Assume the following pre-draft trades:

1. Denver trades #12 and Jay Cutler to Cleveland for Brady Quinn, #5, #36 and a 2010 1st round pick. Quinn is valued at the 36 pick. Cutler is valued as a 2010 1st rounder and an exchange of 2009 1st round picks. McDaniels gets his 2nd choice for QB (after Matt Cassel) in Quinn. He had hoped to get more for Cutler but wants him gone badly, and needs a QB in the package.
2. Cleveland trades #50 and Derek Anderson to the NY Jets for #17 (550 points, or equivalent in value to their #36 pick, so they get equal value for Quinn and Anderson). The Jets get a big strong-armed QB in the Flacco mold, who Ryan knows from Baltimore.

Round 1:

1. Detroit: Matt Stafford, QB. Stafford reportedly blew Detroit away today.
2. St. Louis: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor. St. Louis goes for the replacement for Orlando Pace to anchor their line.
3. Cleveland: Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest. Pioli gets the cornerstone for his defense.
4. Seattle: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC. Seattle goes for Hasselbeck's replacement over Walter Jones' replacement. Sanchez is their guy for their version of the WCO.
5. Denver: BJ Raji, DT, Boston College. Denver gets the DT to anchor their 3-4 defense.
6. Cincinnati: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia. Bengals can't pass one of the top 2 tackles left.
7. Oakland: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech. Al Davis can't resist getting the "next Fred Belitnikoff". A steal at #7.
8. Jacksonville: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri. Jags get a blazing WR to open up their offense. Michael Oher could be the choice here as well.
9. Green Bay: Brian Orapko, DE/OLB, Texas. Pack gets a talented pass-rusher to put opposite Aaron Kampman in their 3-4.
10. San Francisco: Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB, Penn St. Maybin is rising fast, and with the QB's gone SF goes for a pass rusher at OLB. Andre Smith and Rey Maualuga would also be options.
11. Buffalo: Everett Brown, DE/OLB, Florida St. Buffalo gets the pass rusher they crave. Robert Ayers is also an option.
12. Cleveland: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio St. Browns get Cutler and then add a big, talented CB, who should be an upgrade over the 2007 version of Leigh Bodden. Beanie Wells could also be the pick here.
13. Washington: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama. Washington jumps at the chance to get the talented Smith to anchor the right side of their line.
** Trade: New Orleans trades #14 to Detroit for #20 and #65. Saints are desperate to move back into the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
14. Detroit: Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi. Detroit gets their LT to protect Stafford. Oher and Cherilous will make nice bookends at tackle.
15. Houston: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC. Houston gets a versatile LB who can play inside or out. Knowshon Moreno and Clay Matthews would also get some consideration.
16. San Diego: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU. Chargers gets\ the top 3-4 DE to the gap left by Igor Olshansky. Rey Maualuga and Knowshon Moreno are also options.
17. Cleveland: Clay Matthews, LB, USC. Mangina gets a 3-4 OLB. Matthews had a great pro day. Connor Barwin and Rey Maualuga are also options here.
18. Chicago: Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland. Big, fast threat to open up the passing game.
19. Tampa Bay: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas. Bucs get a strong armed QB whom they covet.
20. New Orleans: Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio St. Saints trade back and still get their version of Thunder to go with Reggie Bush's Lightning.
21. Philadelphia: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma St. They wanted Beanie Wells, but settle for a versatile TE. Eben Britton is also an option here.
22. Minnesota: Eben Britton, OT, Arizona. Vikes get a nice RT to go opposite Bryant McKenzie.
** Trade: New England trades #23 and 58 to the NY Giants for #29 and 45.
23. NY Giants: Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina. With 3 WRs already gone and hearing that Parcells loves Nicks, the Giants trade up for the big WR they need to replace Plaxico Burress.
24. Atlanta: Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi. Atlanta gets a penetrating DT for their defense.
25. Miami: Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut. With Nicks gone, Miami goes for a fluid, athletic CB. Connor Barwin is an option here.
26. Baltimore: Rey Maualuga, ILB. Baltimore gets a physical ILB to replace Bart Scott and learn under Ray Lewis. Vontae Davis will also get serious consideration here.
27. Indianapolis: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida. Imagine what Peyton Manning can do with Harvin in addition to his other weapons, at both WR and out of the backfield. Nicks is also an option.
28. Philadelphia: Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee. Philly loves disruptive defensive lineman, and Ayers will be a good one.
29. New England: Connor Barwin, OLB, Cincinnati. The Pats don't wait until #34 to get their 3-4 OLB. William Beatty is also a possibility.
30. Tennessee: Jarron Gilbert, DT, San Jose St. Titans get a talented big man in the middle who may someday fill the gap left by Haynesworth.
31. Arizona: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia. The Cardinals get their choice to replace the Edge. Moreno slips a bit because of his 40 time, and is a steal here - another Emmit Smith.
32. Pittsburgh: Alex Mack, OG/C, California. Steelers get a powerful, smart anchor for it's biggest area of need.

Round 2:

33. Detroit: James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio St. With QB and OT filled, Detroit goes defense. Laurinaitis will fit in nicely with Julian Peterson and Ernie Sims. Vontae Davis could be the pick here as well.
34. New England: William Beatty, OT, Connecticut. Pats get a potential franchise OT to protect Brady.
35. St. Louis: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois. Detroit takes Laurinaitis, so St. Louis takes Davis. If Detroit takes Davis, St. Louis takes Laurinaitis. Win-win.
36. Denver: Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia. Broncs add a nice 3-4 OLB complement to Jarvis Moss. Larry English and Alphonso Smith are also options here.
** Trade: Seattle trades #37 to New England for #47 and #89.
37. New England: Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan. Pats trade up get their version of Troy Polamalu.
38. Cincinnati: Max Unger, OG/C, Oregon. Bengals get a versatile interior lineman to block for Beanie Wells and Carson Palmer. Eric Wood from nearby Louisville is also an option.
39. Jamon Meredith, OT, South Carolina. Jags get their OT here.
40. Oakland: Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech. Al Davis gets a physical freak on the DL.
41. Green Bay: Ron Brace, DT, Boston College. Green Bay misses on Raji but gets his teammate to be their 3-4 DT anchor.
** Trade: Buffalo trades #42 to Indianapolis for #61, 92 and 127.
42. Indianapolis: Evander "Ziggy" Hood, DT, Missouri. As in 2007, Indy moves up to cover a need when a player they covet is still available.
43. San Francisco: Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest. 9ers wanted Brace but settle for a ball-hawking CB. Kenny Britt and Philip Loadholt are options here.
44. Miami: Larry English, DE/OLB. Phins jump at getting Butler and English with their first 2 picks. This is for Bakes781.
** Trade: New England trades #45 and a conditional 2010 pick to New Orleans for the Saints 2010 1st round pick. Donald Brown and Eric Wood are still on the board, but Pats can't pass up chance to get a 2010 1st rounder.
45. New Orleans: William Moore, S, Missouri. Saints trade up and get their pick of the remaining 3 top safeties.
46. Houston: Sean Smith, CB/S, Utah. Another safety fills a big need.
47. Seattle: Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut. The Hawks trade back but still get their replacement for Shawn Alexander to go with their new QB.
48. Denver: Patrick Chung, S, Oregon. Chung will make a nice replacement for John Lynch, to go with Brian Dawkins.
49. Chicago: Philip Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma. Big road-grader at RT to complement Chris Williams. DJ Moore could also be an option here.
50. NY Jets: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers. Jets get a big WR to complement their strong-armed QB.
51. Dallas: Duke Robinson, OG, Oklahoma. Wide-body OG to eventually replace Larry Allen.
52. Green Bay: Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa. Packers get a big, bruising runner.
53. Philadelphia: LeSean McCoy, RB, Pittsburgh. "Shady" falls a bit, and will share time with Westbrook.
54. Minnesota: DJ Moore, CB, Vanderbilt. Moore drops a bit, but is good value here. If Chicago goes with Moore, then the Vikings take Loadholt here to complement Bryant McKenzie.
** Trade: Atlanta trades #55 and #125 to Arizona for #63 and #95. With several talented TE's still available, Atlanta trades back.
55. Arizona: Eric Wood, C, Louisville. Arizona fills their other big need on offense with a smart 4 year starter at center. They don't think he'll last to 63, and they're right.
56. Miami: Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio St. Miami gets CB, OLB and WR with their first 3 picks. Perfect draft.
57. Baltimore: Coye Francies, CB, San Jose St. The Ravens love big CBs.
58. NY Giants: James Casey, TE, Rice. Giants get a smart, versatile athletic player who can help make up for the loss of Jeremy Shockey.
59. Carolina: Sen'Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn. Carolina gets an athletic, penetrating DT.
60. NY Giants: Marcus Freeman, OLB, Ohio St. LB is the Giant's biggest need left.
61. Buffalo: Jared Cook, TE, South Carolina. Buffalo trades down and still gets a the most athletic TE in the draft.
62. Tennessee: Pat White, QB/WR, West Virginia. Tennessee takes the versatile White as a WR, though they're happy to look at him as a QB option too.
63. Atlanta: Shawn Nelson , TE, Southern Mississippi. Atlanta trades back and still gets an athletic TE for Ryan.
64. Pittsburgh: Fili Moala, DE/DT, USC. Big athletic 3-4 DE.

Musical QBs:

- Cleveland gets Cutler and still manages to get 1st round picks.
- Denver subtracts Cutler but gets Quinn, Raji, Sintim and Chung.
- Jets get Anderson who fits their mold, and a 1st round caliber WR in Britt.
- Detroit gets Stafford, Oher and Laurinaitis.
- Seattle gets Sanchez for their WCO.
- Tampa Bay gets Freeman.

Thoughts?

Very hard work. Thank you. I have my work cut out for me to put something out like that. I would take that scenario but I have my preferences. The only caveat is Stafford. The Lions I thing take an OT at #1 and perhaps Freeman at #20 (or #14 in your scenario). Harrington is a ghost.

My thought is this why is Cleveland picking at nmumber 3 and Number 12 i am sure it was jsut a thought error but you may want to fix it before everyone else busts your chops for it. I would love for hte Pats to get a 2010 1st rounder but i think that might be a little late for a team to do it if it was at 34 i think that would be more realistic. But also fantastic work and i know whard these can be

Thanks for pointing out the error. That's obviously KC picking Curry at #3.

I'm not convinced 45 is too late, especially this year when the values at 45 may be near the values in the 20's. SF traded #42 to Indy for a 2008 1st in the 2007 draft, which was much weaker. So it's been done. At #34 I think we get a clear 1st round value in a pretty strong draft, so to trade that we would have to be trading with a team which we think has a good chance of being in the top 15 in 2010.

This is for Bakes781.

:D so I guess I better start eating my tuna now huh? :p

I kinda wished you had spaced it out a little as it's hard to read lol but I like it! I still contend that Al Davis won't take Crabtree because of what Mike Lombardi(former employee of Al's) said, that he won't take a guy w/o knowing how fast he is. I think if Cleveland gets involved in this Cutler deal it will be in a 3-way IMO. I don't see Mangini doing any favors for his old team in NY.

My 3-way trade scenario would be:

Det gets: Jay Cutler

Clev gets: Det's 20th pick

Den gets: Brady Quinn(worked with Weis), Det's 33rd and Clev's 36th

This way if you're Mangini you know Detroit's taking an OT and that leaves Sanchez/Stafford as an optiion at #5.

Just me Mayo but I wouldnt trade up to get Delmas .. I would rather take Moore and then Brinkley at 89. He's not the strong SS type I would want and I think Moore played injured most of his senior year and may be more ready

I love Delmas, as I've made clear. But if I were 100% convinced that William Moore's 2008 performance was due to injury and misuse by the Mizzou staff, and that his 2007 form is more likely to be his true level, then I take Moore hands down. I'm just not quite as certain as you seem to be.

Fun read. Thanks! I NE ends up drafting a pass-rushing outside LB(Barwin), a possible stud OT(Beatty), and another promising safety(Delmas), and picks up another 1st round pick for 2010. I'd consider that a pretty good first day.

Understood but I think we can get a good ILB at #89 like Brinkley, Beckwith, McKilop etc and i'm not sure Delmas > Moore/Johnson + Brinkley/Beckwith

Trading a second rounder for a #1 next year is very Patriot-like. I don't think they'll have to throw in a conditional pick to do it.

My 3-way trade scenario would be:

Det gets: Jay Cutler

Clev gets: Det's 20th pick

Den gets: Brady Quinn(worked with Weis), Det's 33rd and Clev's 36th

Trading Brady Quinn to move up from 36 to 20 seems a steep price.

Great effort here Mayo.
My gut is that we don't see 2 QB's taken in the top 5 picks... there has to be someone left to languish away in the green room, right?

I understand that Seattle would be thinking a few years down the road on picking up their next QB, but why is this the year to draft him? Seems like a lot of $ to pay a guy to sit and wait for more than one season to get off the bench. If I were a Seattle fan, I think I'd rather get the best player available at the slot and then try to get a developmental QB in the later rounds--or is it already "too late" to do that? I don't see the hurry to end the Hasselbeck era.

So with Cutler now history in Denver and gone to Chicago, here's another take on my 2 rounder:

Round 1:

1. Detroit: Matt Stafford, QB. Stafford reportedly blew Detroit away today.
2. St. Louis: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor. St. Louis goes for the replacement for Orlando Pace to anchor their line.
3. Kansas City: Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest. Pioli gets the cornerstone for his defense.
4. Seattle: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC. Seattle goes for Hasselbeck's replacement over Walter Jones' replacement. Sanchez is their guy for their version of the WCO.
5. Cleveland: Brian Orapko, DE/OLB, Texas. Mangini gambles that Orapko isn't Vernon Gholston II.
9. Green Bay: Malcolm Jenkins, CB. Pack gets a big CB who will step into the shoes currently filled by Charles Woodson and Al Harris.
12. Denver: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College. Raji's drug test drops him out of the top 10 and Denver pounces on a talented 3-4 DT to anchor their defense.
15. Houston: Clay Matthews, OLB, USC. Matthew's pro day vaults him ahead of Cushing on the Texan's board.
16. San Diego: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU. Chargers gets\ the top 3-4 DE to the gap left by Igor Olshansky. Rey Maualuga and Knowshon Moreno are also options.
17. New York: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas. Jets get the last 1st round QB, a big strong-armed gunslinger in the Joe Flacco mold that Rex Ryan likes.
18. Denver: Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio St. Denver reportedly loves Wells and gets a bruising franchise back.
19. Tampa Bay: Peria Jerry, DT. Bucs lose out on Freeman so they get a penetrating DT in the Warren Sapp mold.
20. New Orleans: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC. New Orleans gambled on Wells still being available but lost out to Denver, so they go LB to fill a need.
Hearing that Parcells loves Nicks, the Giants trade up for the big WR they need to replace Plaxico Burress.
24. Atlanta: Sean Smith, CB/S, Utah. Their top 3 targets - Perry, Pettigrew and Matthews - are gone so the Hawks get a ballhawking CB/FS with freakish size.
25. Miami: Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut. With Nicks gone, Miami goes for a fluid, athletic CB. Connor Barwin is an option here.
26. Baltimore: Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland. Ravens get a big play WR for Flacco. Rey Maualuga and Vontae Davis are also options here.
27. Indianapolis: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida. Imagine what Peyton Manning can do with Harvin in addition to his other weapons, at both WR and out of the backfield. Nicks is also an option.

36. Cleveland: Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest. Browns get a playmaker for the backfield.
** Trade: Seattle trades #37 to New England for #47 and #89.
37. New England: Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC. Maualuga slips a bit and the Pats get an SILB to pair with Mayo.

44. Miami: Clint Sintim, LB, Virginia. Phins get a 3-4 OLB who can also play inside.
45. New England: Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan. Pats get their version of Troy Polamalu. Will Moore or Pat Chung could be the choice instead.
46. Houston: William Moore, S, Missouri. Houston gets a talented safety to anchor their secondary.
49. Chicago: Larry English, DE, Northern Illinois. Bears get a pass-rushing DE to go along with their new QB.
50. NY Jets: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers. Jets get a big WR to complement their strong-armed QB.
51. Dallas: Duke Robinson, OG, Oklahoma. Wide-body OG to eventually replace Larry Allen.
52. Green Bay: Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa. Packers get a big, bruising runner.

The Pats end up with Barwin, Beatty, Maualuga and Delmas on day 1. Not too shabby.

"The Pats end up with Barwin, Beatty, Maualuga and Delmas on day 1. Not too shabby."

That would be great for us.
With Denver having 2 picks ahead of us I hope they go don't grab a player we wanted. I hope they trade up to grab Sanchez.

would be awesome

TJ Lang, and a decent low round OT and id be delighted

The odds of Rey Maualuga falling to the Ravens in R1 are about a 1000-1 after his unreal pro day. He's locked in now as a clear top 15 pick. Yes he still a guy that I think BB is targeting. Look for the Pats to make a deal wtih Washington for #13 if Rey is still there.

Aside from that, I love your effort, work and insight. It's a great read.

Which unreal pro day was that? I understand that Maualuga ran a respectable 40, but he reportedly had poor footwork in drills. According to Nolan Nawrocki, "Maualuga, who worked out fully for scouts after pulling up with a hamstring injury in the 40-yard dash at the Combine, appeared noticeably more lean and compact, being clocked at 4.68 and 4.7 in the 40 by one veteran trigger. However, evaluators were not impressed by Maualuga's 'football movement,' with one saying he was 'not clean enough' to warrant consideration by their team."

I'm not saying that he couldn't be a top 15 pick, but "locked in now as a clear top 15 pick" seems a stretch.

Mathews was the big winner from the USC workouts from what I have herd and Malauga did better then his combine but then again I could have done better. I am a fan of Malauga but do not see him as a top 15 lock without getting into his Wonderlic test. He showed poor in Mobile then fallowed that with a poor showing at the Combine. At his pro day he looked alright but not like a top 15 pick.

I am basing it on his 40 and game film. What more does anyone need to see to know what this guy is going to do in the NFL. Game film, and BB would tell you this, is the most optimum evaluator of NFL talent, not the "trained-up", "Juiced-up" combine numbers. I think he made Matthews and Cushing into the players they are not the other way around.

Rey is going to be a better version of Lofa Tatupu and a future game-changer. I am betting and banking on him not getting past Denver at #12, assuming Sanchez if off the board, which is a given. If he find his way past Denver, again look for BB to make a phone call to Snyder.
