Just suppose (and its VERY possible) that it does not work out with Peppers or Jason Taylor coming to Foxboro

After these 2 guys (most Pats fans want at least 1 of them to come here) - Who would be your immediate NEXT player that is available and not a unrealistic huge contract signing from whats left out there in FA ect:?

To summarize this question: Take away Jason Taylor and Julius Peppers and who is next on your list of favorites to sign up?

I would concur with the same sentiment,I think the team is good now and only a few outstanding rookies are needed for the cherry on top of the whipped cream but I am sure some guys in here can think of someone who may be disgruntled with thier current team or is still walking the marketplace.

mark my words, Peppers is not going to sign here unless he takes a huge pay reduction...not with the players we have to resign over the next couple years.

Woods would be more ready to play than whatever name you put in there.

With Woods, Crable, Redd and even TBC in a role, we may not even draft an OLB on day one, it all depends how much they like W, C and R. If they like them then we already have three young OLB.

I don't disagree, I was just playing by the rules of the OP.

I think Peppers is indeed too much cavier for the remaining tuna fish thats left in cap money and IMO BB is done with older players after signing Springs, Galloway and Fred Taylor and it would be a shocker to see him dish out more money for another old player, even though Jason is still better than a lot of guys today.

Bring Andre Tippett out of retirement.

Re: Suppose it does not work out with Peppers or Jason Taylor ....

I'm not sure we'll add anyone unless it's a clear upgrade.

We've lost Vrabel.

We're adding Crable who was IRed most of the year. And Redd who was PSed until late November when Thomas was already out but not IRed yet.

Amongst all the OLB talk that's the dirty little secret. With Thomas, Woods, Crable, Redd and TBC we don't need another OLB; we just need a couple to take the next step. Unless we can get a Peppers or Taylor we will likely stick with what we've got IMO unless Bill doesn't think the young guys can get it done.

Indeed. Not really anything left in free agency so I would go with whomever Mr. Belichick decides is the best fit at OLB in the draft.

Re: Suppose it does not work out with Peppers or Jason Taylor ....

Just echoing what others are saying. The team doesn't really need to add a marquee free agent to bolster the OLB group. With AD, Woods and Crable, not to mention TBC and Redd, they just need to focus on developing good depth. Anything on top of that, whether through the draft or free agency, shouldn't really be depended upon to dramatically change things next season. It would be great to have Peppers, sure, but I doubt he'll be needed.

Jason Taylor...

Pats' Kraft open to idea of adding Taylor - Around the NFL - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

DANA POINT, Calif. – While speculation grew last week as to whether the New England Patriots would attempt to trade for Panthers DE Julius Peppers, the club appears to have interest in fellow veteran pass rusher Jason Taylor.

"Great player," owner Robert Kraft said with a big smile while at the owners meetings. "I'm sure that can happen if he wants it."

Two sources close to Taylor indicated last weekend that the Patriots are his top choice. Taylor has spent most of the month with his family in South Florida since being cut by Washington and is in no drastic hurry to sign with a team.

This is what I think-

Peppers is still an option, but there is no way you sign him without reworking Tom's contract....again. This would allow for some cap relief and allow you to rework Wilfork as well - However, if Peppers comes over, Wilfork's contact will not get done until late this year. I'm not in favor of doing this BTW.

Taylor is coming to the Patriots for a 1-2 year deal, I just think it's inevitable. Take a shot at me if you like, but I think the conversations have been had and they are waiting for some resolution to the Peppers deal (and allowing the spring workouts to go by and then no one is mad he's not in Foxboro this Spring). Draft day I would guess.

Other than that, we get talent in the draft.

Ah, yes, the true caveat.

I also think it's likely we'll sign Taylor - in fact I think we probably haven't already just so he doesn't have to be in Foxboro all offseason - or have to answer questions about why he isn't. He's played for Saban before so Belichick knows how he could use him and Taylor understands the concepts so he wouldn't need the indoctrination time as much as others. Peppers intrigues me as a medium term solution but the money and draft picks needed for him make Taylor more attractive to me.
