Steelers sign James Harrison to long term deal

That's just simply ridiculous. Harrison is an excellent linebacker but that kind of deal is simply too much. And I do agree with your stance on Wilfork. We are going to have to pony up some serious cash in order to keep him. How that, and our other FA situations pan out, should make next offseason pretty interesting. I don't want to speak for anybody else, but in BB I trust.

If you look in comparison to the Haynesworth contract it is no where near these two numbers:)

From NFP:

The National Football Post | Harrison Lands Monster Deal

6 years, $51+M. For a LB to get that kind of contract, even one as successful as Harrison, suggests that Wilfork will be looking at upwards of 6 years/$60M.

Like I've been saying, the longer this goes on, the more expensive it'll be. Stroud extended at 8-9 mill / per, now Harrison signs for almost 9 per. I think we could've had Vince at about 8 per, that's very comparable to Jenkins, Rodgers, Stroud, and others at the DT position. With the NT/DT cap hit being at about 7 mill per next yr, I still think he wants to be payed fair, a k a more than his competition. I don't see him demanding more than 8.5-9 mill, but they'd better hurry up. I think he's fair, but not being greedy. However, that'll change if more players keep breaking the bank. Like I said, my guess is a little lower than yours, I say 8.5-9 mill, but we're close.

Yeah, that really adjusts market value which could make things tricky.

That's also for LB's though, the cap hit for NT/DT is approx. 7 mill. Look at the players comparable at Vince's position: Jenkins, Stroud, Rodgers, Hampton, etc. That's what it should be based on, somewhere between 8.5-9 million, that would make him the highest paid out of those guys. LB's like Suggs, Dansby, etc are tending to make about 9 mill now, for the elite.

It certainly doesn't help us though, I wish they'd hurry

Actually it is getting there if you look at the real contract (approx.12-13 per, over 4 yrs)

The rest is BS, that's already been determined. Big Sey's gonna want somewhere between 11-12 too, I'm sure

But yeah, Harrison's 8.5 and Mayoclinic's guess of 10 mill for Vince isn't anywhere as bad as Haynesworth, the redskin's are dumb!

There is no evidence that Wilfork would have extended for less than Harrison. And presuming that we could have gotten Wilfork for a cap hit of $7M, where do you think we would get additional $5M (say an $18M bonus over 6 years and a 2009 raise of $2M)? We don't have enough to sign our rookies and meet the season's needs without a couple of restructures, even before such an extension.

This may impact other defensive players like Wilfork in the future, but I'd bet that Wilfork's agent will hold up the Haynesworth deal, not this one.

This will, however, set context for the Peppers deal, given his "I wanna be a 3-4 OLB" stand. And this is WAY less, on average, than the franchise tender Peppers is sitting on.

One thing that we should realize is that these two player were named in the DPOY talks with Harrison winning it last year. Wilfork is not there yet, while his importance is huge on our defense him or Seymour cannot boast a DPOY honors.

Oh, you don't think 8.5 is fair, or approx. what he'd ask?

Since it'd be the same as DPY Harrison, and more than key DT/NT's such as Stroud, Hampton, S.Rodgers, and Kris Jenkins, when the cap hit isn't even 7 million--why not? I thought 8.5-9 million was just about right on, especially when a lot just last wk were saying 5-6 mill (way too low)

Where could we get the money?

I remember about a month ago, we had approx. 16-17 million before signing some free agents. That is my whole argument--that the longer we are waiting the more it is going to cost us, as other players continue to drive up the market value. Where could we get it now? A couple/few restructures, an extension or 2,maybe a cut we don't want, and the money that's left over. (though it'd be hard now, with the draft etc--then again, we shouldn't have waited til now)

So you think by waiting longer, we'll get him signed for less money then? I don't really understand that thinking, or why a 5 yr/45 million contract wouldn't be way sufficient. Or maybe, at worst the 6-60 that Mayoclinic suggested, but then he'd be going back on his word that he 'wanted something reasonable to stay, but fair'

he got 20 mill up front. The guy is 31 when the season starts. The deal probably goes like this 3, 3, 3, 5, 8 and 8 . The steelers keep him locked up till for 4 years and them cut him making the deal 4 years and 34 mill or 8.5 a year

I would be pleased as punch to sign Wilfork at that amount.

This years cap has nothing to do with it. They could just extend the current
contract and give him the bonus now.

Let's kill this meme now before it takes root.

Remember that only the top 51 salaries count against the salary cap, and even then, you're going to knock a salary off the cap for every one you add. From a practical standpoint, that means that any player the Pats draft after the 3rd round will only have his signing bonus count against the cap, and any player in the first three rounds already has about $500K of his cap hit in the cap already.

Even better, I don't see it being too possible right now, but that wasn't my argument. It was that we should've maybe done it already, and that waiting longer is only gonna continue to drive the price up higher. If you see it being possible, then let's get on that horse and ride it :D
