Pat White in Round 2?

ESPN's Mel Kiper says he "keeps hearing New England" in discussions about West Virginia QB Pat White.

Kiper suggests that the Patriots will give White a long look in round two. White recently worked out for New England as a wide receiver and quarterback.

If they think he can play wide receiver a year or two down the road, might make more sense. Replace Galloway (or maybe Moss) on the WR roster with him.

I personally wouldn't like to see White going any higher than #89 for us. I think there are likely to be much better values at #58.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. White is a team player,coachable, versatile.
I could see him develop into a unique role player in New England. Could also keep a # 3 roster spot at QB. Team first guy.

We should just draft a pure WR instead of White because I doubt we would need him as a QB and there would be better value for WR at the 58th pick. I would be happy to get him in the 3rd though.

I completely agree. Our first 4 picks need to be some comb. of OL, OLB, SS, CB & DL.

In general, I think the Wildcat works best with a guy like Ronnie Brown. He's got the power to break a tackle and, in that formation, one broken tackle equals a big play. Using a Pat White at the position makes the pass more of a threat, but the big run less of a threat.

I wouldn't take White before round 3. But he does have some potential as a flex WR/wildcat option for New England.

It is my opinion that the Wildcat is a fad, and it is not worth trying to specifically replicate. I echo the sentiments of the writer a few up who said that it makes no sense to design plays that do not involve Brady, Moss and Welker. Gadget offenses can work in small doses, but drafting a quarterback who does it and running the ball with the quarterback a lot...that's called running the option. And defending the option has been done a lot by football players and coaches over the years. The "Wildcat" teams last year, like the Dolphins, had most of their success using it the first handful of times, before it was on film. The Pats completely shut down the Dolphins when they tried to do it a second time.
NFL teams all run relatively similar offenses because these are the best ideas people have had so far; the hardest ones to consistently defense. Drafting to run gadget plays is all well and good for some, but as much as I like Pat White, I'm don't feel it good value to be using a 2nd rounder on him.

Amen! Any time Brady is not taking the snap, the other team has to be happy. Drafting White in order to play the wildcat would just be lunacy.

While the Wildcat stuff isn't important, White is a fast, super-athletic guy who can throw the ball pretty well. He's a better athlete and quarterback than Antwan Randle El was, who was one of the best returners in the league and has been a pretty good wide receiver over his career, as well as coming in handy on trick plays.

I wouldn't be unhappy if White was made a Patriot with their third pick in the 2nd.

I predict you will hear lots of reports about potential Pats interest in White right up to the draft, causing Miami to take him ahead of us either at 44 or 56, and push a more suiteable prospect down to us.

It's like the insane idiots who thought the Patriots should trade up to #1 last year to get Darren McFadden.

That's not to say that taking White is bad per se, but drafting him specifically for gadget plays doesn't make a ton of sense.

I only like this pick at the end of Round 2 if:

1. They think White can be a legit WR in 2 years.
2. In the interim, he can be effective in the return game.

I have no problem waiting a few seasons for him to develop as a WR if he can be an above-average punt returner, something NE sorely lacks.

Not as thrilled with him coming in for the wildcat; that's a gimmick that subpar offenses need to generate a spark. A solid passing & running team like NE has no need for trick plays.

I can't see the Patriots taking White for any reason. First off, the guy has said that he does not want to play WR in the NFL under any circumstances. He's said he's a QB and nothing else. Secondly, if he's that stubborn about switching, what else is he stubborn about? That doesn't read as a team player to me..
