Pats receive 3 comp picks

You mean a great draft...

I take your point but, just to be contrarian, I'll argue that it only takes one pick to make a great draft (like Round Six, 2000) and that a bunch of lower round picks can still add up to a mediocre draft.

I believe our complete list of picks by round is now:

1: 23
2: 34, 47, 58
3: 89, 97
4: 124
5: 170
6: 199, 207
7: 234

We traded our own 5th for Greg Lewis. Can't trade away the comp picks 97, 170, 207.

That's a nice list - 4 in the top 60, 6 in the top 100, 11 total picks.

Man I'm so pumped for this draft shame we can't trade these ah well :D

It's really nice spacing too. 11 picks is about 4 too many too make the team though..... I see some considerable movement come draft weekend. My guess, and it is just a guess, is a trade into 2010's draft and a package deal trade of picks either up or down on day 1.

Should make for an entertaining weekend!

I agree with using picks to trade up or into next year, but there is nothing wrong with picking 11 players when there is only room for 7. When you pick 7, it is unlikely that all 7 will be winners. Picking 11 lets you pick the best 7 of the litter.

Hate to be a downer, but if the 2007 draft is any indication, they'd be better off bartering those untradeable 5 and 6 rounders for sky miles.:D

New England now has six selections in the top 100. They have their own first-round pick (No. 23 overall). Three second-round selections -- No. 34 (acquired from the Chiefs for Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel), No. 47 (acquired in a trade with the Chargers during the 2008 draft) and their own pick at No. 58. Then they have a pair of third-rounders -- their own pick (No. 89) and the compensatory pick.

#23-#34-#47-#58-#89-#97

Had me confused...you made a typo, I fixed it.

BB has shown he is not scred of moving up a few spots. I think he did so to grap T. Warren. He also moved up to get the infamous WR C.Jackson.

I'd be quite surprised if they moved up to get another #1 unless it's packaging the #34 they got for Cassel. But something tells me (even though I can't produce the proof) that the #31, for example, which is 2nd to last in round 1 is much more expensive than #34, the second pick in round 2. And unless there is a beast there for the taking, I'd be kinda surprised to see BB make that jump on account of the dollar signs.

We'll see in April. Let's sit back on that weekend and enjoy the ride. If they make a crazy Moss-like trade, that would really jumpstart 09 - though I can't see a deal being that lopsided going down again. Even Peppers for a 3rd wouldn't be the steal Moss was... he even came cheap.

Can we fastforward real life ?

I believe the biggest first round move was Graham.

Thanks RayClay, I cut&pasted the top section from Reiss pieces website. Shame on him, huh! But I see what the typo was now too!

Yeah; given the way the roster is now, and how many "1st day" (oldstyle) picks we have, I hope the Pats will be more aggressive trading up (if not out of) the draft instead of giving away rookie FAs for Cleveland, Denver and Kansas City to lap up in September.

My guess is there just weren't any takers for those picks in 2007. I can't imagine that they didn't at least try, since they had almost no chance of making the roster anyways. . . .

Before we talk about trading away draft picks, remember that

the Patriots may lose more than 20 players (10 starters) to free

agency next year. It would be ideal if they could find some

potential replacements this year. They could lose Green, Seymour,

and Wilfork from the defensive line and Kaczur, Mankins, and Neal

from the offensive line.

Agreed. I don't expect any trades to happen unless it's for a high pick next year. Someone who can contribute right away.

Looking at the current roster though we have 65 players and 15 open spots. You figure there are about 5-10 UDFA on top of the 11 draft picks. Maybe there won't be any extra room to sign those UDFA.

I have learned to not get my hopes up for the draft because nearly every year BB pulls a few head scratchers that leaves me unsure how to feel about our draft.

All the experts are saying we made bad moves, yet throw in that caveat that the Patriots have pulled off these kind of bold moves in the past.

Usually, BB is proven right, but at the time immediately following the draft, it can be an unusual feeling of joy, anxiety, and confusion.

But maybe that's just me.

three of those first four picks will turn into starters. one of them may be a pro bowl player. i anticipate great youth upgrade in this draft, which is what we've all been screaming for so long.

kind of a bummer that pioli leaves right at this draft, but whatever. i bet bill deals a few picks. we may have 11 picks, but i wouldn't be surprised to see only 4 or 5 in TC.

yeah i take posts seriously when they say that we could loose 20 players including 10 starters. have we signed anyone through to 2013 yet? holy crap we might not even have a team by then.

Pittsburgh fans have been berserk over this. For future reference, apparently the explanation is included in the secret formula. One of the secrets was the comp for players with 10 or more seasons is capped at a 5th rounder irrespective of the contract they sign or the amount they play or their post season awards... Faneca was in his 12th season.
