New Era Scouting Archive Three round mock draft

23. New England Patriots: Larry English DE/OLB Northern Illinois
34. New England Patriots: Louis Delmas S Western Michigan
47. New England Patriots: Pat White QB/WR West Virginia
58. New England Patriots: Jonathan Luigs C Arkansas
89. New England Patriots: Rashad Jennings RB Liberty
97. New England Patriots: Mike Thomas WR Arizona

What I find most interesting with the 3-round mocks is the FACT that the Pats can end up with 6 solid players in the top 100. The actual picks are a matter of preference, but when you look closely at the top 100 -- there's an enormous amount of talent available. :singing:

I don't think we take Pat White and another WR with the first 6 picks.

No ILB or OT?

Interesting draft. My take:

23 - Larry English is solid, though I prefer Connor Barwin (#41).
34 - with William Beatty off the board, I like the Delmas pick.
47 - too high by far for White. I would jump all over Robert Ayers here (#62) if he somehow lasted this long, which he won't.
58 - I'm OK with Luigs, though I would prefer Wood (#50) and might trade up to get him.
89 - Troy Kropog (#87) would be a nice pick if we could get him. Otherwise I'd probably trade this into 2008 if the draft had gone this way so far.
97 - I'd go for one of the athletic NT prospects - Chris Baker or Sammie Lee Hill; then Mike Wallace WR at 124. Thomas is a nice player, but too much in the Welker mold.

Totally agree, it's a great draft except of the puzzler of White. He's lousy value there too, passing up the likes of Eric Wood, Clint Sintim, Darius Butler, and...holy smokes, Robert Ayers! I'll take Wood & Ayers over White & Luigs, and take my choice of English & Ayers as OLB & SILB.

Hadn't seen yours when I posted, honest!:p

It's like they read my mind!

The Pat White pick does stick out as odd, but the rest is PERFECTAMUNDO! :singing:

I see the names of Chris Baker and Sammie Lee Hill thrown around alot. Why? I watch alot of football, study alot of tape, keep up with current draft insider info. Aren't these guys more undrafted free agent types? I doubt either could make our practice team. I must be missing something. That doesn't mean they won't be steals-I just don't see where this all started.

New era scouting has a pretty realistic looking mock. I like most of the players they list. I think they have a good understanding of the types pf players that Pat's prefer. Mike Thomas is a very realistic selection for Pats system. Pat White is starting to climb a lttle higher than I would go for him. His value will end up being early 2 by draft time. Who doesn't like Engish-Delmas early on. I nteresting to see Coach B. working so closely with UCONN players. Probable rd 2 types. Gaging value*for #34.

Delmas supposedly has a 15 wonderlic score I don't see that appealing to BB.

I think his score was actually a 12. But his football instincts and smarts seem much better than his score would indicate, and he reportedly showed nice leadership at the Senior Bowl. So I think that he may just be one of those kids who doesn't test well. I'm sure the Pats will look into this if they seriously consider Delmas.

What was Merriweather's wondelic?

Yeah, it's an unusual mismatch of reputation & score. Before the Wonderlic, football smarts and leadership were touted as among Delmas' top strengths. That's a rather different situation than, say, Maualuga's.

I'd rank safety as a middling position in terms of the importance of the Wonderlic. BB has drafted DBs with a wide range of scores, the lowest being Samuel and the highest Wheatley (we don't know Meriweather's score). Guss Scott and Dexter Reid were both drafted for safety with below-average scores.

Indeed. The White pick is exactly the type of floor/ceiling combination I would stay away from in the 2nd round. And I think BB will do the same.

Ayers being available at 62 makes me want to throw this entire mock in the garbage can.

I don't know Meriweather's score - I've searched all over the web, and haven't been able to find it.

The "acceptable" score for a safety is supposed to be somewhere around a 19. Reggie Nelson and Kenny Phillips both scored 16 on the test. My guess is that Delmas' score would result in some extra scrutiny, but given his reputation as a leader and a player with football smarts, I wouldn't discount him just on a test result.

I haven't seen Delmas play, but I just can't understand how BB would take Delmas over Rashad Johnson. They're not that different size-wise or athletically. Johnson was more productive in a tougher conference. And there's the Saban factor. The only way this happens, IMO, is if Saban actually gives BB a reason NOT to draft him. And given what BB said about the evolution of the S position, I don't think 5'11" and 200 lbs is considered undersized.

Bill doesn't just use the Wonderlic as a gauge. Also, you might want to look back at some of the current Patriots that BB has drafted. You'll be surprised...

Here are some of the current Patriots:

Vince Wilfork - 10
Ty Warren - 15
Ellis Hobbs - 15
Mankins - 31
Kaczur - 29

You're right, they're about the same size. But stylistically they're quite different. Johnson is pretty much a pure FS with great ball skills and intelligence, who plays above his physical ability. Delmas is much more of a hitter, more of a SS with FS kind of range than a true FS. With 5 lbs. he would be at the same playing weight as Bob Sanders and Troy Polamalu, with a bit more height, and his style is to me more reminiscent of them than of a FS. He also has much more physical ability than Johnson, and has showed excellent leadership skills.

So I think it comes down to what BB wants, and who complements his existing backfield better. I see Meriweather as more of a natural FS even though he played mostly at SS last season, and I could see a Delmas/Meriweather backfield being terrific. But if you leave Meriweather at SS and look for a ballhawking FS then Johnson makes sense, although if that is the case I prefer Sean Smith at FS.

Sign me up!

Merriweather has shown that he can do a little of both and Sanders is a guy I'd prefer to see playing closer to the LOS.

I'd rather see Meriweather at the LOS. He showed a great ability to get to the QB and his hands are average at best.
