Pats1 noticed that Mayo's salaries are now listed as:
2009 - $500,000
2010 - $550,000
2011 - $700,000
2012 - $850,000

I believe that in return for lowering his salaries by $9.1 million Mayo was given a $9,100,000 option bonus. I am also presuming that option bonus was prorated over 4 years. I think that his cap numbers are as follows:

2009 - $2,770,000
2010 - $2,825,000
2011 - $2,970,000
2012 - $3,125,000

Please note that all option bonuses are prorated.

Wait a minute. . . . how would they be able to do that? Isn't there a rule that rookie contracts can't be re-negotiated for two years?

I have an accounting question about something like that.

yeah, he's helping the team, but wouldn't 9m in bonus today be worth substantially more than 9m in salary spread over 4 yrs?
it would seem like the team could get by offering him a 7m option bonus.

It could be that the Pats had an option clause in the deal and chose to exercise that option.

What ever he is getting paid he is worth it,bro.

Could it have been an escalator for being DROY?

Odd. A $500K salary plus the pro-rated part of the $9 mil bonus actually increases his cap hit for this year. Why would they do something like this?

What is the advantage for the Patriots of doing something like this?

If it is an option, what do we get by exercising it?

Is there any possibility that Mayo's deal was actually 6 years (once the option is exercised) but his agent wanted to hide his willingness to agree to a six year deal? (But then his 2013 salary would already appear, wouldn't it :()

If they don't plan on making any more moves, moving money forward helps in future years....but that would only be relevant if the CBA gets renegotiated.

Maybe Mayo asked BB if he could get it now so he could pay off his truck ;)

Could it have been an escalator for being DROY?

I doubt it since I had his prior salaries in my workbook before the 2008 season began.

They have done the same thing in the past with Mankins, Wilfork and Watson,

Perhaps I misspoke. Could a significant amount of his salary become guaranteed due to him winning DROY?

That's possible.

FWIW - In the past when the Patriots picked up a player's option the future salaries that had been guaranteed became unguaranteed.
