I talked with Bill Belichick the other day about all his draft picks -- six in the top 96. He told me he is strongly considering packaging a few to move up. Or selling a few for picks next year. If you go to my most recent mock draft -- #5 -- I have Clay Matthews at #23, Connor Barwin at #34. So that's two rookie outside LBs. Donald Brown, Uconn RB, I have at #47. He's a terrific receiver and could eventually replace Kevin Faulk. At pick #58, I have them taking Utah DE Paul Kruger.

But an interesting point Belichick made: He knows 12 rookies can't make the Pats roster this year. So I would expect packaging deals all weekend long.

...pretty common knowledge just thought I would throw it out there.

While Donald Brown is a "good receiver" the problem is where to put him on the roster. The Pats aren't going to use Taylor as a FB. They already have Maroney, Faulk, Taylor and Morris. Morris and Taylor are both good receivers out of the backfield.

I don't see the Pats adding Barwin and Kruger, while ignoring the O-line.

Version 5.0 just showed up on nfl.com a few minutes ago, but it's only a 1 round mock (plus picks 51 and 59 for Dallas and Carolina, who don't have a 1st round pick). He does have the Pats taking Matthews at #23, but I'm not sure where the 2nd round picks listed came from. Link?

If the Patriots trade for Julius Peppers or sign Jason Taylor, then this pick is either gone or changes. For now, the rising star from USC is the perfect fit for Bill Belichick's defense. They come right back in the second round with another outside linebacker -- one who reminds me of Mike Vrabel. I can live with these picks but it will not happen. I've been saying for a while now our 6 top 100 picks will become 4 this year and 1 next year...... I have a "hunch" that keeps me up nights, but that's another story........

I'd be happy at the thought of getting 2 if not 3 LB's, (not sure if they'd want to convert Krueger) who would provide adequate depth and competition. Everyone wants to be younger at the position obviously, so I wouldn't mind this outcome at all. Donald Brown is an absolute burner at RB, and could be what we expected from Maroney. This scenario could provide us the best of everything, especially if we addressed the safety and o line picks in round 3 or 4. I'm getting antsy, and am sooo looking forward to the last wkd in April

I'm not particularly impressed with this draft. I can understand Matthews and Barwin if you believe Matthews can play SILB, but Kruger too? And he seems more like a 4-3 DE than a 3-4 OLB, and is way too small for a 3-4 DE. Donald Brown is a nice back, but we don't need a 1st day running back. And no safety? Take Jarron Gilbert at 47 and William Moore at 58 and you have a decent draft, though I'd prefer Beatty, Barwin, Gilbert and Moore myself.

I agree that BB will do some dealing, and that we'll most likely end up with four picks in the first three days. But there's no way I see them drafting Clay Matthews at 23. He's talented but a better value in later on. I can see Barwin at 34 with no problem. I like Brown, but unless they're planning on cutting someone it's hard to them taking him. I'd like to see them draft a tackle and an ILB.

How is Donald Brown a "good" receiver? The kid had 21 receptions as a senior, NFL Draft Scout sees potential, but notes he was limited in his "routes."

Receiving Skills: Brown has limited production as a receiver, but shows good hands in the minimal times he gets to catch the pigskin. He is fluid when trying to extend his hands away from the framework, especially when attempting to get to off-target tosses. He shows good concentration to look the ball in and is quick to turn and head upfield after the catch. He has the body control to adjust to the ball in flight and has a very good feel for getting open on the screens. GRADE: 6.5

Route Running: Brown is used mostly on short rounded, screens and flats. While he does not get many chances as a receiver, he does have very good change-of-direction agility and speed. He is also alert to coverage and does a nice job of getting proper position on screens. GRADE: 6.5

The kid looked good catching balls in shorts at his Pro Day, but Kirwin's smoking rope to suggest he's a Kevin Faulk replacement on such meager data.

Jesus, he has them with three 3-4 OLBs. Matthews and Barwin are my top choices and I'd be positively happy with both. But a RB and then another guy who projects to 3-4 OLB? Hell no. I'd be happier with Chung, Casey, or White at those picks. You come out with 4 of those 5 guys and you've got yourself a day 1.

The thing that LSU fans like me will remind you of is that Kevin Faulk was basically a receiver when he was at school. Think a bigger, less flashy Reggie Bush. He was a hybrid running back-wide receiver (as he is now) - he even lined up at TE and H-back, not a pure running back who flashed decent hands or anything. The only guy I can see as a "Kevin Faulk replacement" is Percy Harvin. But he replaces Faulk if he's a 1st rounder and Faulk is still really freaking good. There's better value in round 1 for the Patriots immediate and short-term needs.

Personally I love P.K. on the radio, a very good personality and a pretty good commentator. But this reeks of hedging his bets. I think he has a feeling that Patriots are going to take an OLB on day 1, clearly he is genius, but not a clue which one at what value. So he puts in 3 at different picks and value levels, and hopes one of them will be right.
