do you guys think the Pats still see Sanders as a starter or will look to replace him in this draft. I persoanlly think BB's plans are for merriwether and Sanders to be the starters, but wouldnt mind if they attempt to upgrade this draft.

I don't think BB plans on starting rookies if they come in and win the job than fine....so I would say yes he is the starter but the past few years they have used 3 guys to fill the two safety spots and I wouldn't rule out more of that if that is Tank, a rookie, or even Rodney.

Agreed. remember, Meriweather didn't play all that much until late into his rookie year. My guess is we'll draft a safety at some point (doesn't have to be day one), and let Sanders start with the rookie/Tank/other filling in where needed. By year's end, if the rookie shows improvement, he'll gradually get more time.

I think BB is happy with Sanders/Merriweather as our safeties, hence the three year contract and $2.25m signing bonus (estimated). I think if we draft safety, it's on day two, unless Delmas or Smith drop to the end of the second round.

D.W. Annoys in 3...2...1...

You do not sign a guy for 3 years so you think he needs to be replaced .He was paid 9 million and if he plays good he is will get some more money. that is alot money to pay a backup who you are going to replace and sit after paying him bonus money,

BB says sanders is the play caller in the backfield and is confortable with him their. also he is 225 lbs and is bigger and hitter which matches well with merriweather who is 195 lb and fast. strong safety and free safety. We use alot of 3 safety package when tank / lb / harrison can play the spl packages.

They didn't re-sign him and pay him some decent money to sit on the bench and have another guy take his place - He will be seen frequently at safety in 2009 barring injury.

Yup. 2011 is right inline with Meriweather's contract. Baring any changes they'll be starting together for the next 3 years.

Also don't forget Springs can play safety. Personally I consider him the #3 safety, and Tank as the #4.

Sanders may be 225 but big hitter?? I seriously cannot remember the guy making one big hit ever. I was hoping we'd sign him for short money ( as a starter but draft a day1 safety to compete ) but with the contract he signed its seems BB is happy with him. Sanders is ok, I just think we need more playmaking abilities from that position ( BM is coming along nicely )

On last years team I'd have to rank Sanders the 2nd or 3rd worst of our starters on defense.

1. Vince
2. Seymour
3. Mayo
4. Adalius
5. Ty Warren
6. Vrable
7. Hobbs
8. Meriweather
9. Bruschi
10. SANDERS
11. Delta!

After FA I'd now rank him our worst starter on D (assuming we replace Vrable with someone good.)

I got nothing yet again!.......... Is this a trick? Is Simon involved in some way?

I have not read anywhere, ever, that lil' Jimmy is 225. He's closer - maybe much closer - to 205 than 225. And Meriweather's taller than he is, too. Lil' Jimmy a big hitter? Please. He & Stomper comprise one of the least-feared Safety tandems in football.

The FO should've used the money wasted on Sanders on a real SS instead - like Sean Jones.

I don't get it??

I don't hate Sanders, I think he is a servicable starter, I just think he is one of the weakest starters on our D.

Meriweather will be a pro-bowler soon enough. He played really well last season despite being surrounded by a failing secondary.

Sanders biggest liability is lack of speed if you ask me

He simply does not respond fast enough to certain situations but still he was paid to be the starter this season.

If Sanders was a bit quicker in helping out Harrison against Tyree in SB we would probably have 4 SB trophys by now

SeauOUCH - You'll have to forgive DW Toys. You see, he has a personal hatred of James Sanders. For the Pats 3 years, all Toys has done is rant and rave about how bad Sanders is. And it hasn't mattered what facts you put out there to the contrary, Toys insists that Sanders flat out sucks.

Even when pointing out that, prior to the start of 2007, BB made it a point to tell people that the Pats were in an enviable position of having 3 starting caliber safeties, Toys has ranted and raved to the contrary.

DW Toys has taken to calling me Simon, after Simon Cowell. Because I am typically one of the people who just thrashes Toys with the truth while he sits there and tries to spin things.

One of the ways you know a person is totally out of touch is that Box_O_Rocks has actually started in on him of late. Because Toys continues to beat the same drum and hasn't changed his tune.

If Samuel hadn't been beaten by Tyree twice and hadn't dropped that interception, we'd have 4 SB Trophies by now.

Maybe you ought to send in your resume to the Patriots -- they might appreciate your player evaluation abilities considering they just re-upped Sanders for three years.

Jones, OTOH, didn't seem to garner much interest at all and was only signed for a 1 year deal for similar money with the Eagles.

But I'm sure you're right, if only we had signed a REAL SS

And people need to realize that this is isn't Madden. The Giants SB team had Gibril Wilson and James Butler as their starting safeties. Of course this subject to the vagaries of the draft, but if you ask me, investing in OLB/ILB/OT is much more important than replacing someone who is a solid, if unspectacular starter.

Meriweather should be higher on the list and Sanders was better than Bruschi.

Adalius only played in nine games last year.

Holy cow.

Harrison was in perfect position to make that play. It was a fluke catch; now if only Sanders had strapped on his jetpack and flown over the top...

Unreal.
