DANA POINT, Calif. -- Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox didn't give much credence to the idea that the Carolina Panthers would be open to trading franchised defensive end Julius Peppers to the Patriots for the No. 34 overall pick in next month's NFL draft.

At the NFC coaches' breakfast today at the NFL owners' meetings, Fox was asked what his reaction to the trade proposal, which was first reported by NFL.com on March 16, was.

"I can't really comment on exactly how I felt," said Fox. "It was almost laughable. That can't happen. Our system, I think most people are educated enough to understand our system. I didn't give it much thought at all actually."

Peppers has not yet signed his $16.68 million franchise tag tender and would have to be under contract before he could be traded.

Fox said he hasn't talked to Peppers since the premium pass rusher made it known that he'd like to be traded, telling the Charlotte Observer in February that he felt his potential could be truly maximized in a 3-4 defense. Fox runs a 4-3 defense in Carolina.

Fox was asked if hearing Peppers, who has made four Pro Bowls with Fox as his coach, say he'd maxed out in Carolina was stinging.

"No, because maybe I've felt that I've maxed out," said Fox. "The difference is there are contracts. That's professional sport. You just can't do whatever you want when you want. It doesn't surprise me. It doesn't sting me. It's just that's this league."

Fox disputed the perception that having to clear that much cap space for Peppers is a burden on the Panthers' other plans, saying Carolina had planned for it when they decided to use the franchise tag on Peppers.

"I don't know is Tom Brady's cap number a burden? Is Eli Manning's? I don't know. It's just part of what we do," Fox said.

When it was pointed out that the Panthers would have to pay Peppers more than a million a game, Fox delivered a bon mot.

"I don't get into salaries," said Fox. "I don't know what Elton John makes. I don't know what Bono makes. I'm sure they make pretty good numbers too."

Sounds like they want Peppers there.

Getting more and more likely he's going to be wearing a black and blue jersey in his first home game.

They can have him - We'll take Jason Taylor, Wilfork and Richard.

Nothing I have heard or read over the past week leads me to believe his chances of staying have improved.

Who wouldn't want him on their team?? Everyone has the same problem though....1MM per game is hard to fit into anyones cap, it won't happen here with him at that price, but 10MM could (not that he ever said he would come here or anywhere that cheap).

Talk is cheap

Panthers HC John Fox calls Pepper to Patriots trade "Almost Laughable"

Fox laughs off talk of Peppers to Patriots - The Boston Globe

After reading this it looks more and more like either the Panthers want Kraft's arm and leg for this to happen or its simply never going to even come close to it transpiring.

I doubt Fox makes this statement and then changes his mind

Back to Jason Taylor hopes as it appears to me to be the only possibility of any other big name FA joining the roster - Fox ain't going to budge and the fact that we beat his boys in the SB does not exactly make him giving up his best player realistic.

At this point a lot of FA are off the market so they might as well keep him for the Franchise number. By dumping Cassel quickly we were able to get the likes of Galloway, Bodden and Springs with freed up money. Of course it's a different situation as Cassel wouldn't have seen the field but the point is generally the same that the value of Peppers is him as a Player vs. the compensation and what they could buy with the saved money. As the latter piece is diminishing by the day side of the equation for keeping Peppers makes more sense.

I have no doubts or at least little doubt that Peppers is a Panther in 09

95% chance if you ask me

I knew it sounded too good to be true, but at the same time I feel good about the Pats defense with the free-agent additions, the numerous draft picks and hopefully an extended Wilfork by the time TC begins.

Do you think this is a ploy to get teams not to be interested so the Patriots can pick up Peppers? My sources are telling me that Peppers will be a Patriot this season!!

Ouija boards aren't that reliable.

Ouija boards aren't that reliable.

My friend (my source)(she was also dating my cousin) is BB's neice! She was with BB down in Florida! BB wasnt only scouting down there but on vacation. She said that BB was talking to Peppers agent to work out a deal. What BB said on WEEI is a ruse to pretend that nothing is happening(but it is). I asked specifically about how we would fit him into the cap. Heres what i heard. There will be a long term deal about 5-6 years(Peppers will be taking less money because he is transitioning to OLB so his value drops, so theres a better chance for us) I heard it will take time. Peppers wants to be a Patriot and BB wants him. Carruci is sticking with his story because he is right it should be done by the draft! I will be meeting BB when he comes to CT. So, i will try and get him to talk more about this, but i am more asking him about coaching because i coach!!

Can a ouija board do that??

I think a quote from Otto von Bismarck fits in nicely here:

"Never believe anything until it has been officially denied"

Ergo, Fox saying Peppers is not coming, means he definetly is.
