I wanted to try something different. I took need completely out of the equation and picked who I thought was the best player available at each selection the Patriots have. If ended up selecting 6 CB's or 8 OL's then that's what it would be. I used this NFL Draft Scout list for the rankings:

NFL Draft - 2009 Draft Prospects - CBSSports.com Football

I am interested in seeing who other people come up with if they choose to do this exercise. Here is what I came up with:

23:Eben Britton OT Arizona
34: Aaron Maybin OLB Penn State
47: Louis Delmas, S Western Michigan
58: Jarron Gilbert DE San Jose State
89: Gerald Cadogan OT Penn State
97: Cornelius Ingram TE Florida
124: Jasper Brinkley ILB South Carolina
170: Chris Clemons S Clemson
199: Henry Melton DE/OLB Texas
207: Hunter Cantwell QB Louisville
234: Jamarko Smmons WR Western Michigan

Ineresting list. Not sure how you come up with "best player" - currently or projected potential? Aaron Maybin does not seem NFL ready, but if you project him out a year or two it is different.

My day 1 list:

23. Darius Butler (current) or Connor Barwin (projected)
34. Hakeem Nicks (current) or William Beatty (projected)
47. Louis Delmas (current) or Sean Smith (projected)
58. Jarron Gilbert

Good calls .. if it went down like that id be more than happy

If you are using their prospect list and rankings then

23:Brandon Pettigrew TE
34:Alex Mack C
47:Lewis Delmas FS
58:Herman Johnson OG
89:Chip Vaughn SS
97:Louie Sakoda K
124:Tony Fiametta FB

These players would be the best available by their positional rankings.

BAP (for Patriots) on this ranking:

23 Eben Britton OT Arizona
34 Larry English LB N. Illinois
47 Patrick Chung SS Oregon
(Delmas is temtping but Chung seems smarter with higher floor)
58 Joaquin Iglesias WR Oklahoma
89 Andre Levitre OG Oregon St.
97 Steven McGee QB Texas A&M

Nice haul, but I'd trade out of 58 in this scenario.

I would be happy with this:
#23) Knowshon Moreno-RB UGA
#34) Larry English-DE/OLB NIU
#47) Patrick Chung-SS Oregon
#58) Jaron Gilbert-DE San Jose state

I could exchange Gilbert with a Guard or a Tackle.

Right now I am leaning toward....

1.) - Butler CB - Superior change of direction. Extremely confident and shows ball skills.
2A.) Trade for a 2010 1st rounder.
2B.) - Barwin OLB - Very raw. Will contribute on ST while spending a year or two to develop.
2C.) - Kruger ILB - Two down run defender. Always around the ball. Rotates with Guyton.
3A.) - Byrd FS - Very physical. Best run defender in this class.
3B.) - Lang OG - Moved from OT. Very nasty and can road grade/drive block.
4.) - Eglisias WR - Has experience running option routes. Knows how to seperate.

Curiously, I think that is better than many mocks I've seen.

This was an exercise Doc did just to see how it would come out if he took BPA regardless of who it was. ;)

I realized that today. It was late for me as I was on the west coast...

Sorry about that Doc.
