reasons I'm glad we got Lewis, SOMEBODY'S going to end up with less pressure than our usual suspects seem to get. I hope Kevin continues to slip under everyone's radar too, he's reliable just like Wes.

Moss' drops last year were So disappointing. ALL drops are of course but those by The Freak seemed to be more so

Moss may have a higher percentage of drops than Welker, but most of Moss' patterns take him a lot deeper, where wind can play with the ball, where it can get lost in the sky, where any number of things can go wrong.

Welker catches most of his passes in the 5-10 yard range (roughly). I would fully expect him to catch a much higher percentage of those as they're straight line, below the wind, and usually follow a quick move where the defender isn't in position to affect the receiver's concentration.

Don't get hung up one way or the other "best player" etc. Welker is better than anyone else on our team at being a slot receiver. That includes Moss. If the roles were reversed and Moss was playing underneath all day, and Welker had to go deep, neither would be as successful and the team would suffer.
