The only big defensive play I ever remember Izzo making was picking off Travis Brown of the Bills in the endzone to preserve the 31-0 shutout in the last game of the 2003 season. He's basically just a really good special teamer that hardly sees the field on D.

He picked off a pass in the EZ in the 2003 season finale to preserve a 31-0 shutout against the Bills. He's strictly a ST guy, the only reason he was playing defense was because it was 31-0.

He was a special teams ace.....he never really played on the regular defensive unit. Your getting a goos STer. Was a STs captain for us for many years

good special teams player.

the patriots didnt need him. with the amount of draft picks we have, we are going to have more than the normal amount of rookies on our roster, so Im sure we are planning to have them play special teams. the 1 dimensial players like Izzo, who only plays ST's, have to go and must be replaced by players who can play ST's and either offense or Defense.

Izzo was a great special teams player. Now is a good one. Never much of a LBer though. He will provide leadership on special teams for the Jets. I wouldn't expect him to be around the first four games though. I think he may be taking an unpaid vacation the month of September courtesy of Roger Goodell.

The only big defensive play I ever remember Izzo making was picking off Travis Brown of the Bills in the endzone to preserve the 31-0 shutout in the last game of the 2003 season. He's basically just a really good special teamer that hardly sees the field on D.

The other one I remember was the play immediately preceding Willie Mac grabbing him by the face mask and tossing him like a rag-doll.

Oh, absolutely. You hit that one on the head for sure

Good for Izzo. I'm glad he found a new home.

He has done good work with the USO and tours of the military in Afghanistan and Iraq. He seems to truly enjoy the outreach.

On the other hand, earlier in his career he was apparently linked to steroids, helping him bulk up to the 220-pound linebacker he is today.

He is not a fit in a traditional NFL defense, and has played on defense only a few times over his eight years here. His one role tended to be in the goal-line formation as a sixth linebacker, where he was up and down. He had one good play, and a few plays where he was barrelled over backwards into the endzone.

On special teams, he has been terrific over the years. However, as the Pats look at their LB depth, they have a lot of young linebackers who are developing on the regular defense, and play very good special teams as well. Woods has been a good special teams player. Guyton, with his speed, is very good. Redd and Crable should be good contributors as well.

We've discussed this before, and Izzo was really looking up at the Patriots depth chart, and that would probably only get worse as the Pats consider an OLB and ILB with their multiple draft picks.

Izzo is strictly a Special teams player. At least in the Pats 3-4 defense.

So who becomes the new "old-guard" on the ST?

I like this move (away from Larry) in that it frees roster space. It's good for Larry too as he won't likely have to uproot his family.
