This catches most observers by surprise.

Smith, who was never a player, is almost certainly the least polarizing of the remaining candidates.

The way I figure it, a less polarizing diretor means a stronger, more unified union.

A stronger union is more capable of accepting a CBA which the union leadership thinks is a good idea, but which looks bad to the players and agents. A weaker union might have had to reject such a deal, due to internal political considerations.

That significantly increases the chances that a CBA gets done sooner rather than later. I'm still betting on an uncapped 2010, but I'm more willing to entertain the possibility of a deal before then.

boo hoo. lets hope he can be active in preventing the league from going into 010 uncapped

About ****'in time they elected somebody. Now the let the games begin, and a little baptism by fire. 46 weeks to get something worked out.

Surprised, to say the least.

Troy Vincent was supposed to be the lead candidate and Trace Armstrong was a top three candidate. Obviously Vincent's partnership with a financial advisory company was a huge issues, coupled with the fear that his relationship with his former agent would lead to unfair practices. Armstrong must not had wanted to give up his representation of NFL coaches. The commission must be too good to pass up.

True to the matter you cant tell until it all shakes loose who gets the wet leg and who gets the butter biscuit. Bit of a surprise I would say thought it was Troys to lose. Egg grating in the back turned around that outcome. Or maybe Im just cynical.

Good news it was not Troy Vincent, if it was him, we were going to have a lockout ...

Bad news, his politcal ties, hopefully he has some negotiating experience..

Huh?:confused2:

If you dont agree dont hate

First off. the HUH? wasnt't that they disagreed. They didn't understand your innuendo and metaphors since they were smashed together.

Secondly, they weren't hating on you.

I just stated my surprise it wasnt Troy Vincent because he was the name you always heard.

If you'd followed the NFLPA situation at all, you'd find that it wasn't just Troy Vincent's name that you heard. You also heard that of Trace Armstrong, David Cornwell, Mike Kenn, and John Spagnola.

In fact, most of what I read had it that Vincent was the least likely choice because of his prominent name.

Just got an email from a friend/co-worker who grew up 3 doors down from Smith, and has known him her whole life. Small world. Says he's a GREAT guy.

There are many that say that about Goodell...NOT disputing that he may NOT be...but this is negotiating and..there are some interesting things here...I find it interesting that someone who has represented corporations for a long time is now all of a sudden representing a "union". He has political ties..and such..but football??? More of an outsider...and now preparing for "war" as he said today... Wonderful. him and Goodell need to actually get off thei backsides and do something..and I am NOT at allholding my breath...neither to me is impressive at all..Goodell is an idiot way over his head..the CBA does not get renewed and..the golden goose might be dead..I really trust little of getting things done with these amateurs...Tags and Upshaw at least KNEW what was really on the lines..these guys are clueless......

Unless the players are proactive with concessions - and I don't think that will happen - we're on a path where the current CBA will stand until the agreement expires and the owners potentially lock them out... meaning there WOULD be an uncapped year.

Frankly I don't think the players would feel that's a bad thing - but who really know what will happen.
