For a second year safety who had 4 INTs last year and 2 sacks it seems like Merriweather does not get enough credit for the potential playmaker he can be for us.

He's going to have a breakout year this year, mark my words.

I could see him in the Pro Bowl this year. He improved his hands last season, If they continue to improve he could be a 7 pick guy.

I think he's a solid player whos has improved every year. He seems to miss a couples of tackles in some games, but he's usually a pretty good hitter. I think he's a keeper.

Re: Does Merriweather not get enough credit?

He could be a major playmaker, and progressed incredibly well from 1st to 2nd yr

Re: Does Merriweather not get enough credit?

I still think Meriweather had too many breakdowns in coverage to say he didn't get enough credit. He definitely progressed from his rookie season, but he was still a liability at times (most notably the 3rd and 15 in overtime against the Jets where he was positioned too deep in covering Dustin Keller). Meriweather still needs some polishing.

It seems like a LB was suppose to be covering the TE on that play. I could be wrong though.

Hard to say, it could have been. I agree that Meriweather still has some work to do, but I really think he's going to be a good one. If he makes a similar progression from year 2 to 3 as he did from 1 to 2 (or even the beginning of 1 to the end of 1), I think it's going to be a BIG boost to this secondary.

Re: Does Merriweather not get enough credit?

I think he'll have a good year too. I mean he did some good plays for us last year. I think he has developed in 1 of our best safeties out there. Its all about building confidence and trust with the coaches. Plus with our CB's now improved he should be dangerous back there this year!

Either way, Meriweather screwed up because he didn't seem to know where the marker was and had an opportunity to bring down Keller before he reached the first down marker and failed.

Personally, it looked like it was Meriweather's responsibility based on where Keller caught the ball, but it may not be him. I know Hobbs has gotten a lot of crap on this board for passes he didn't give up because he ended up being the first guy to the receiver after he catches the ball. So this could be the same case for Meriweather.

I believe, from hearing both Vrabel and Belichick about that play, that the screw up was on one of the rookie LBs.

Re: Does Merriweather not get enough credit?

Guyton blew his assignment on the play. In a third and 15 it's obvious Merriweather would be positioned deeper in the field.

Re: Does Merriweather not get enough credit?

I think most if not all saw the flashes down the stretch that show his potential to be a playmaker.

I also think you don't give a guy credit for potential to be a playmaker but rather for production proving that he is one. In other words, I wouldn't say he isn't getting enough credit.

Actually I thought it was Mayo.....Merriweather met him about a yard or two short of the first but Keller fell forward tough to blame him he seemed to have a deep responsibility and came up to help after it was thrown. Mayo on the other hand seemed to drop back the wrong way (away from Keller) leaving a vacancy....(he could have done the right thing but it certainly looked bad in the replays).

My point was that Meriweather had a chance to stop Keller before the sticks, but seemed to lose track on where it was and allowed him to get over the first down marker. Without know the responsibilities, I don't know if he blew the coverage or Mayo did. In a zone, Mayo's zone may have ended and Meriweather's zone picked up on Keller's route. Or Mayo got burnt.

Re: Does Merriweather not get enough credit?

I think he still has a lot to do before he's a playmaker. He doesn't make all the tackles and he has slip ups in coverage. However, he has progressed about normal what you'd expect a 1st rounder to, so yes I'm happy with him, but I hope he continues to improve, which I see no reason barring any injuries he'll do anything but go forward.

Man, now if only we could get a beast at SS playing by him. This secondary would be stoooooooooopid good.

Co-sign. It was Mayo or Guyton who screwed up that play.

Re: Does Merriweather not get enough credit?

Both Mayo and Guyton screwed up in the play . Both ended up in the same zone and one was suppose to be in the zone keller ran through.

I do not know think you can blame merriweather for leading a forward momemtum of a guy who is around 250 LB running moving him backwards after a hit. Merriweather is 190 lb or something like that. the physics does not allow such things to happen .

merriweather is improving his worst moment is the SB TD. when the cb hobbs jumps the slant it usually assume the safety over the top is giving coverage. merriweather if you notice is running at the back of field trying to get plaxico but never does.

Are you sure about this? While I'd rather get shot in the face than have to watch that play and break it down, I do believe reading/hearing from either a Pats defender or Pats coach that basically the play was designed as an all out blitz and Hobbs was going to be left on an island w/o safety help. Just b/c Meriweather was going over to help doesn't mean he was supposed to be there sooner or was late to help.

I think the play was designed to leave Hobbs out there, Hobbs cut off the slant, the blitz just didn't get there before Manning could throw it up. Risky play call is all.

This was it, as I recall. I believe I posted a link about it, although my memory could be wrong.
