2) We will see if Jackson and Hood are available at 23. I think that the issue is Belichick's evaluation of the three (including Gilbert). Perhaps he agrees with your evaluation, perhaps with mine. In any case, if all three are acceptable, then I expect to see us drafting a DE at 23.

So, IMO, they won't end up drafting one. None are really worth 23 let alone trading up. As worthwile "developmetal" talent is available later in the draft. It would be a collosal waste of resources, in my opinion.

I would rather see Pat White drafted at 23 then any of the four you mentioned.

I agree with this and might take it a little further. I think they will feel out the Seymour and Wilfork situation and might make a move in next years draft for a guy like Carlos Dunlap (who I think would be perfect for our 3-4) or big DT's like Ndamukong Suh or Cody. I think our pressing need right now for 2009 is OLB and S then for 2010 I think OL and DL would be the pressing need. We already have a pretty good team with the draft providing great depth and competition and if we are lucky a potential starter. I personally like Gilbert if he slipped to 47 or Brace if he was around at 58. I think Ziggy Hood would be good but at DE BB like more height like Dunlap would bring next year

How did Wilfork fall to us at 24 (I believe it was 24)? I know he fell, but to fall that much, was there any legitimate reason?

If the pats like Raji, and he's there around 12, I could see them trading up to get him.

I still think BB has later round options at DE in this draft, but the 2010 draft has a couple of monster DL guys that could be #1 picks. Would they last until #32? Not sure about that.

I totally agree on Green.

What about looking at the DT side of things and if we draft a guy like Terrance Taylor, Michigan who was once though of as a first round guy but to say the least he can be had in the 5th round kinda the poor mans Raja??

I'd say the exact opposite - my guess is a DL will be taken on the first day. Too many high round picks to pass on all the beef that is pretty much gone by day two. Smith is far from enough of a player to prevent the Pats from bringing in more youth and competition to a front three that has become a bit lackluster.

I can't see passing on a top DE (and giving him a year to develop) just because a monster defensive end MIGHT drop to us in next year's draft so that Belichick can start a rookie.

Love the way you think Ochmed. I'm on board for DL early this year, it makes too much sense to give a prospect some time to learn the system, a very important position on a BB defense. I don't see Seymour being re-signed next year and we can't rely on studs falling in the draft next year to us, nor backups stepping in that have currently not shown the ability.

I think Wright is OK at end, but just as a rotational guy. Smith looked OK too.

In BB I trust.

Jackson will probably be long gone by 23. Hood doesn't seem to be a fit for 3-4.

Gilbert is a very interesting case though. On the one hand, 23 might be a little high for him. On the other hand, if we don't grab him at 23, it's possible he'll end up with one of our AFC rivals - Steelers, Colts, Dolphins. So I'd have to consider it very seriously. Gilbert should be an upgrade over Jarvis right away on 3rd downs and will be good insurance for Seymour in 2010.

If we go this route, I'd have to think Jarvis is fighting for his life in TC.

I seriously doubt Seymour is resigned after this season.

I think Gilbert would be the way to go in the first round, even if they trade down a few spots before taking him. Or even better...if they think he'll make it to #34 its a no brainer. This would free up a lot of cap space by allowing them to cut Jarvis Green, and give them a very capable replacement for Seymour in 2010.

Gilbert and Barwin (or vice versa) with the first 2 picks would be a great start to this draft.....

NFL Draft Bible Q&A on location from the San Jose St. Pro Day with Jarron Gilbert.

Jarron Gilbert (along with Christopher Owens & Coye Francies) speak with Player Spotlight host Andrew Garda after a stellar Pro Day at San Jose St. on March 20th.

I’m here with Jarron Gilbert, who just had a pretty good Pro Day. Today you spent a lot of time with Rex Ryan–how did that go?

Gilbert: Oh, it went good. We just went through some drills–I think I did pretty good with him, picking things up. Just had a pretty good day out here.

You were the 2008 WAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. That speaks to a great deal of consistency as well as production. What goes into your day to day workout routine that allows you to reach such a high-level of play?

Gilbert: Well, during the season I watched a whole lot of film and studied my opponents to a tee. I knew everything about them going into the week, so that really helped me during the season. And I had a lot of free time during the semester, I only took one unit during the semester and that was archery. I had already graduated so it gave me a lot of time to really study my opponent and a lot of confidence going into the game. So, it helped me out there on the field.

So film study…A lot of guys–the gym, the field–that’s their biggest focus, but it sounds like film study to you is as important as anything else in the game.

Gilbert: Yeah, film study and staying strong during the week, staying healthy. Getting in the training room and getting in the weight room and getting my body back to its peak for Saturday. That was the biggest thing for me.

What do you do that gives you that edge so you can get into the backfield and disrupt a play before it even really takes off?

Gilbert: I’m just quick off the ball. Quick with a good first step, and I get strong at the point of attack which allows me to get a lot of penetration. I came into the season pretty much a three year starter at end and moved inside, so coming inside I felt more athletic and quicker dealing with the guards then they’re used to. So being able to get off with speed really helped me out.

I am positive that the Pats will draft a DL in the first 3 picks they hold/trade up/down for. In addition to the guys that have been discussed, what about Brace?

The first 3 picks I believe will be DL, OLB, OT

followed by: OG, S, CB (our roster is less stable here then most think)

then: WR, RB

I wouldn't be shocked if we try to trade 47 for a 1st rounder next year. If the team does poorly a la SF, we could end up with a high pick. Or, more ammunition to trade up if said team has a decent season.

Gilbert at 34 at the earliest but that means you have to take Barwin at 23. Then Safety or OL 47/58 range. If we get a safety later, Chip Vaughn might be a good choice. Great size/speed combo. Assuming of course that Moore, Chung, Delmas are gone by then.
