Round One

23. New England Patriots - DE Connor Barwin - Cincinnati

Barwin has been working out like a beast (4.49 @ pro day), he might not make to round 2.
Round Two

34. New England Patriots (via KC) - DT Ziggy Hood, Missouri

The Patriots have several defensive lineman up for contract, Hood provides leverage.
47. New England Patriots (via SD) - CB Asher Allen, Georgia

Allen is a speedster who can offer the Patriots an option in bump and run press coverage.
58. New England Patriots - DB Rashad Johnson - Alabama

Johnson has the leadership ability to help fill the void created when Harrison left NE.

It's a strange draft. Not just for the Pats.

Their first round is not unreasonable until the end. Louis Delmas going #21 seems a bit high but it could happen. Philip Loadholt is a reach. Alphonso Smith and especially DJ Moore look like they are 2nd round picks.

The second round is crazy. No William Moore or Patrick Chung? Hakeem Nicks falling to 45, William Beatty to 51, James Laurinaitis to 53 and Larry English to 63? I like Mike Wallace a lot and have suggested targeting him at #124 (or even 97), but going #57? These are big stretches.

For the Pats, Barwin at 23 is solid. A DE at 34 is also solid. They have Gilbert going #36 to Cleveland, so essentially they have the Pats choosing between Hood and Gilbert at #34. If we end up with that choice I would be quite happy. I personally see Gilbert of Hood for us, but if the FO prefers Hood I'm fine with it.

Asher Allen at 47 is crazy. We don't need a day 1 CB, and Allen's not a day 1 pick. And William Beatty is still available. At 58, Larry English would be an absolute steal, or one of the safeties (Moore or Chung). I think I would go after English and then try to trade up in the 3rd for Moore or Chung, even if we have to use a 2010 pick - say, #89 and a 2010 3rd round pick.

So I would ideally have:

21 - Connor Barwin, OLB
34 - Jarron Gilbert or Ziggy Hood, DE
47 - William Beatty, OT
58 - Larry English, DE/LB
early 3rd - William Moore or Patrick Chung, S

That would be a heck of a draft.

What do you know about Rashad Johnson out of Alabama? Would his Saban connection make him a more likely choice for the Patriots? I've sort of imagined that the choice was between Chung Moore and Delmas at some point in the 2nd round -- though since that seems to be the popular take, doesn't that mean there's no chance it actually happens? :D

He's a pure FS. On the smallish side - he weighed in at the combine at 5'11" 203# but that's on the heavy side for him, and he probably can't add any bulk. Not particularly physical or athletic, but great football smarts and terrific hand and ball skills. Probably a smarter but less athletic Reggie Nelson type. My big question is whether we would go with someone who is a pure FS - and personally, I'd take a shot at Sean Smith ahead of Johnson if we did go the FS route.

sean smith instead of ziggy
sintim instead of asher allen
jamon meredith instead of rashad johnson

wow that would be amazing if hood lasted till 34. i dont see it happening

sean smith instead of ziggy
sintim instead of asher allen
jamon meredith instead of rashad johnson

That is what I was going to say, but now I will just agree:)

asher allen ???? WTF????

Rashad Johnson is a top special teamer. You likely say he isn't "physical" because he doesn't weigh 220.

Smith will likely get picked 20 spots before Johnson so the choice will be unlikely to be between the two.

I didn't say he couldn't tackle. But he's not an intimidating physical player who hits hard like Louis Delmas or Patrick Chung. Delmas is around the same size and Chung is the same height but 8 lbs. heavier. I wasn't thinking of size when I used the word "physical". It's not a particularly strong characteristic of Johnson's game. But you're right, he was a strong special teamer.

Regarding Sean Smith, sure it's a choice. We have 4 picks between 23 and 58, so we can always choose to pick one guy earlier if we think it's worth it. If we really want a FS then I personally would pick Sean Smith at 34 or 47 (or possibly with a trade up to the late 30's/early 40's) than Rashad Johnson at 58, based on Smith greater size, speed, positional versatility and upside. And Smith is not particularly physical either. They both have great ball skills. Johnson has better smarts and intangibles. Not everyone would agree, obviously.

if the pats come through with a draft like this, personnel-wise, it puts them in a much better spot to work on extending seymour, wilfork, mankins since it goes a long way towards fixing things the pats may have had to spend $$ on in the future........barwin/mayo/sintim/thomas will work (with some kind of vet platooning with barwin and bruschi working with sintim)

if bodden pans out and the pats extend him, they'd be good with bodden/meriweather/smith/wheatley:wilhite

keeping mankins, drafting meredith and extending kaczur and moving him inside would set things up for awhile

I watched Tebow light up Allen like a pinball machine last year. But i also Allen have a decent game against SC. Hard to tell what kind of game he is going to bring week in and week out.

yeah I watch alot of SEC games and he has respectable speed and coverage but his ball skills are suspect. Either he will be a solid number two corner or a nickle option. IMO round two is too early.

Hood should be gone by 34. I would jump all over him at 34. I could see this flipped-Hood at 23 and Barwin 34. I am not sold on Barwin at 23. Not sure I would take him until 58. I am really struggling om Barwin. Cincinatti does not produce alot of round one guarantees. Especially at this pass rush position. Be careful not to overdraft here because he is a good guy-good athlete.

:#23 - C. Barwin
#34 - J. Gilbert/W. Beatty (Can't choose!!!)
#47 - W. Moore
#58 - E. Wood

I would be happy after Day 1 if this draft happened which would be a good draft already with 7 other picks to mess around with. It's good to be a pats fan :D

I watched every game of Asher Allen's career at Georgia, and he is not a 2nd (or maybe even a third) round pick.

If the board looks like that at #23, the pats are trading down.

I love how all of these mock guys have the Pats taking 2 CBs, they already have Hobbs, Springs, the ex-Cleveland/Detriot guy (sorry forget his name) plus last years picks Wheatley and Whilite (both of whom I thought were coming along untiol they got hurt. That's 5 CBs already.

Won't even address the first round because my mention of Barwin would lead to anarchy.

So in the second around....

Replace Ziggy with Moreno; Moreno is the more proven and arguably the better back in this draft. For him to be in the second round screams memories of Clinton Portis. Not a need by any stretch, but the Pats should be picking for value.

Sammie Hill or Terrance Knighton would fortify the Pat's defensive line against any uncertainty in 2010. Seymour has been on and off the field over the last couple years and losing him next year doesn't predict the end of the world. Wilfork has been a constant on the defensive line and would be more sorely missed.

On the topic of Wilfork, this mock would suggest that the Dolphins (Ron Brace/Fili Moala) and Packers (Raji) would have less interest in Wilfork in 2010. Jets have Jenkins and Browns have Rodgers. On top of that, next year will have two big nose tackles to the league via the draft.

Replace Allen with either Beatty, Britt or Nelson.

I'm sure Coach Belichick was looking for a Huskie earlier, in Butler, but he'll take Beatty as an insurance policy. I feel that Britt could offer the team a lot in short time and that Nelson replaces Watson in 2010. I'm good any three ways.

Keep Johnson or replace with Chung or Levitre.
