Possible Late Round Priorities

A lot has happened in the last couple of weeks. We have done a lote of analsyis of our seven possible picks in the top 125.

We also have four late picks (comp 5th and later). Perhaps it is time to discuss sleepers again. What players do you guys have on your radar and what positions?

Are there an FULLBACKS that interest you?
What about DEFENSIVE LINEMEN? We got LeKevin in the 6th.
Are there any WIDE RECEIVERS or RETURNERS of interest?
We have two punters, so I don't expect we'll bother.

The above seem possibilities for the Practice Squad or even a long shot for the roster. For me, the positions are a total shot in the dark. I would even consider drafting two or three at the same position and see if we have anything.

I would believe that the Pats will look at and draft a Long Snapper to compete with Hoedel and then cut Hoedel or put the kid on the practice squad.

based on our current roster, i dont see how we can use all of our picks. hopefully we can either package them in a good deal for a higher pick or trade them for future considerations

we may be able to get a decent fullback in the 4th or 5th round, one capable of stepping in and contributing relatively soon

I can see NE using all of their picks without any further trade ahead, though I suspect they will be weighing opportunities for future picks.

Everett Pedescleaux DE Northern Iowa- Has great size for a 3-4 DE and had a very good Senior season. I am familiar with him from his time at Minnesota, good basketball player who wanted to attempt to play both football and basketball in school.

Marcus Thigpen RB Indiana- He's small, but I've been impressed with him as a returner. I believe he ran under 4.4 at his pro day.

Curtis Brinkley, RB, Syracuse. Shifty little runner, but can run between the tackles when needs be. Reminds me a bit of MJD. Absolutely outstanding season last year.

Might be worth a late round flyer to see what he can do.

I'm the Brinkley head cheerleader around here. What he's done the past two years being the ONLY threat for a terrible team is impressive. Seriously. The best offensive player he's ever had play with him was Taj Smith, who was good enough to be an UDFA and early camp cut last year. Brinkley had a poor Pro Day. His grandfather was diagnosed with cancer the night before, and he was wearing shoes that didn't fit him for whatever reason. I expect he'll have another Pro Day for scouts.

While I'm on the subject, I suppose it fits Sammy Morris's skill set, but if Belichick wants a young guy to pick up Heath Evans role, Tony Fiametta is the guy. Soft hands out of the backfield, willing blocker, strong special teams player, and can tote the rock once in a while or as an emergency replacement.

And since you mentioned WRs or returners, BYU's Austin Collie provides both. He blew up his Pro Day. Fifth-Sixth seems about right for him. Among NCAA leaders in PR and KR.

Hope so. This is a deep draft, but I'd rather see 4-5 quality rookies on the full roster (including PS) with a few picks traded for the future than the 2007 disaster with so many cuts.

but I guess I'm just odd that way.

Think next year. With 30 contracts expiring this year the Pats need to draft replacements this year so they can grow into the position in 2010.

Um, There were 16 rookies under contract either on the roster, practice squad, or reserve lists at the end of the season. We've seen an exodus of long time veterans this offseason. We have a significant number of veterans entering their contract year. Two of the major Free Agent signings are known for their injury history as much as their production. NE has 59 players on the roster if I've counted properly, they may have as many as 80 for the offseason. NE is projected to have 11 draft picks after Comp picks are awarded.

1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = Opportunity for 2009 Rookies.

I agree that rolling at least one pick forward into 2010 should be expected given the Pats draft day trade record. As of today, I can comfortably mock this draft and feel that every prospect I take will remain with the team in one way or another, and I see several UDFA projections whom I feel would be competitive in Training Camp. I won't be surprised if NE finishes 2009 with another 16 rookies under contract. We live in interesting times.
