Things like this define a class guy. New to the team? Heck, I don't care, have my number. You earned it through many years in this league:

But don't expect any jersey-number fireworks when it comes to new Patriots running back Fred Taylor and No. 28.

If Taylor wants 28, the number he wore with the Jaguars, the player currently donning it is willing to give it up. Soft-spoken defensive back Antwain Spann might try to bring Taylor down on the practice field, but he's not about to stand in his way if he wants 28.

"If he approached me, I’d do the right thing and respect him. He’s been in the league a long time, that's a future Hall of Famer," Spann said. "For me, I’m not established yet. It’s not about a number for me. It’s about trying to earn a roster spot."

You figure with the additions in the secondary and with the draft coming up, Spann probably won't even make the team.

Still a nice gesture. Most guys want a Rolex.

Omg. Is the person who rates all these threads with 1 star, a jealous fan of another team? Jesus. Time to even it out with a 5 star.

Re: Antwain Spann will hand over #28 if asked by Fred Taylor

great mentality by Antwain. he understands respect and hard work because hes fighting for a roster spot . good special teamer and could be a 4th safety on this team

A future Hall of Famer? Fred Taylor?
I'm glad the Pats have him even though I know he's
a little long in the tooth. I saw him run just last year
and he was pretty damn good but....
Hall of Famer?

wow yea. i agree. I would be surprised if he makes the team.

Ty Warren did the same thing with Ted Washington.

That said, Spann IS a class act. I base that judgment almost entirely on my several-sentence conversation with him some time back. ;)

he better make the team or ill hav to make a new user name. Hes the one who forced the fumble on eric parker's punt return in the playoffs against san diego

Add in 4.6 yards/attempt career. Look at the list - everyone above him in career yardage is either a Hall of Famer or soon will be. Fred's the man (too bad he will go in as a Jaguar, but hopefully the picture in the Hall with his biggest smile will be in a Pats uniform raising the Lombardi).

emmit smith's record is untouchable

I assume you mean total yards. Smith had 4.2 Y/A - less than Taylor's average. Smith wouldn't even have that career title if Barry Sanders (5.0 Y/A for the lousy Lions) didn't retire early. As Sanders would have passed Smith himself, I will never say never as to Smith's record falling.

Re: Antwain Spann will hand over #28 if asked by Fred Taylor

Fred Taylor will most certainly be a Hall of Famer. To say otherwise is a little ridiculous, no offense.

FYI you don't go into the hall as a member of a specific team like baseball. The bust is just of the player's head. Obviously Taylor will always be synonymous with the Jaguars, but a ring with the Pats would make his enshrinement a little easier.

Now I'm waiting to hear Wilhite saying he'll hand over #24 to Shawn Springs...

I actually did know that (or shall I say I learned it from a Hall of Fame discussion in a previous thread) but I needed a way to work in the Lombardi reference after a career with the Jaguars. My creativity is sorely leaking these days. Nevertheless, thanks for the info.
