Bill Belichick, speaking on WEEI in Boston, said he never received an offer for a first- and third-round pick for Matt Cassel.

"They never made that offer to me," Belichick said, indicating there were no official late offers in the Cassel dealing. Without getting too specific, Belichick said he was in contact with multiple teams after Cassel signed his franchise tender and he took the best offer he got. He also indicated that the complexities of a three-way trade (presumably including Jay Cutler) could have taken a long time to play out, largely because it would have been contingent on new contracts. Reading between the lines, it seemed like the Patriots didn't have a firm offer or the patience to wait for one because they needed cap relief.

Likely no formal offer, and as he stated it would be complicated if the three-way deal was an option. I suspect there were some discussions about such a deal, but no formal proposition. The deal with KC had to be done when it was done so that the Pats could move forward with free agency.

Ditto. Belichick is lying about not receiving a better offer to conceal his inferior deal with Pioli? To what end? Where's the precedent with Belichick? All good conspiracy theories need at least a few data points, or the call goes out to don the tin foil helmets.

I never thought BB would turn down a #1 pick instead of a 2 because it costs more to sign that pick. That never made sense to me.
In BB we trust.

I sure as heck believe this over the notion of us passing up a 1 and a 3 out of favor. At the most, give Pioli a chance to match it.

Maybe most GMs still question whether Cassel can do anything near what he did in a system that doesn't have Randy Moss and Wes Welker... i.e. they think he may look more like the guy in pre-season than the guy at the end of the season.

I still find that tough to believe as I'd have to say Cassel showed a lot of poise and leadership making BIG throws when it counted most - but the fact that Pioli seems willing to take a wait and see on a long term contract suggests that he too may have some doubts.

Yes, let's IGNORE BB's all too rational explanation that stuff like 3 way deals take time, that contracts take time to get signed and that there are lots of parties, lots of contingencies and lots of RISK that any small issue blows the deal. It's obvious that the tin hat crowd here has never done business deals. I do admit to inexperience in negotiating complex N way deals.
