I know Browns got some question marks, regardless of his production last year, but assuming he drops to the 2nd round (which last I checked is where he's supposed to go) would Belichick pull the trigger on him?

I know our RB by committee looks largely set - and there's other needs on the team - but we don't expect Belichick to be needs driven - nor is he one to be concerned about too much besides production.

... more to the point, does anyone think Belichick considers him at #34 if he's there?

I sure hope not. I want a quality defensive player at 34, or one of the OT's that might fall to us at 34. I am so locked in this being a defense heavy draft that the idea of drafting a running back or receiver is as unpleasant as picking a TE, at least for me anyways.
We have the opportunity to set the team up on D for the next 5 years if we draft well at 23 34 and 47. I suspect that we will flip 58 into 2010 and would not be surprised if we trade down from 23 for an additional 2nd or early third this year.
We have so many option and the free agent signings, particularly at CB, have allowed us to really do a lot of things and be very flexible going into the draft.
I want defensive play makers. This is how we set the team up going forward.
Now watch BB draft a receiver, TE and running back on day 1!!!!!
In BB I trust.
Respects,

Good player, worthy of a 2nd round. But I hope we don't pull the trigger on a RB that early.

I wouldn't - however with so many picks, if we actually use them all we have a chance to get a stud at pretty much any position. If they LOVE Brown and think he's a big time RB then so be it. We can still get defense at 1, 2b and 2c.

Just a quick note to Mayo... I really appreciate your posts. You are a smart dude and its guys like you who make me come here everyday. Thank you!

well, the pick of Brown in the 2nd by the Pats strikes me as one of those moves that no one sees coming but that everyone in hindsight should expect... a player with proven accomplishments but who's measurables don't meet up with NFL standards

Belichick of course is more impressed by accomplishments.

I also seem to recall Belichick agreeing with the adage, if you want a player you need to pick him before someone else does (i.e. - take anyone you want before the prognosticators say he should go)

I fully expect a rookie RB in this draft - the RB by committee has some aging members and its a perfect time to allow a rookie to come in with no pressure to show what he can do.

Brown at 47 or 58 would be a viable option. I don't see it happening earlier. His best asset is his ability to catch out of the backfield, which would probably appeal to the Pats a lot. If Maroney were in a contract year I would be all for it. I don't see it happening, but stranger things have occurred.

Then there's the "all Connecticut" draft:

23 - William Beatty, OT
34 - Darius Butler, CB (you can reverse 23 and 34 if you like)
47 - Donald Brown, RB
58 - Cody Brown, DE/OLB

Trade up for Chip Vaughn in the early 3rd to cover SS, and it wouldn't be a bad draft at all.

I was watching NFL live today and they said the Pats are considering taking an RB with a day one pick. Two names they said to keep an eye out for are Knowshon Moreno and Donald Brown. I actually really like both backs I think Moreno could be an every down back. I think Donald Brown could be a Kevin Faulk replacement. If we were to get Moreno it would be at #23 or #34. If we were to get Brown it would be at #34 or #47. So Yes I would take him at #34 or #47 but it depends what we do with #23. #23 is basically the tone setter for this draft. If we go OLB then I think we would be picking BPA's for the rest of the draft for the most part. If we go another route than I think #34 has to be used on an OLB unless we think somebody will slip to #47.

I think Knowshon Moreno and Donald Brown are by far my 2 favorite day 1 backs in this draft. I'm still skeptical about a day 1 RB, but BB surprising us could happen. If we could get somehow get a 2 for Maroney (or even a 2010 2nd round pick) then I'd be leading the cheers to get either of those 2 guys.

If that happened, UConn HC Randy Edsall would probably think he's died and gone to heaven. :)

Just a thought but does anybody think we could send Maroney to AZ along with #34 for #31 to maybe grab a guard or a tackle that Pitt or Detriot maybe targeting?

I had the opportunity to see a decent amount of Big East games this yr, and I know Donald Brown is a burner. I'd be happy to include him on our squad, and I have trust in our coach (es) and scouting personal, no matter what number he comes at.

Remember we really do have the luxury (and history) of being able to choose overall talent above positional need. Of course we all understand and have our opinions about what our positional desires are--but I really wonder if our coach sees it the same way. He may have a little bit more confidence in things than we do, and also may see some improvement in areas from last yr that we don't necessarily agree with. Ex: the improvement of certain LB's or CB's for instance.

That coupled with the obvious inside information etc, and maybe some feelings that we may be able to get certain positional needs later in the draft tell me that we may indeed, be in for some surprises that we aren't expecting. Maybe particularly even on day one.

I understand we have the luxury of picking whoever we want but that would be 5 running backs on the roster and we also need a FB which would be 7 HBs with Green-Ellis going to the practice squad. I just can't see it happening unless a suprising cut was made.

If we draft a RB, then Hochstein will be our fullback.

Moreno would look good in a Pats uni:singing:

Yes. I think the wild card is even at a $700k CAP loss, Maroney for a pick, brings us a player with perhaps the preferred running style of BB. Now #34 becomes more realistic for Brown. Maroney is probably #3 on the depth chart right now. Opinions on that statement?

Cut or trade.

I like that deal.
Would anyone of this site object to in essence, swapping Maroney for William Beatty or Eben Britton? Yes or no?
I don't think we can get that pick unless we package another. I am against giving up #34.

OK, I would be fine with trading Maroney for Britton or Beatty. What you are suggesting is trading our 34 AND Maroney ofr Britton or Beatty. If Beatty or Britton are there at 31, I would favor trying to trade up, using a 6th or even a 4th.

I like that deal.

I don't know where people are getting the idea that Moreno is everydown but Brown is a Faulk-like player.

It's exactly the opposite.

Brown is both stronger and faster than Moreno, can jump much higher, has more explosion, more agility, etc. On down the line. Can catch better, can block better.

Moreno is considered higher because he has a natural wiggle that Brown probably doesn't have.

Brown is a Terrell Davis type player.

Moreno is much more of a Walter Payton type, but a little slower.
