DT from Hampton, previously on Penn St., kicked off team for 2 fighting incidents. Weighed in bigger than expected at the combine at 6'2" 326# (had been estimated to be around 305#) but ran a 4.94 40, had a 35" vertical jump, and a 1.70 10 yard split (.01 less than BJ Raji).

Would anyone consider him for the Pats in the 4th round or later? He has major character concerns, but excellent physical potential as a true 3-4 NT.

No. We already have a Chris Baker. Look at all the problems having two Roy Williamses caused the Cowboys.

Hadn't thought of that. Maybe if he could play some TE we could line them both up in a "two Chris Baker set"?

Seriously though, he could go anywhere from the 3rd to the 6th round. True NT prospects are likely to be at a premium with all of the teams going to the 3-4, but if we got him with a 4th round comp pick or our 6th rounder the risk might be worth it.

People keep harping on a DE in the draft. I like Jarron Gilbert, and I understand that Wright currently a UFA and Seymour and Green being up after 2009 puts a little bit concern on the position. But the 2010 draft is loaded for bear with 3-4 DE candidates, and I really don't see a rookie getting a lot of playing time behind Seymour/Warren/Green unless there's an injury. In contrast, we've never had a real 3-4 NT to back up Wilfork since 2004 - the last time we won the superbowl - and I always feel like we're playing Russian roulette. Having another big body to spell Wilfork a bit and provide insurance would be very nice, and well worth a 2nd day pick to my mind. Baker and Sammie Lee Hill from Spillman are the most interesting prospects.

No.

.......

When a kid gets kicked off a team, it's very hard to gauge from the outside how deep the problem is. Some settle down and learn from the experience (like our own Vince Redd). Others are just trouble.

A couple of things that give me pause about Baker are that he wasn't booted until he faced charges in a second fight, and that he didn't stick around for his senior year at Hampton. According the nfldraftscout Baker's coach (a former NFL coach) thought he wasn't ready to go pro, but Baker never even asked his opinion. As I say, it's all just reading tea leaves from this distance, but it gives me a bad feeling.

its one thing if you help your teammate by taking your helmet off and clubbing an opponent with it........misguided, but at least meriweather's priorities were straight

if this guy is fighting with teammates, then I'd have to say no.....BUT

NFL DRAFT BIBLE - Q&A: Chris Baker, DT, Hampton

I just want to work hard to put myself in the best position on draft day. I have been pushing myself twice a day to become the best defensive lineman in the draft. I believe if the GM’s and scouts watch my film and find out the kind of person I am they will fall in love. I want to clear up all of the off the field issues and answer all the questions that many have about what actually happened while I was at PSU. I want to let America know the “Real Chris Baker.”

As a Penn State season ticket holder and Patriots fan I will have to give this an enthusiastic "Hell NO!"

To give some background...

Baker was involved in two different fights at one off campus housing apartment and another in PSU's HUB (student union building). Both of these fights fell into the mob mentality type fight.

The first happened after a player's girlfriend was harrassed by a group of students outside of a Hooter's. The player called his brother and fellow football players and they proceeded to the students' apartment to confront them. They eventually busted down the door and all hell brooke loose for about five minutes with punches being thrown and a beer bottle broken over one of the student's head. Baker was charged with two FELONIES (criminal trespass and burglary) and four related charges. His charges were the most severe since the police and eye witnesses were certain that he had thrown punches.

The second fight happened after a frat brother struck another football player while the frat was "party walking." Later that evening the football players confronted the frat brothers at the HUB (student union building) and the football player punched the frat brother. After that all hell brooke loose and at one point the frat brother ended up on the ground and Police said three eyewitnesses positively identify Baker as "brutally kicking the victim while he was on the ground, attempting to hide under a table while being pummeled by approximately 15 people."

In both of these fights Baker's actions were the most severe and he was given two years probation in May of 2008. And on July 30th he was dismissed from the team.

He was an embarrasement to Penn State Football and I don't want him anywhere near the Patriots.

Thanks for the input. I didn't know anything about the incidents. I'll take him off my list.

I should add, non way do I see this kid as an NT despite his size. He played DE at Penn State, and even though he ran well, I suspect most of that added weight is flab. Obviously he can play in a 3-4, but I don't think the nose would be his position.

I thought he'd do well at the combines back when I wrote this:

I seriously doubt he is off the Patriots' list. He definitely has issues, and what he did in the fights was cowardly and scummy. But, Belichick has drafted worse in the past. Antone Womack makes Baker look like an angel.
Well, since Womack worked out so well for the Pats, I can see why they'd try again.

Impossible to tell unless we see tape of him. How many reps did he do?

Oh, now you've got me all excited for the draft all over again!

Womack didn't work out because he couldn't play football at this level, not because he bashed a woman's face in in college.
