Mike Wright is probably the Patriots' most noteworthy remaining free agent. Wright, who had a career-high 2 1/2 sacks last season and was credited with 33 tackles, according to coaches' calculations, could end up returning to the Patriots. A league source said Wright, who has visited with Arizona and been contacted by other teams, is in discussions with the Patriots

Mike is the last Patriot free agent worth re-signing.

Mike is the last Patriot free agent worth re-signing.

I second that

I luv lamp..... and Mike Wright

It would be a good thing to resign wright as long as it isn't for too much. Don't give him Jarvis Green-type backup money.

Great news. Wright fills in very well in this defense.
I know this because I've read posts here from the more knowledgeable fans.:D

Agreed. Wright has value in that he can play multiple positions adequately, he is a good pass rusher and showed a lot of progress in that regard. But he was exposed against the run in Warren's stead. Then again, Green can't replicate Seymour's every down play when filling in for Big Sey, so who knows.

But, it would be nice to go into the draft without having to worry about DL. If Gilbert or someone like him falls into our lap w one of the 4 first day picks, we pull the trigger anyway.

Hope it happens...I like his skills and the fact he plays on ST

Green's salary is only $2 mil. I think that would be a fair price for Wright. If the Pats want to give Wright playing time incentives, that's okay with me too. If he earns them (as Green earned his incentives), it will be worth it to have him when needed.

I'll second that.

Resigning Wright (presumably to more than a 1 year deal) would give us some security with Seymour and Green having contracts up after 2009. We wouldn't need to use a 1st day pick on DE. If Jarron Gilbert fell that would be ok (if we managed to keep Seymour after 2009 Gilbert would be an upgrade over Jarvis), but it would free us up in that area. A true NT backup for Wilfork would really be our only need.

Re: The Patriots are in discussions to retain free agent DL Mike Wright.

One scenario I was pondering was leaving the #6 DL position for a high draft pick. That will give the Patriots some wiggle room in negotiations with Wilfork, Seymour, and Green who are all FAs next year. It would be very difficult to re-sign all of them at once meaning we will probably lose one or two of them. Wright is a great role player and I would love him on the team, but I don't want to see him starting next year because he's the best we got.

I'd keep the faith that a Tyson Jackson or Jarron Gilbert could bump out Le Kevin, who IIRC is also a FA after this season.

Is anybody else puzzled that none of the Patriots-Light teams (KC, Denver, Cleveland) made a run at Wright, especially given the lack of 3-4 DL types in this year's draft?

The lack of interest in Wright has definitely been puzzling to me, given the number of teams going 3-4 and the fact that Wright looked played quite well for as last year. I would have thought that Denver, Cleveland, KC and Green Bay would all have given him a hard run. I thought he was a goner at the beginning of FA, and am surprised to find him still on the market.

Remember what Evans said--Pioli specifically told him that he wasn't going to make a play for FAs that BB wants to resign.

And we got Bodden, Springs, and Taylor in FA for diddly. Free Agency is rife with mysteries.

I hope he resigns too. Isn't he the only real back-up NT option we have?

Josh may have made a similar agreement, and Manjudas is no genius anyway so he doesn't count :D

My comments were more directed at Green's cap hit of $5.4M this year.
( Miguel's UNOFFICIAL 2009 Patriots Salary Cap Information Page ), rather than his salary alone.

I admit that I don't know what would consitute a fair contract to Wright. Is $2M/year too much? $3M/year? I'll leave that up to those more qualified. However, I am pretty certain that $5.4M is way too much.

I agree with comments in general... playing incentive good... $2M might be a fair price.

Re: The Patriots are in discussions to retain free agent DL Mike Wright.

I think Wright is pretty underrated and he was out best DL in a number if games last year

I for one will be stoked if he we re-sign him
