I agree, great price for player that knows the system and contributes on mulitiple levels.

Given Haynesworth's contract setting the bar for elite D-Linemen, this signing gives the Pats maybe a bit more leaverage in negotiating with Vince and/or Seymour (as in, nobody's irreplaceable.)

Anything more than the Vet minimum is way too much in my opinion. This guy is absolute garbage. I have no idea why anybody cared if we resigned him, and why anybody is happy he is getting almost $2mil/yr. Good for depth??? He gets no pressure on the qb, and when he has to play for more than a few plays, teams run right at him with great success. I can't even give this guy the title of JAG. He is well below that.

This is ridiculous. They are paying way too much for this guy. He didn't even have 18 sacks last season. When are teams like the Patriots going to finally get the hang of the salary cap?

Bring back Bobby Grier!

Do you really think Mike Wright is good value at $2mil/yr? What has he done to make think that? I'm just very nervous about our D going into this season. I get tired of the argument, "he knows our system", when it seems the D is becoming more and more void of playmakers, and we continue to resign guys that have done nothing (Sanders, Wright, Alexander). In watching every Pats game for as long as I can remember, it is becoming painfully obvious the D is lacking players that win one on one battles. What good is it when a player "knows the system", but can't beat the guy in front of him?

Before you get to questions like this, break down the salary cap.

1.) How much is the cap this season? Remember to include the "penalty".

2.) How much does the team feel it needs to keep free for mid-season replacements?

3.) How many players with "big" numbers will either be let go or will restructure?

4.) Now, how much does that leave?

5.) Divide that by 53

6.) You now have what should be the average salary.

Feel free to go from there, but you're going to find that a $2 million dollar salary is below team average this year.

Teams need backups. Wright has started at all the DL positions, and is OK at all of them. His cap hit will be about $1.4M. Given the contract situations with Wilfork, Seymour and Green, this signing is really a no-brainer. He replaces Titus Adams on the roster and cost us $1M more of 2009 cap money.

If we didn't re-sign Wirght, we'd be looking to draft a DE. Such a player would be unlikely to be much use in 2009, and MAYBE could equal Wright in 2010.

You're entitled to your opinion, but in my opinion, your evaluation of Wright is absolute garbage.

I completely understand your point, but my point is guys like Mike Wright shouldn't just be paid slightly below the team avg. If there ever was a guy that should be paid Vet Min, he seems like the guy. I'll ask again, what has he done to make you think he should paid any more than the Vet Min.

Like I said earlier, my worry is the Pats are becoming more and more void of playmakers. I just think overpaying for guys like that is hurting this D. As last year went on, I found myself literally expecting teams to convert on 3rd and long situations. That should never be the case. In my opinion, the reason for this is the lack of playmakers on D (particularly at OLB). I think overpaying for guys at the bottom of your roster can be just as detrimental as overpaying guys at the top. It seems the Pats are sacrificing top level talent on D for depth, and it really shows.

Like I asked before, what has he done to make you think differently?

Ok, so your point is just wrong, then.

Thanks, got it.

Good signing.
Now if we could extend Big Vince.

If you have watched Patriots games for as long as you can remember, and you think our D is totally void of playmakers, you must be eleven years old. Because you obviously do not remember anything before 2001.

Either that, or you watch games without comprehension except to compare to fantasy football. No stats = worthless player, end of story, eh?

Of all the years a Patriot can could go into the season feeling good about the team, this has to be the best ever, with the possible exception of 2004. Even going into the 2007 season, people were unsure of how Moss would be.

Try imagining yourself a fan of any other team in the NFL and look at what they need to get in the draft compared to what the Patriots need, and see how it feels.

We are friggin's stacked this year.

We went 11-5 last year without Brady on offense or Adalius on defense and Mayo a rookie and about 5 CBs on IR. This year we have Brady back, and have added Springs and Bodden to the secondary. How can anyone feel bad about our chances?

One last time, what has he done to make anyone think he should be paid anything more than Vet Min?

You mean besides the painfully obvious that is "Impress Bill Belichick enough to give more than a vet min salary"?

:woohoo: Welcome back Mike!

In BB We Trust

Well, enough to give him the benefit of the doubt, anyway. I love people arguing about something as essentially irrelevant as giving Wright a contract over minimum. It means that the team doesn't really have many other major issues that need to be focused on.

Good value for the money. A field proven sub capable of playing for any DL position in time of need. Removes any panic pressure to draft a DL. And reduces the risk of picking a kid who either can't play or needs a couple seasons to develop.

Now BB can again take the best player available at the draft slot. Better yet, he can use all his picks to move up and target a guy or 2 he really covets. If the draft talent really is that deep, he can just sit and take what options are left.
