when do you think it would be?

Before the draft?
Right after the draft?
June or latter?

my guess is it won't be until after June because of the family thing.
if it happens at all.

But are the PATs taking a risk waiting that long?
What if he changes his mind and PAT's lose out on other FA's
because they waited for JT?

Re: If Jason Taylor signs with Pats...

I would say some time around the draft ideally just before but maybe just after....I know he wants to do the family thing but if he wants some choice in where he goes he shouldn't wait forever.

Re: If Jason Taylor signs with Pats...

My guess is they wouldn't be counting on him to start if he wasn't going to officially sign until June. They would have other options they'd feel comfortable with in that case, meaning one of the following:

- They rate Woods, Crable, Redd, and TBC higher than we think.

- They have a few targets in the draft they're confident they can get and will contribute right away.

Edit: Also, I looked at this quick and thought it said Pats sign Jason Taylor. Had a bit of a jolt there...

Taylor would want to sign and report the day before training

camp begins or later.

I'd say it would be right before the draft. He could then have a clause in there regarding when he has to show up, etc.

Re: If Jason Taylor signs with Pats...

Send him the playbook and tell him that they can work out an official signing day any time before training camp.

I would assume that he would want to sign as late as possible too. Belichick may not want to wait that long though.

I think there's a 'relationships' thing in the NFL. Were JT to agree to sign to mutually agreeable financial terms, bu postpone the contract execution to say just before TC started, I believe that BB would take him at his word and do it.

I don't know if it is solely because he wouldn't want to be left holding the bag if Taylor signed elsewhere right before camp. I think Belichick has to a little concerned about Taylor's dedication to the game and would want him working out with the team. Taylor did have a down year last year and it probably had a lot to do with him doing Dancing with the Stars (it may have even played a factor in him injuring himself.

My theory - They already have a deal in place and it will be announced after the draft.

My other Theory - If they work a Peppers deal, JT is going dancing with the stars (Cowboys).

It's just way to quiet on BOTH of those guys deals for next year - Peppers is carrying $17 Million into next year guaranteed and I'm sorry but ain't nobody but a top flight QB worth that kinda cash and Carolina knows that, so they HAVE to be working to unload that money and with it going dark on all things Peppers, it sounds like NE might be in play.

Same goes for JT - Too quiet and only one team does quiet that good, our team.

Taylor is on the old side of the hill
BB cut slack to (I'm blocked on the name) the old OLB he had in 2001 and let him miss off season. He's done it before.

I believe you're talking about Roman Phifer. But yes, BB has shown a willingness in the past to allow vet players who are established pros who he knows he can trust to stay away and work out on their own.

That's one of the benefits of an established & confident coach. They don't have to run around like Zorn or McDaniels saying & doing things to "let everyone know they are in charge."

Re: If Jason Taylor signs with Pats...

He will probably sign in June because he may be contemplating on whether to play or retire. However, whether or not he signs shouldn't affect the Pats draft plans.

He won't sign with the Pats. This guy does not care about winning and will not take a discount to "play for a ring." If they spend big $, it will be on Peppers.

Re: If Jason Taylor signs with Pats...

1) I don't think Jason Taylor is coming. He wants to practice and play near home. To put it another way, he wants to be as close to home as possible as often as possible. He understands the mistake he made. He may be willing to eat crow and mend fences with Miami. Also, there are a couple of other Florida teams.

2) If the patriots were willing to agree to special practice conditions and timing for Taylor, then the deal would be signed before the draft. Why not? The patriots have to have a contract in hand, or not, to help them with their draft strategy. And there is no reason to have to resort to handshakes. There is no advantage to not signing, unless the parties want to re-assess based on what happens in our draft or the draft of others.

3) Is Taylor worth special handling and a set of rules different than everyone else, on top of a $5M cap hit (my guess). Perhaps, perhaps not.

BOTTOM LINE
It is in the best interest of Jason Taylor to stay in Florida. I think one of the three Florida teams will make it worth it for Taylor to play in Florida (even Alanta or Charlotte are short plane rides, especially on a private jet).

Re: If Jason Taylor signs with Pats...

damn, I read the title of this thread really quickly and overlooked the 'if'

hopefully this signing does happen soon

If Taylor wants a ring, staying in Florida is a waste of his time.

Re: If Jason Taylor signs with Pats...

Choosing between the higher probability of a ring and family is an easy choice for Jason Taylor.

It is also an easy choice for other players.

You must talk to different players than I have, in all the major sports.
