Makes more sense now.

According to a league source who has seen the contract, Leigh Bodden's one-year deal with the Patriots is not for the veteran minimum of $750,000, as has been reported by ESPN and NFL.com.

The source said the deal is one year for $2.25 million with $1 million guaranteed. There are no incentives in the deal, a la Shawn Springs, but the deal does include a no-franchise clause, allowing Bodden to test the market again if he has a big season in New England and an extension can't be worked out with the Patriots after the 2009 season.

I don't know. A no franchise clause? Bodden has made it throught the early goings of free agency without getting signed, he signs a $2 mil one-year deal, and his agent wants to make sure he doesn't have to take $10 mil for one year next year? It smacks of Rosenhaus turning down the $600,000 advance for Guss Scott because it was a five year deal, and opting for a year to year deal. Which lasted 2 years.

I'm willing to bet that whatever Bodden signs for next year, it will be less than $10 mil.

But one thing, he is apparently very confident of Bodden's abilities, and that bodes well for the Pats for one year, anyway.

Works for me, I like the Patriots saving money as much as the next guy but I felt bad for Bodden and couldn't help but wonder why he would take a crazy low number that he might get disenchanted with at some point.

Well if Bodden does really well and can't be signed in 2010, hopefully one or more of the young CB's on the team will leave the organization with some confidence in their backfield. I'd not be very surprised to see both Hobbs and Bodden leave after next season, chasing big dollars.

So much for the people who thought that Bodden wouldn't even last through the preseason. There is next to no chance barring a complete failure that Bodden is cut.

I figured that when I heard Bodden had an one year deal that he was going to try to use this year to jumpstart his career again and get much better deal next year with no salary cap. The no franchising thing is not a surprise to me.

If Wheatley can get his wrist through the year I think he'll be starting by the end of say week 10 ..

Bodden claims he wants to negotiate a long term deal with the Patriots during this season or beginning of next season!! I have alot of faith in bodden and we will be unstoppable on offense and defense!!

I realize that $750K is still about 10 times more than many/most of us hope to earn in a year but relative to his career, yes, I would have felt bad for him.

You think that the average income in MA is even close to $75K?!?!?! :confused3: In 2007, the median HOUSEHOLD income was $62,365. That usually assumes at least two people working. Did you inherit a ridiculous ammount of money or something?

Agreed 100%. I'm actually happier about the deal now knowing a) the Patriots are paying Bodden with the intention of him competing for a starting job b) there's nothing wrong w Bodden physically, which is something I would've considered if the deal was vet min.

Yup. There's always the chance they reach a long term agreement by the season or midseason as Bodden has alluded to. It'll give the Pats time to see if he's legit, and or if CB will still be a need going forward after the draft and based on how Wheatley/Wilhite are playing.
