4/6 Pat Kirwan 2 rounder

New 2 round mock just out from Pat Kiran at nfl.com. It's using that confusing format where the 2nd round picks are listed under the team rather than in sequential order:

Mock draft 5.0: New No. 1 overall pick, but it's still not Stafford

For the Pats he has:

23. Clay Mathews, LB
34. Connor Barwin, OLB
47. Donald Brown, RB
58. Paul Kruger, DE

He still has Chicago picking at #18, which is ludicrous this far out from the Cutler trade, so it seems rather sloppy to me.

3 LB prospects in the top 4 seems silly for the Pats. I actually like the combination of Matthews and Barwin. Barwin is my binky, 'nuff said there. Matthews looked really fluid at his pro day and you could see he safety background in the way he moved. I still think he might move inside to SILB - he's not the typical thumper type and he needs to work on taking on lineman, but Guyton wasn't a prototypical SILB either. However, with both Louis Delmas (going #36 to Cleveland) and William Beatty (going #40 to the Raiders) available I probably would have preferred Barwin at 23 and one of those guys at 34, or to trade up.

I think Donald Brown's a great back - he reminds me a bit of D'Angelo Williams in 2006, whom I wanted over Maroney; I like the way he runs low to the ground in traffic, and the way he catches out of the backfield - but with Jarron Gilbert going #48 to Denver it is hard to pass him up. And I don't see Kruger at 58 at all. Not with William Moore still on the board at safety.

I'd be quite happy with Matthews, Barwin, Donald Brown and Will Moore on the first day. I'd probably prefer Barwin, Beatty, Gilbert and Moore even more, but I'm not at all unhappy with the Matthews and Brown picks.

It makes sense if one plays inside at SILB - no different than all the scenarios with Maualuga and Barwin at 23 and 34 in some order. I actually like Matthews better in the long run than Maualuga at SILB for the Pats - he has the smarts, the pass coverage ability, the athleticism, and the motor. My biggest question is his ability to take on blockers.

Again, I prefer other options (like Barwin and Beatty, or Barwin and Delmas) but it's not a particularly bad scenario. I've seen worse.

Kirwin, remember, actually talks to Belichick occasionally. This seems like a very realistic scenario to me, although I don't really get the Donald Brown pick.

All of the linebackers fit the Patriot mold, especially in the versatility department. They're all big and fast. Kruger looks like a classic Pats OLB, but he's also played inside. Barwin and Kruger are both big enough to set the edge and they both have good pass rushing skills -- these are the types of players the Pats have a hard time finding since most college OLBs are too small for the 3-4, while most DEs can't cover. Matthews is exactly the guy you'd want to play SILB next to Mayo -- he's tall enough and fast enough to cover tight ends. Plus he could play outside in a pinch.

I'd love this draft, personally.

I agree I have no problem with BB using him as SILB the question is as you stated how well he can take on and shed blockers.

Kruger sounds redundant. Two prime LBs, one ILB and one OLB, fills out the LB corps, for a generation.

Strong work. I didn't check his last one for comparison - my bad. I wouldn't have bothered to post a new thread if I'd realized it - just updated the thread on the old draft. Walterfootball also came out with a new 4 rounder today and I almost posted it, until I saw that their Pats picks were identical to what they had 4 days ago.

I have Barwin, Gilbert, Sintim, and Meredith going to the Pats in my mock. I don't think Kruger is big enough to be a Pats DE, so he'd be an OLB conversion. It's a bit much to take 3 linebackers imo.

I'm thinking we might realistically take two LB in this year's draft. For example I can see us passing on Sintim to take a better safety in round 2 then taking a flyer on a Jason Williams in round 3. Can you imagine how ridiculously athletic our D would be after adding Barwin, Gilbert, and Williams?

I'd still trade 1 and 2b to get Maualuga then get an OLB at 2a, whether it's Barwin, English, whoever, then look to a Safety at 2c.

Matthews is a done nothing; living on ther national story of his dad and uncle.

I don't draft guys who only started for the first time on their 4th game of their senior year. Talk about a half year wonder with no production history. Only might be someday drreams and projections.

It's a confusing format. If you read what is posted for each team, it lists the second round picks for that team. So if you look under the Pats at #23 where it lists Matthews and read what's written, what you see is:

If the Patriots trade for Julius Peppers or sign Jason Taylor, then this pick is either gone or changes. For now, the rising star from USC is the perfect fit for Bill Belichick's defense. They come right back in the second round with another outside linebacker -- one who reminds me of Mike Vrabel.
Second round: No. 34, Connor Barwin, OLB/DE/TE, Cincinnati; No. 47, Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut; No. 58, Paul Kruger, DE, Utah

I don't like the format at all, both because it's easy to miss the 2nd round picks and because you can't look at it and easily see who went from 33-64 and in what exact order.
