My "no OLB" day one for the Patriots

With Thomas, Woods, Crable, Redd and TBC we have enough OLB unless Belichick is going to sh!t can two of them. We've only lost Vrabel but added Crable (out most of the year), Redd (out until injuries hit) and TBC.

So :

1 - Beatty
2a - Delmas
2b - Sintim (to play ILB)
2c - Gilbert

We get out OT of the future (RT of the present), 3rd Safety, Bruschi replacement and potential Seymour replacement.

I hope Beatty is there in the first round, but if not, I would be happy with Alphonso Smith too.

I would be very happy if things worked out this well for us. It all depends on value when we are picking. If a top OL falls to us at #23 it is a position that needs to be addressed with TB coming off injury. Safety is a huge need and Dalmus is going to be a good one (I hope he can bulk up by another 10 pounds as he hit like a train but I am worried about how his small frame will hold up).

Then Mack, Delmas/Moore and one of the OLB's in the second round

Like you im not sure its as big of a priority as some are all making out esp if we get Taylor or somehow manage to land Peppers (not ruling either of these out)

We have AD, Woods, Crable, TBC, Redd - and im not sure its a position BB likes in the draft? I think BB rates Woods

I don't get the logic part, outside of this thread being opinion, so perhaps you are monumentally challenged.

If he cares not to address the consensus weakness facing the Pats this year, well that's his choice but it's not logic.

I'm just saying that I disagree with the consensus weakness. Especially in the near term, pick your OLB that will be available at #23 and I don't think he is more ready to play than the other guys. Unless he's already considered a bust, Crable is more ready than Barwin both in terms of college play and having a year in the system. Our depth chart at OLB actually has more young players than more of our positions; the only thing we don't know is what Belichick thinks of them.

Of course, if we sign J. Taylor that locks this in. With youth already at LB I'm excited about the holes we can fill in with young guys elsewhere.

the pats actually have enough of every position on their roster, so they don''t need beatty,delmas,sintim or gilbert either......

currently, the OLB group is at its weakest state since belichik has been here.....only thomas has proven to be an effective starter and he's over 30...........woods? crable? redd? TBC? you kidding me? is this some kind of joke?

Call it what you want, I never said it was more logical than anything else.

That said :

Logic does tell me that Belichick kept Woods, Crable and Redd around because he sees some talent there. And facts tell me that we have more young guys at OLB than most other positions. So combining logic and facts reaches the conclusion for me that OLB isn't nearly as needy as some think - especially if we sign Taylor.

TBC is mostly a ST guy I agree. I disagree with the rest, though, we have more young guys at OLB than at most positions. Whether Belichick likes them as future starters is tougher to say.

I was thinking this as well. Do we really need an OLB to develop? We've got young guys already....

I would love to get some young OL because we were terrible last year when we had to play with backups. Cassel was running for his life and we know Brady isn't as mobile as Cassel.

I also agree that we need to shore up our S depth. I would love to get William Moore, even though he had a down year last year, when he is healthy, he is a playmaker. I also wouldn't be surprised if we pick a WR early on. Moss is getting up there, Galloway is a one year fix, and Lewis is not the answer. We need to integrate a young WR so we won't have to be doing a chinese firedrill when Moss/Galloway are gone.

Well, if history is a guide, if they think they're set at LB, they may pass on LB this year. Remember, they passed on Linebackerpalooza back in 2006 (that was the year a lot of scouts said had the best LB crop in about 20 years or so).

I personally do not believe this is the case and am willing to be anyone that the pats will add players either in day one or via a substantial FA signing or trade (by substantial, I mean a starter)

beyond thomas, the unit is littered with garbage when it comes to a starter

Who did they "pass" on in 2006:

- AJ Hawk - taken #5 by GB
- Chad Greenway - taken #17 by Minnesota
- Bobby Carpenter - taken #18 by Dallas

So they clearly passed on Manny Lawson, taken #22 by SF one pick after Maroney, on Matthias Kiwanuka as a DE/OLB conversion project (taken #32 by the Giants) and on some of the 2nd round 4-3 guys like Thomas Howard and Roger McIntosh. That doesn't seem to be much of a guide. Who's to say the Pats wouldn't have taken Greenway or Carpenter if they had been available at 21?
