BB on James Sanders

Not to mention he takes AWFUL angles of pursuit. I mean really pathetic attempts at chasing down the ball carrier.

I disagree. You could look at isolated plays and see mistakes that any player makes. One the whole however, Sanders doesn't make many. Just because he is not a high profile player, does not mean he does not have great value to this defense.

Bob Sanders and Ed Reed are great players who are great playmakers. If BB had them, he would design his defense to play to their strengths. You cannot, however have 11 All-Pros on both sides of the ball in the salary cap era.

Yeah, it's Karen Guregian and the Herald, but it's not the Hack, so I figure we should give them credit when it's warranted.

James Sanders glad to be back - BostonHerald.com

It's gotta be bs. According to a very classy, very well respected media guy, BB's players all hate him.

Man, that's a hecckuva mole! Is he going for that Aaron Neville vibe?

Another thread how 1 or 2 highlight plays where a RB came into the backfield after getting through the front 7 is being judged.IN 07-06 watch the game against chargers . He was juked a few times which made the highlights but our front 7 could not even touch LT and sanders was tackling him every down.He missed once and it was on nfl live so he is bad. That juke was on ESPN for a week yeah the whole game the front 7 was thrashed but do not let that cloud your judgement.

I do not get it merriweather is out their running around making plays last year and yet people have figured out he is doing it with out the help of his is safety partner not is taking care of the safety responsibilty letting him do his thing.

looks like pepper for seymour .seymour gets less sack so get rid of him for a OLB....but with a avg DE the OLB will be neutralized but who cares.I am suprised no one started a vince for peppers thread as vince gets what 1 or 2 sack a year compared to peppers.

He is the worst starting player in the NFL. They are better instantly when he is not there - just look at last season. Absolute liability is the passing defense. Go watch tapes of first phins game - he almost makes me miss myron guyton. The one blackeye of this offfseason was resigning him.

Worst. post. ever.

The clowns in this thread can rail on Sanders all they want. The team's (and, by extension, Belichick's) words and actions speak louder than your Amateur Hour analysis.

The FACT is that Sanders is an above-average safety in the NFL. He is a serviceable starter and a top-flight backup/rotational player. He is probably the best tackler in the secondary and a leader on the field.

In sanders case when hes out there its like were playing with 10 men out there, the guy is invisible.

Perhaps you ought to pay more attention. He is just as visible as the other guys in the backfield, save for Meriweather who seems to be turning into an elite safety and a playmaker.

Some day you'll realize that the NFL =/= Madden, and it's not practical to have All-Pro's at every position. I mean, the Patriots did win a Super Bowl with Tebucky Jones playing safety.

Jack, Hello. How are you today? You look well. I have missed your witty repartee the last few days.

I just wanted to let you know that everything you say on these pages are 100% correct. You have convinced me. I am now a convert on Mr. James Sanders. The guy is really neat. You are correct. Your intellectual reasoning has made me see the light. I thought I knew a little about the sport but I thank you for enlightening me on Patriots personnel. I stand by you.

I for one, loved your Madden logical reasoning. It was astute to say the least. Let them put that in their pipes and smoke it, right?

In the future you posters, please no more silly, uneducated remarks about Mr. Sanders or you will have to answer to me! You Amateur Hour analysis cousins will have to earn our respect here or else we shall continue making snide remarks about your comments and suppositions that you so deserve.

Jack, you have a wonderful first day of April and we look forward to more incite. I got your back on this one now!
Best Regards,

You know, Reiss does a mailbag for the Globe. Why don't you send him an email asking him to find out how the Patriots graded Sanders' play in the past couple of seasons?

No......... I'm good. I am a convert. JB has me convinced. I think Sanders is the bees-knees now! I am now of the thought that the hundreds of people that know more than anyone here on this forum that say that the Pats need a SS are full of hokum.

Just because they never attempted to sign him and let him walk in FA and low balled him to come back and he actually took it is utter nonsense. If JB says he is an above average safety, it is in my best interest not to stand to be ridiculed. I have you guys backs on Mr. Sanders. You win........

1.) Did the team, agent or player state that the Patriots never attempted to sign Sanders and let him walk?

2.) How do you define "lowballed"?

3.) Most teams have how many safeties on their squad? Take that number and divide by 2. If Sanders is ranked in the higher half, he's above average.

4.) Please explain the "hundreds of people" comment, show us where they've said what you claim they've said, preferably with context regarding Sanders, and explain how they know more than anyone here on this forum.

5.) I didn't ridicule you, I gave you a suggestion. Send Reiss a request about getting the Patriots' grading for Sanders.

Hey man. Don't ya think that the poor microphone has been through enough. It's bad enough that the poor thing had to spend hours in such close proximity to Douche Jaskson's mouth, don't you think calling it a mole is piling on a little bit? :(

Good points. Well he did not attempt to sign but you are right, could have been offered a contract. Score one for DI. I enjoyed the Safety comment DI-2 DW-0. The former GMs and players involved within the media that have mentioned the fact that it is an area we need an upgrade. They know more than most of us here. Hundreds was truly an exaggeration but many. Your point on my exaggeration. DI-3 DW-0

And 4, in kind of in a round about way, tried that. Nothing concrete. Draw.

You win. My post rotted. But about 50/50 here on this forum believe that the player can be replaced with an upgrade. Is that a fair statement? As some would say, that the 50% I happen to lean toward are all berserk? I have watched the man play. My glasses weren't dirty. We had the worst pass against yardage in the NFL. It was at least 1/4 his fault....point for me?

If we draft a Safety in the first two rounds, I believe I am credible. If not I am yours.

Key words being "within the media". You don't get in the media without having an extreme opinion. No one wants to hear word after word about how things are probably good but could also be bad. To the media as an entity, a player is either a star or a bum who needs to be replaced before a team can compete. There's no middle road, and thus very little truth in the opinions of the media, regardless of whether the person speaking is a former player.

If we draft a Safety in the first two rounds, I believe I am credible. If not I am yours.

Again, can't a team draft depth and competition at a position without Sanders being terrible? One thing does not prove the other, it just proves the player they drafted has value.

I don't pretend that Sanders couldn't be upgraded, because I certainly think he could be. That's a far cry from "he sucks", etc..., and I think assigning a 1/4 share to Sanders is unfair considering just how awful the #2 cornerback play was. Steven Hawking could have gone for a 100 yard receiving game against whoever was playing the #2 cb spot for the Patriots.

But value is a function of need as well. Dropping Vrabel is a sign that the OLBs need improvement/youth. Signing two big name CBs is a sign that the CBs need improvement. Likewise drafting a safety on day 1 or an OLB on day 1 would be a sign that those positions need improvement. Sanders might be a solid backup player and knows the system but he can be improved upon. Not every player on the Pats is a franchise or very good player. BB tries to get stronger on EVERY position on the roster. He has said as much before.

This is definitely true when BB drafts, and I think it will be even more valid than normal this season, given the number of high draft picks the team currently has.

Definitely- I'd say that the truth is somewhere in between. For example, the Pats drafted a QB first day last year. Doesn't mean that the starting QB situation was up in the air, obviously: does mean that some combination of the following was true: 1) the guy that was available was very talented, and b) the team could use more depth at the position. No matter how good the starter is, BB will draft a good player for depth with a first-day pick. Not to say thta your point contradicts that, just elaborating a little more, really.

That's kind of what I was getting at in a way. Just because a position CAN be upgraded, doesn't mean that the player sucks or that we're screwed if we DON'T upgrade it. There's usually truth in the middle, but middle opinions don't get website hits.

Sanders may not be an all-pro, but safety is not the Pats' highest priority. He and Meriweather are young, have upsides, and aren't liabilities.

Anyone who says Sanders sucks pretends to know more than BB. Credible? You make the call.
