Pats reportedly working out Pat White

I would. He represents versatility and gives BB multiple options.

His accomplishments speak for themselves. I love this kids attitude can't say I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Patriots jersey for the right pick/value.

What do you think the "right pick/value" would be? 58? 89?

If he's the guy you want. You move..."65-70."

Sounds about right. NFLDraftscout has him in the 2-3 range. Even if he came in and caught a few passes (and threw a few others), he might provide enough of a distraction for opposing D's to make a difference.

I wonder, though: might it be better to get a playmaker/receiver/return guy at that stage?

Well he could go as early as Mid 2nd but realistically if we could acquire him for a early 3rd I think it would be great value pick.

At 6-0, this guy may be seen as jack-of-all trades but master of none. Seems hard to believe that Pats would use a mid pick for a "project". Then again, Drew Brees is 6-0

Interesting. Not someone I would have considered for the Pats.

Anyone who can fill multiple roster spots is of value to the Pats, IMO. I think it was Dryheat in another thread who said getting a guy like White who could contribute in other ways while being a #3QB option would be ideal.

The earliest I'd take him would be the Samuel Comp pick. If that's too late and somebody else grabs him...oh well.

I'd consider him, because in addition to his open-field skills, you'd save a roster spot by cutting Gutierrez. If he proves good enough to make the game day roster as a WR or returner, it also saves a PS slot for a non-QB.

I don't know much about White, but they tried to make Troy Brown the emergency QB at one point, so I wouldn't put it past them.

Don't the Pats typically work out players they expect to be drafted by other teams to get a jump on scouting them?

I love Pat White, and it was me who said we need to go get him... however I think he fits perfectly for Houston - reuniting him with Slaton which combined in college for the most lethal rushing attack in the nation, plus Houston doesn't have a solid answer at QB giving him a chance.

Pat White had his Pro-day a few days ago, and every scout expected him to run routes, to which he refused, which left some scouts upset.

It appears Pat White wants to become a QB in the NFL or atleast be given a chance. I think Pat White could be a great back up + slash player with the Pats, and give him 3 years to bulk up to be a solid Pro...

I simply don't think unless he wants to do whatever it takes to get on the field, he won't do much for the Pats since Brady is far away from retirement... Unless the pats feel one of their 2 younger backups are dropped for a Pat White.

I feel however that this is more pre-scouting in case the dolphins draft him and utilize him in the wildcat offense.

Exactly, and given Cassel's level of success in this offense, and given that the team went with O'Connell as the primary to backup to Cassel throughout the season once Brady went down, and also given how quickly they jettisoned the franchised Cassel, I would bet the team is pretty confident O'Connell could QB this team to victories in Brady's place. Meaning the need for a #3 QB is lessened.

Agreed. Yes he has all sorts of skills and is hyped up, but if you do not have a definitive plan in place on how to use this guy it will be a waste of a draft pick.

I thought this was a joke, until I read this ...

I don't claim to have any inner knowledge of the Patriots scouting or operations, but I would be willing to be my entire life savings that they are not working out Pat White as some sort of hyper-advanced scouting. It defies every logical & efficient sensibility known to man. You don't squander one of your finite number of college visits to scout a guy that might be drafted by someone in your division; you visit with guys that you might draft to help your team.

As far as this, I had read that it was his coach (who controls WVU's pro day) that informed scouts that White would only be throwing. Not sure why he did it, I assume to give White a better shot to be viewed as a pure QB, but it was not White's choice/decision.

I'd actually love for them to draft him, just for potential kick return abilities alone. However, it seems like BB has really never drafted/developed that sort of slash QB/WR prototype, so I'm not sure he'll start now. Blame Michael Bishop?

My understanding--and I admit I could be wrong here--is that the limit was on bringing players to Foxboro, not on going out to visit players.

Regardless, I think the point was that you can't work out every player that you think your opponents might draft even if you have no interest in him. That would be a colossal waste of time. You don't have to work out Pat White to plan how to stop the "Wildcat". First of all, defending the Wildcat with Pat White running it would be no different than preparing to play Michael Vick back in the day, or any other running QB. Secondly there's nothing you're going to learn about Pat White's ability to run the "Wildcat" that isn't on four years of film. It's not like you can bring him in and run an 11-on-11 scrimmage.

Yep, but I think the point still holds. I can't imagine the Pats putting a coach on a plane to do a comprehensive private workout with a prospect for the sole purpose of advance scouting him as an opponent -- with no idea what team he'll end up on, or even what position he'll play for that team! This seems like an extreme relation of the "oh, they're bringing X in for a visit, cross him off your list" myth.

That is about where I have him as well. It is almost like he represents value if he falls to us there.

I really read that about 3 years ago when the Pats brought in some QB or some player that depth wise they had no reason to scout them... and I read or heard BB saying that sometimes they need to evaluate them to see where other teams feel they will be at to help them slot them on their draft board, and as an advanced scouting...

Ehhh I could be wrong...
But knowing the genius of this organization I would not put it past them to do advanced scouting for potential game breaking players...
