He always made a good DE backup in Madden, maybe BB sees his versatility.

Welcome back, Briz. ;)

So is this guy an OL or a DL?

Interesting player. Top 75 recruit in the country coming out of high school. Recently converted to OL from defense. Missed last year with a knee injury. 6-7 330. Dante could make something out of him.

Big, beefy guy from the sounds of it. How's his lateral movement?

re: Patriots sign OL Damane Duckett today(merged ducks)

He's an OL...tackle 6'6"...329...BUT he also has plated on the D line...Hmmmone who can fill in on both sides??? THAT is interesting...maybe in the mix with Britt-O'Callaghan etc.

Patriots sign OL Damane Duckett

The Patriots announced the signing of OL Damane Duckett today.

Duckett is considered a longer shot to make the roster.

A bit from the team's press release:

Duckett, 28, has played in 20 games with one start for the Carolina Panthers (2004), New York Giants (2004-05) and San Francisco 49ers (2006). He was a member of the 49ers practice squad in 2007 and spent the 2008 season on injured reserve with San Francisco. The 6-foot-6-inch, 329-pound offensive lineman was originally signed as a rookie free agent by the Panthers on April 30, 2004. The East Carolina product entered the NFL as a defensive lineman and played in two games for Carolina as a rookie before being waived on Nov. 4, 2004, and signed to the Panthers practice squad on Nov. 6. He was signed to the Giants’ 53-man roster on Dec. 1, and played in the final four games of the 2004 season on the defensive line for New York, recording five tackles and a sack. In 2005, he played in eight games as a reserve defensive tackle for the Giants and made one solo tackle and blocked a field goal. He was released by the Giants on Sept. 2, 2006, and was signed to the 49ers practice squad on Sept. 4. On Sept. 19, 2006, he was signed to the 49ers’ active roster and played in six games at defensive tackle for San Francisco that season, making four tackles (2 solo). In 2007, he switched to the offensive line and spent most of the season on the 49ers practice squad before being signed to the active roster for the season’s final two games, where he was inactive for both contests. Last season, Duckett was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury in August and missed the entire 2008 season.

re: Patriots sign OL Damane Duckett today(merged ducks)

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers OT Damane Duckett may get the chance to compete for playing time next season. The 49ers see his future at right tackle.

Took this from kffl summer 2008.

re: Patriots sign OL Damane Duckett today(merged ducks)

A round 6-7 projection in the 2004 draft. Played entire college career at NG and DT.

He was signed by the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2004.

Spent his first three NFL seasons as a defensive lineman with Carolina, the New York Giants and San Francisco. Was being groomed to play offensive tackle in 2007 as a member of 49ers practice squad. Has yet to have any game snaps on offense.

His Pro Day listing was 6057 300. Is currently listed at 6-6 329.

Side note: Duckett is a perfect example of how accurate NFL Draft Scout's profiles can be (sometimes). He never played offense, yet here was their projection:

His athletic ability, long arms and lack of defensive prowess could see him shift to offensive tackle at the pro level (has the athletic body to make the move).

Re: Patriots sign OL Damane Duckett today(merged ducks)

We can use a DL or two for camp, He does have a shot. He needs us not to draft a DL in the first four rounds and then needs to beat out Adams and perhaps a late draft choice for a roster spot.

Re: Patriots sign OL Damane Duckett today(merged ducks)

Welcome back, Briz. ;)

So is this guy an OL or a DL?

Well I'm sure they'll try him at both.

But his size certainly makes him intriguing for a 3-4 DE. They almost have a blocker's mentality anyways... if he can just plug some gaps :singing:

Re: Patriots sign OL Damane Duckett today(merged ducks)

Damane Duckett = TC fodder. If the OL needs a warm body, he'll go there; if the DL needs a warm body, he'll go there, too. When the first cuts arrive, he'll go to the airport.

No, it wasnt briz that made the madden comments....see my sig :D

Re: Patriots sign OL Damane Duckett today(merged ducks)

He has a cool name. The wordplay possibilities are endless.
Pats have their 'ducks' in a row, Damane signs for cheap 'ducketts', etc. etc.

I haven't seen many DL to OL conversions, my question is can he play guard better than Yates. I know it's probably not humanly possible to play worse, but you never know.

Re: Patriots sign OL Damane Duckett today(merged ducks)

He's really got a shot if he's got any ability at all. BB's favorite - - - versatility. Offense and/or defense, the more you can do - - - the more valuable you are to the team and the better your chance to make the 53.

THAT is true to some extent...Could he be a OT and a DE??? If he could do both BETTER than Britt and close to a LSmith..better than TAdams...then maybe...versatility is great..but one has to have a certain level of skill at those places. I think it's an interesting pickup...and hopefully Dante can really help him in the OL. We shall see what how it all happens.

I have to assume his mobility questions make him an interior lineman, no?
