Mel Kiper's latest top 25 big board is out:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/melkiper/index

Some of his rankings of interest:

#8 - Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB
#15 - Tyson Jackson, DE
#17 - Robert Ayers, DE
#19 - Clay Matthews, LB
#21 - Brian Cushing, LB
#24 - Everette Brown, DE/OLB
#25 - Ray Maualuga, ILB

No DBs other than Malcolm Jenkins at #16. 3 RBs (#13 Moreno, #18 Wells, #22 Brown). No Michael Oher, Darius Heyward-Bey, or James Laurinaitis. Few DE/OLB conversions (no English, Sintim, or Barwin).

Who does he have us taking? He is never right so whoever he picks; we know that player won't be a Patriot.

Nobody gets our picks right. A few got Mayo last year, but that was because we were so high in the order. Other than that, nobody got Mankins, Maroney, etc.

hahah pleeeeeease have everette brown drop to pats i am really high on that guy

I think his latest mockery had us taking Clay Matthews at 23.

The only people that had us picking Maroney were Patriots Football Weekly/patriots.com

I think it was perillo.

I gotta hand it to him

He has 10 of the first 14 players on his board on offense.
We can only hope something like that happens in the draft.

Most people have the opposite in mocks.

Funny, I had them taking a RB in that draft, except it was DeAngelo Williams.

If Everette Brown and/or Maualuga drop to 23, the Pats have to take one of them, don't they? In either case, it's just a ton of talent at a position of need.

The report on wonderlic scores had Maualuga with a 15, that isn't a good score for a pats LB needing to learn a different game plan each week. No thanks.

I also had DeAngelo Williams as my preferred RB for the Pats in 2006. I still do.

I'm sure Brown and Maualuga would get a hard look, but the Pats will make up their own mind. McShay, Kiper, Banks and several others all had the Pats taking Keith Rivers last year with Mayo going considerably later in the 1st round, but the Pats decided he was their guy.

Is it ok for the Pats starting Nose tackle to have a 10 on the Wonderlic test then? Vince Wilfork knows how to play football and please us fans.

Now let's talk about great wonderlics. Ben Watson and his 41 has really helped him grasp what it is to be a great TE in this league. Workout Warrior and Wonderlic Wonder equates to I almost stripped Champ Bailey in the end zone on a Tom Brady INT in the worst game the Pats have played in 8 years. One of his few stellar plays of his career. And I do mean few as in handfull.

Is it true that he was a first down/second down linebacker and generally removed on passing downs? Sounds worthless for the Pats.

I agree - one would expect with TB back that once again the TB - Moss touchdown show will go on. Or Fred Taylor ploughing through for a TD. The offensive juggernaut should be back again in '09 which means the other teams will usually be playing from behind and throwing the ball alot. Which means 2 down LB's don't need to be taken in the first round. (Now if Malaluga drops to # 34 - that is another story. Although I am abit concerned more about how true the character issues are with him than just his wonderlic scores. Also Mayo can be calling the defensive signals.

Finally, I would expect Pats to trade pick # 34 for a 1st rounder in 2010. As is very doubtful that a team would give away a future 1st rounder for pick at slot #47 and very unlikely at slot # 58 as the value just isn't there.

mate i will garantee you both that maualuga will not drop to 34 and if by a miricle he does we will take him. how does someone go from top 10 pick to yeah i would be worried taking him early in the 2nd... i just don't get it. who cares about his score can the boy play football?

Same way 'franchaise QB's' (mock top 10 picks) routinely fall into 20's or further. (See Brady Quinn, Aaron Rodgers, etc.). It happens -especially with character red flags as he has. Also, 2 down ILB's are not as hard to find (nor as in demand in first round) as are franchaise QB's, franchaise OT's, stud pass rushers, shutdown corners, DT's. etc. Thats not just my opinion - thats the recent history of the draft first round.

As with most of these draftees , they have yet to play one down yet at NFL level. So there is no evidence yet that they can transition to the NFL level. It is just more likely that in the first round that level of talent should be able to cope with NFL competition.

Furthermore, Even if they have the talent - and can transition to the speed and tempations of the NFL (see Pacman Jones) it doesn't guarantee that they won't just take the money and loaf (see. Johnathan Sullivan, Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, D. Boston, Terrell, Chad Jackson etc. etc. and a very long list it is indeed..

Wow thats taking some liberties on the use of Franchise QB with both Rodgers and Quinn. Rodgers showed signs last year and faded fast. Quinn had 1 good game against a horrid defense. Those arent franchise QBs IMO.

Because he essentially is a less instinctive Jerod Mayo, for one, and I think he got exposed a little bit with Lawrence Jackson and Sedric Ellis moving on. This thought that Mauluga is a big body who's going to get his nose dirty and mix it up with the guards and fullbacks of the NFL was a myth last season, and not any less so this year -- he needs protection. I'm not sure ILB is his best fit in our 3-4. He also has attitude questions and showed up to the Combine woefully out of shape, which barring a severe injury, is really inexcusable.

I think he needs a lights-out Pro-Day to be a top 25 pick....which I'm sure he will.

So did Scouts Inc.'s Todd McShay. I think Matthews would be a horrible pick at 23. His best position here would be WILB, and that's already fixed. If forced to choose a USC LB, I'd rather have Cushing. He can be our super-sub while growing into the SILB position. Or is there too much of a resemblance to Bobby Carpenter?
