New 3 round mock from Chad Reuter at NFLdraftscout:

NFL Draft - CBSSports.com Football

For the Pats:

23. Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB
34. Eric Wood, OG/C
47. Alphonso Smith, CB
58. Pat White, QB/WR
89. David Bruton, FS
97. Daniel Ellerbe, ILB

I don't like this at all. I specifically don't think Maybin is strong enough to handle the edge, I don't like the Pat White pick at #58, I think 34 is too early to take an OG/C, I don't see us going CB on the first day, and I don't like the Bruton and Ellerbe picks in the 3rd. And in general, I think there are too many better fits and values that he passes over.

My picks:

23. Connor Barwin, OLB (going #41 to Green Bay; Reuter notes: "Barwin could be a first-round pick, but the Packers won't complain if the deep DE-OLB hybrid class allows someone to drop to this spot.")
34. Louis Delmas, S (going #36 to Cleveland; Reuter notes: "Delmas is an enforcer in the box and over the middle.")
47. Jarron Gilbert, DE (going #52 to the Jets; Reuter notes "Gilbert's athleticism gets him on the field right away and gives him great upside.")
58. Jamon Meredith, OT (going #71 to Oakland).
89. Jason Williams, ILB (going #90 to Atlanta).
97. Trevor Canfield or TJ Lang, OG (not going in the first 3 rounds).

2 words... Hate it!

BTW, Reuter's colleague Rob Rang has the Pats taking Barwin at #23 in his latest one round mock dated 4/3, also on NFLdraftscout.

We are drafting for 2010 not 2009..... Barwin would be the choice over Maybin. Much more upside.....

I'm really curious what we have in Crable. I never bought the "injury", more like shadow roster till this season.

For the record, here are the explanations:

23. Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State: Maybin's raw talent should allow him to contribute as a pass rusher this season, with the potential to become even more in the future.

34. Eric Wood, C, Louisville: Patriots' coaches attended Wood's pro day, and they're always looking for depth in the interior offensive line.

47. Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest: Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs help bring veteran presence, but Moore's skills add depth this year and potentially much more in the future.

58. Patrick White, QB, West Virginia: The Patriots have six of the top 99 picks, so they can take a chance on a wild card like White.

89. David Bruton, FS, Notre Dame: Athletic safety who should be solid in the secondary and very good on special teams.

97. Dannell Ellerbe, ILB, Georgia: The Patriots are always looking for depth on the offensive line.

I like it even less than the 4/3 version. For the Pats:

23. Brian Cushing, LB
34. Alphonso Smith, CB
47. LeSean McCoy, RB
58. Pat White, QB/WR
89. Chase Coffman, TE
97. David Bruton, FS

I would cry if we ended up with that draft - and not tears of joy. Some of his picks:

15. Malcolm Jenkins, CB
25. Clay Matthews LB
26. Rey Maualuga, ILB
28. Donald Butler, RB
30. Darius Butler, CB
31. Larry English, DE/OLB
33. Ziggy Hood, DT
37. Connor Barwin, DE/OLB
39. Hakeem Nicks, WR
40. Louis Delmas, S
41. William Beatty, OT
44. Percy Harvin, WR
49. Sean Smith, CB/S
50. William Moore, S
51. Patrick Chung, S
52. Jarron Gilbert, DE/T
71. Jamon Meredith, OT
77. Jason Williams, LB
79. Clint Sintim, LB
87. Chip Vaughn, SS
93. TJ Lang, OT/G
94. Dorell Scott, DT
98. Sen'Derrick Marks, DT

I can understand the first 2 picks (even though I don't like them), but taking LeSean McCoy at 47 over the 3 remaining safeties and Jarren Gilbert?

Reuter's mock is worse than Rang's mock... One has to wonder about these guys and whether they really are thinking...

Fun part is I'd be happy with the players except Ellerbe if they came in a different order. If we traded #23 into next year, and went:

#34 Smith
#47 Maybin
#58 Wood
#89 White
#97 Bruton

I would be happy with the draft.

They are thinking stuff like this:

58. Patrick White, QB, West Virginia: The Patriots have six of the top 99 picks, so they can take a chance on a wild card like White.

"Well, I think Pat White is a bottom of the 2nd-round guy. Who's there that might have picks to blow on a "wildcard"? The Pats? Alright, I'll pencil him in, that works out great for the crossword, ****, I mean mock draft."

I really like the potential of this mock draft.

Cushings is a younger Vrabel, versatile can play inside or outside. I hope he can stay healthty, but I doubt it.

Smith - best ball skills in this draft bar none and a willing tackler. Needs to quit running his mouth so much on the field, but BB can cure that real fast.

McCoy - great vision and extremely productive. I wonder if these writers who doubt he is a solid citizen are speculating or if there is more to the story.

Coffman - best hands in the entire draft, knows how to get open. Weak blocker and slow. I thought he could run a 4.65, but most sites list him in the 4.8 range. Ugly!

Bruton - experience, leadership, Weiss connection. Played his best when ND's defense was toast in 2007. Great change of direction, made some bif plays for ND.
