admittedly i only have been looking at the board from time to time, but it seems Barwin and Matthews are getting most of the love, with Sintim/Cushing/Mauluga.

what's the downside on Larry English? looking at his highlight videos, he looks like the cleanest pass rusher in the class, and definitely a guy Belichick could turn into a Willie Mac clone. why is he such an unpopular binky? bad combine workouts? Poor coverage skills?

honestly i'd rather have this guy at 23 and then pick up a William Moore or maybe even an Andre Smith at 34 than get Peppers. he looks like he could turn into a big time pass rusher.

fwiw, i think barwin is going to be there at 47. maybe even 58.

Shhhhhh, we're saving English in reserve in case NE misses on Barwin, and if they get Barwin, we're going to draft English at #34 to convert back to ILB.

with the talent at DE/OLB in this year's draft i don't see how Barwin is a 1st rounder. i just don't see it. i think he'll go before Sintim and maybe Matthews, but not the rest of the bunch. i think if they're both on the board at that point, you'd go English cause there's less chance he's there at 34 than Barwin.

hasn't belicheck talked about this guy by name before?

With #23 and #34 we don't have to feel the need to take an OLB unless he is THE one we love. In a less deep draft or one without having so many picks we may be more tempted - as it stands, if there's an OL, DL, S, CB or even WR who we love we can just take that BPA and still have some nice OLB choices at #34.

Regarding English, I like him but I wish he were 6'4" instead of 6'2".

Look around here a little bit and there's literally dozens of pages written on the OLB's. The cliffnotes go as follows:

- Box likes Connor Barwin.
- Who's Connor Barwin?
- Box responds.
- Yeah, but what about (insert colloquial player here)?
- Box responds
- Poster converted to Barwin binky.
(repeat 400x)

- Moderatrix likes Barwin
- Eviscerates with Ginsu precision any dissenting opinions

- What about English?
- He can play
- Good motor guy
- Some dissent
- Respectful disagrement (rare!!!)
- Consensus good pickup with inside potential

- MayoClinic likes Ayers
- Mayoclinic knows more than most of us, so accepted.
- After further research, Ayers looks like he could make the conversion

-Sintim is a good fit
- Meh
- Yeah, but low ceiling
- Can play inside
- Consensus safe pick, inside potential

- Combine comes
- OMFG look what Barwin did!
- Meh, look what the other guys did.
- Clay Matthews' Dad played for Belichick
- Barwin begins asencion to board binky

-People now oddly like Matthews
- Side banter
- Side banter
- Rey Maualuga has the IQ of a sea cucumber
- PatsTrojans55 is emotionally frail.
- We're over Matthews

-Consensus dislike of Maybin.

-Consensus doubt of Brown

-Consensus that Orakpo will not be available.

- Barwin pro day
-Continued improvement
- Work ethic displayed
- Ability to excel at challenges shown
- Consensus 1st round grade placed.

- Barwin now recognized as 1st rounder.
- If we go OLB in round 1, where do we go?
- Ultimately, it's all a gamble
- Barwin is less experienced, but moot considering NFL correlations
- Highest ceiling available
- Not a single valid question mark or flag

- Barwin becomes consensus acceptable #23 pick, if we go OLB.

- English, Sintim become options at #34, both with inside potential.

I still believe that English is the correct value rusher if that is what the Patriots want-is pure energy off the edge. Mathews is more versatile-but English reminds me of Dwight Freeney. Great hustle-explosion-natural ability to dip shoulder and drive around the blockers. At 23- if Pats do not get Peppers or J.Taylor. He has a mean streak in him.

English certainly has his fans around here...check out these threads:

Note that I compared him to Woodley a month before Mayock did. :snob:

I like English a lot, but he's not especially long nor fast (especially on the 10-yard split, which is worrisome). And his position drills did nothing to reassure me about his ability to play in space. So he doesn't hit binky territory for me.

The cliffnotes go as follows:

It was just like being there! :D

And that didn't tingle your spidey senses?

Belichick mentioned him at the combine. In his little press conference. So, you can
scratch him from the list.

hahaha thank you. epic.

don't get me wrong i love Barwin's versatility and what he's doing in workouts but to the layperson's youtube eyes, larry english looks like a monster off the edge. i don't know what the cones are saying, but he looks fast, even if it is a low tier school. Barwin at 23, huh? i will be shocked, but i'm not looking to get evicerated. i'll peruse those threads, thanks.

Well this thread went downhill fast :(

 Very nice. Though I object to the "Mayoclinic knows more than most of us" part - I just bludgeon you all with so much information and argument that it's easier to submit than to continue resisting. :D Also, you deserve a place somewhere on the cliffnotes as well.

There's nothing wrong with English at all. Nice prospect. I'm not sure he has the athleticism to excel at 3-4 OLB for us, but he would probably be solid. I prefer some other players, particularly at 23, but English is definitely on the short list.

Great post!

I agree great post keep them coming as we need to have this to keep us going thought until the draft.:p:p

Lamar Woodly = Larry English

I know I am going to get some heat on this one but in all seriousness I think BB is going to take the best player at #23 and take more risks in the second round.
