NFL DRAFT BIBLE - Workout Watch: Pats To Visit Wyoming

He may not have been invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, but that doesn't mean teams don't know who Devin Moore is. The New England Patriots will fly out to Laramie, Wyoming to workout the running back on March 23rd.

New England was sixth in the league in rushing last season but used six running backs to get there. While the Patriots have five veterans on their roster in Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Lawrence Maroney and the recently acquired Fred Taylor—all could be short-term answer due either to age or injury. They could be viewing Moore as a long-term replacement for the 32-year old Faulk, who has 10 years of tread on his tires. Moore has the speed, quickness and hands to be an ideal third-down back at the next level.
---

Moore is the third RB the Pats will have worked out so far, Rashad Jennings and Bernard Scott are the others.

As a Faulk fan, I'm in no hurry to see him pack it in just yet. But if the Pats feel now is a good time to find his future replacement -- than so be it.

Moore is certainly one of the draft's speediest backs -- and arguably the fastest. Straight line speed is his game, as he's a slasher not a juker. Decent enough hands as a 3rd down/change-of-pace back. Blitz p/u is an issue for all of the RB candidates.

Listed as 5095 187, with a Pro Day 4.34 40. Strong for his size with an impressive 28 bench reps. Projected as a late day two prospect, although he could move into the round four range.

Thoughts on the player? Other preferred RBs?

Moore is one of my favorite 2nd day players in the draft, a "poor man's Percy Harvin"/Darren Sproles type of all-purpose player. As a long-term replacement for Kevin Faulk he would be ideal. The question is where we can fit him on the roster. Certainly worth a look.

I love Faulk - we could save $3M by moving him, though, which could be a possibility if we draft a replacement.

I'm a big Faulk fan too, but he is aging, with a fairly big contract for a role player, and his contract is up after 2009. I could see using that money elsewhere. Also, with Maroney/Taylor/Morris it's hard to see him getting a huge amount of carries, though he will doubtless earn his keep as a clutch third down guy.

As I said, Moore is certainly worth a look.

Moore was unimpressive in Texas vs The Nation. San Jose State's Yonus Davis 5'6" 189, was a stronger, more effective runner, showing Faulk-like quickness and fearlessness running between the tackles. He also appeared to be a better receiver.

Ringer or Moreno might be the best overall options, but I'm not really interested in Day One RBs.

Ian Johnson is the best Faulk analogue on Day Two. Johnson looked solid on blitz pick-up in the Poinsettia Bowl against TCU's #2 defense. He's good on STs and as a receiver, and he's found the end zone once or twice in his career.

It's too bad Navy's Shun White won't be available, he was an impressive scat back.

I liked what little I saw of Tyrell Sutton (Northwestern), he's Faulk-sized, quick and fast.

TCU's Aaron Brown was very impressive in the Pointsettia Bowl and not too bad in the Shrine game.

La'rod Stephens-Howling out of LaPitt was the other half of the LeBackfield with LeSean McCoy. He's short, but has that Maurice Jones-Drew freaky strength in his lower body. I'd take him in the 7th or target him in free agency.

My Curtis Brinkley thoughts should be well known by now.

As long as your thoughts on Jasper Brinkley remain under control.

Oh...I have a tantric-like self-control over my draft desires. I control my obsessions...they don't control me.

Plus, Jasper is really, really, good.

So is your self-reported drinking before the sun hits the yardarm an obsession or just a hobby? ;) (And Jasper isn't really that good :p )

It's generally an accepted practice for lack of a better thing. As there have been no legal nor marital consequences, I call it a hobby.

Generally speaking a RB with a skinny lower body is a scary sight. Even as a KR, he is an inury waiting to happen.

I'm not against having a shorter RB on the roster, but I would prefer the bowling ball type builds to the chicken leg builds. The bowling balls seem to last longer.

This kid is a beast. I would love it if we picked him up

Marlon Lucky could be a nice 3rd down-receiving back. He could explode in that role.

I saw this kid play against Colorado State. He has serious wheels. I think he would be great on the Pats, exactly what they need -- a really fast kid who ran run screens and returns kicks.

How high do you realistically see Moore going? Is he likely to be a 3rd round guy, or later?

5th to 7th imho.

I would be thrilled to give him a shot with a 5th or later pick. I could see him going earlier though.

Even though we have a lot of picks, there are an awful lot of 2nd day guys who appeal to me in this draft:

- Devin Moore, RB
- TJ Land, OT/G
- Trevor Canfield, OG
- Mike Wallace, WR
- Jason Phillips, ILB
- Sammie Lee Hill, DT
- Chris Baker, DT
- Joe Burnett, CB
- Kevin Huber, P

Just to name a few.
