Lions | To take J. Smith with first pick?
Sun, 22 Mar 2009 18:38:30 -0700

KFFL has learned the Detroit Lions will take Baylor OT Jason Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

A bit of a surprise here but good decision by Detroit IMO. Question is how will this affect the other teams who need a QB. Will the Rams snag Stafford or will he drop to #4 to Seattle? Or will he drop even further down and a team we don't like (Jets or Bills) will try to trade up to get him?

Sounds like total specualtion No way it comes out a month before te draft a week or 2 maybe not a month

I actually think this Jason Smith kid is going to be a bust.

Great combine, great measurables, looks the part. But I saw him play several times this year and opposing DEs had their way with him.

Not a big surprise-call it mild. Schwartz will bring Titans recipe with him. Tough on the lines. Run tough. Stop the run. Smith is one of 3 players he would nab. I personally would take Aaron Curry simply because he is the safest choice. Reminds me of Keith Bullock-Titans. Just a better pass rusher. If they get Jason Smith signed-They may look at Ziggy Hood at 20.

Keep an eye on a trade between Chiefs and Broncos. Pioli-Mcdaniel may still get to deal. Broncos move up to 3 to select Stafford. Chiefs with several holes acquire more picks the Pat's way. Obviously this means Cutler has been traded. My guess is Cutler to the Jets for rd 1 this year and a 3 next year. Not outrageous.

Thinking one of the top 3 QBs will be there at 20 is optimistic. There are plenty of teams before 20 who could take a QB.

If Detroit doesn't take Stafford at #1 it would be a huge mistake imo. They should have called NE day 1 about Cassel, and drafted a OT #1, but they didn't. Now if they take a OT at #1 they will have Cullpepper starting for them next year which has proven bad last year. The fans deserve better.

I agree with this move obviously if you've seen the mock draft ongoing at the top. ;) I don't believe Stafford is worthy of the #1 overall. I'm not sold on him even being the best QB in this draft. They have too many others holes to think it's gonna be turned around by bringing in a QB now. Chances are good the Lions will be picking in the top 5 again next year and the QB class looks to be MUCH better then.

One QB that I really don't get any feel for is Mark Sanchez. He is considered one of the two best QB'S available in the draft. Why? What N.F.L. passer is he similar to? He is not a big QB. I watched on 4 occasions.I never saw the leadership intangible to rank him this high. I know he had great skill set players and excellent coaching. But when did he take over a game that you knew it was him-and not the defense. He plays soft to me. Am I wrong? Why am I wrong?

To me Sanchez is not only worthy of being in the discussion he IS the best QB in this class. For one he throws the ball under pressure MUCH better than Stafford and you can bet the pressure will only intensify at the next level. Just look at the #s he put up last season.

Detroit should be what the Texans did a few years back and draft Aaron Curry with the #1.

I agree. As soon as Cassel signed his tender, Detroit should've offered us #20 for him. They then could've drafted Jason Smith - or even Monroe - and that would've been as good a first round as they could've asked for.

This is a better pick for Detriot than Stafford.

They can come back at #20 and take an impact defensive player and start to rebuild.
