The United Football League

Rumors are floating around that the league is pursuing Michael Vick.

The four coaches are:

Jim Fassel, Las Vegas
Dennis Green, San Francisco
Jim Haslett, Orlando,
Ted Cottrell, New York.

How many leagues have we had since the merger of the AFL and NFL? The NFL's minor league has been the NCAA over these past 40 years. Why should we expect this to change? The NFL draft, the pro tryouts (I mean Senior Bowl and other such games), the combines and pro days have been successful in manageing these minor league resources.

I have no problem with new leagues. Anyone can choose to watch and go to the games. Few have done so in the past 40 years. I would think that a resurgance of Roller Derby would draw more fans.

jmt57;1311263My comment was in response to [I said:
"Nobody's ever succeeded against the NFL"[/I]

Reason I said that was that this is a forum for Patriots fans ... a team that started in this thing called the American Football League
.

Competition's a good thing, and the NFL's had little of that. We've been complaining about many of the NFL's recent policies, rules, methodology whatever, so let's see how the UFL stacks up. Competition keeps people honest; I'm all for it.

There is a set amount each NFL team

has to sign draft choices and UDFAs.

Actually, that's not quite correct. The rookie cap includes all money paid to drafted rookies, and certain bonuses paid to undrafted rookies. The base salaries of undrafted rookies do not count against the rookie cap.

Thanks for the info. I never knew how a team like Tennessee

could sign 15-20 UDFAs.

Agreed. Whoever thinks we need another pro football league is delusional. Nobody's ever succeeded against the NFL.

you guys wont even check out 5 mins. of it?

I'll watch it for sure. More football is more football. Hey, it's gotta be better than the ProBowl...

lets all go try out. I'll drive.

lol - let's do it. I'll be Left Tackle for Vick's team, hehehe...

I'll go for WR, 6'3 185 pounds, run a decent 40, should have a shot...what team?

san fran maybe? Bummer that there are no new england teams at all.

But with 15-20...they still have the rules of 80 players UNDER contract..(the good news is draftees aren't signed until later...so they do not count until they do.) Thus a lot of UFDAs can be brought in for a look...Also many UDFAs appear on a try out basis and do not count.

I like the idea of competition, and will be watching, but...

Don't the owners know anything about the USFL? How that trying to go head to head with the NFL at the same time is not a good idea? If they were smart they'd play in the spring and summer when football fans are most starved for the game.

Vs. is one of my favorite networks. I will Def give this league a watch.

I'll probably give it a look-see. I'm not sure if I have the "Versus" channel or if I would have to pay extra for it.

I gave the XFL a try too, I even have a few of their games on tape somewhere. The problem with that league, though, wasn't the gimmicks, it's that the football itself was dull.

That's why I don't think this league, or a new USFL, or any other FL will succeed. Even with all the college football programs in the country, NFL teams still seem to have trouble finding guys good enough to play at that level. On the one hand that means there's plenty of guys available for these other leagues, but on the other, their rosters are full of guys who can't cut it in the NFL.

I mean, look at NFL Europe. Even as a division of the NFL, they couldn't cut it because they didn't have the players. For every Kurt Warner, there were dozens upon dozens of guys you never heard of. I used to watch those games, and it always seemed like just a step above the average preseason game.

The Arena League caught on because it modified the sport to emphasize scoring and by keeping ticket prices low; it became more about the bells and whistles than the game itself. So the Arena League doesn't really compare.

Just my $.02.

UFL kicks off it's second season next week. They have a team in Hartford. They actually got some decent former NFL players like Dante Culpepper and Jeff Garcia.

Oh and the Harford UFL games are going to be shown on NESN

Will they pay more than being on a Practice Squad?

Will they pay more than being on a Practice Squad?

I think the pay is comparable to NFL's practice squad or 3rd string. But the draw for some of these players is that you will get more exposure in the UFL by starting and playing and maybe get a real backup job in the NFL. The NFL can sign these players up to their roster later in the regular season.

Some of the names players in this league that people have heard of is
Jermaine Wiggins(from the pats)
Dante Culpepper
Jeff Garcia
Maurice Clarett
Ahman Green
Brooks Bollinger
Dominic Rhodes
Odell Thurman
Cato June
Josh Mccown
Tim Rattay
