If it comes down to an OLB, who would we choose.

English, when i see someone has gone from 166 LB's to 240 in a couple of years it raises a red flag for me. I've also read that English is a natural pass rusher that could be converted to a olb in a 3-4. At least i think i did.

I saw his highlight video on youtube, and man, I don't think there is a better looking pass rusher in this year's draft.

I agree with you on Mathew's, the only thing I don't like about English's game is that they seemed to flare him out wide allot almost in the slot. Mostly because they're trying to dictate a one on one whether the
o has help on that side or not. I would prefer a guy who can be balanced at the line of scrimmage and split. They just really liked lining him up way outside for whatever reason.

I just read up on him on Mayocks top 20 and thats what he says. He's a great pass rusher of the edge, with so much speed hes to fast for many lineman to handle. And teams playing the 3-4 should be giving him a good look.

Matthews and I'll tell you why. I think that Matthews would be able to play ILB also and may be the Tedy replacement of the future.

He certainly can play OLB but maybe we can get an OLB in the 2nd and move him to ILB.

Would be nice to get an ILB who can play outside also. and then get a pure rusher like English. I have heard people compare him to Demarcus Ware, Terrel Suggs. Pretty good company.

Matthews reminds me of Bobby Carpenter from Ohio st.. Dallas could'nt find a place for him, he did'nt really work inside and was'nt abrupt enough outside.

English could easily transition to OLB. We have AD to teach him!!

I'm still concerned about his wgt. It doesn't seem normal too gain that much wgt. in a couple of years.

FWIW, English can play inside as well. He has the hands, the suddeness, the hips and the footwork to move inside. He's a very, very violent individual on the field.

I don't really "get" the Matthews love affair. He put up big numbers in the combine and I very recently got my hands on some stuff from USC's season. Matthews is really, really underwhelming. Sure he's fast, but then again he does play at USC. When I watched Matthews play, I saw a guy who plays like a bully. I don't mean this is in the colloquial sports reporter vernacular, I mean it in football vernacular. When I see Matthews play, I see a guy who hits his hardest and celebrates the loudest when he gets a guy blindside, when he hammers a QB after taking 7 steps on a stunt through the b gap. Then, when you don't see Matthews, he is playing against a tough, hardnosed player that is going to make him earn everything. To me, he seems like a guy who puts up incredible numbers but just doesn't take it to the football field.

I think Larry English is the second coming of Willie McGuinest. He's my favorite player in the draft this year.

Neither. Both are well down on my list of potential 3-4 OLBs. I'll take Connor Barwin, Robert Ayers, Michael Johnson or Aaron Maybin over both of them.

Seriously, Michael Johnson.... That guy plays too high, Ayers is a definite and Maybin also because he's young and an instant leader. Connor Barwin before Matthews but after English... IMO

the question was who would we choose, and by we, I thought you meant BB. I see him taking Matthews because of the connection with his father and the versatility. I don't see English dropping back and covering zone areas well.

As far as weight gain, I went from 185 to 235 in two years. Of course, I was slow as all hell, but that was 20 years ago, so I figure training has improved. Not saying there's no concern there, just pointing out it's possible. He is 6'3".

Of course, when all's said and done, BB's getting an OL. Or a punter. :singing:

what do we need more a pass rusher or a guy who can cover? I'd say the answer is obvious.

Let's chill for a minute on the Maybin talk. Think about it guys, he's a one trick pony with good initial burst and not much else. Where's his moves, where's his ability to loop and stunt, where's his hand technique? Most of all, he will get ahniliated trying to set the edge in the NFL. Absolutely ahniliated. The Patriots OLB's NEED to be competent in setting the perimeter in order to play effectively in the scheme. It's a gap controll defense, not a chase and flow defense. Saying Maybin would be a good fit as a Patriot OLB is like saying Ernie Simms would be a good fit as a SILB.

Yet many times I've been told how much BB liked Simms and would have drafted him for ILB...

Quoted for truth, yes yes:agree::ditto::yeahthat:
