Patriots | Springs contract update
Mon, 09 Mar 2009 07:49:45 -0700

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports New England Patriots CB Shawn Springs' deal is worth in excess of $10.5 million over three years, a source told ESPN's John Clayton. If Springs reaches all of his playing incentives he could make as much as $13 million.

Interesting. I would have thought that he would have signed a 1 year deal given his age. Then again, this is being reported by ESPN so take it with a grain of salt.

The key, of course, is how much money is guaranteed. Remember Corey Dillon's contract.

Yes, I suspect that when details emerge this will not be a 3-year deal.

Springs is a much better cornerback than the players like Fernando Bryant

and Jason Webster who signed one year contracts.

And, Clock Killin Corey Dillon had a great 1st year of his contract! Dominated the playoff game against the Colts. I'd like to see Springs do the same........:D

I still think this will be followed by them signing Bodden to a similar deal.

That along with Wheatly and Wilhite would prepare them for Hobbs departure after next season.....

Stallworth might spend just one year with Patriots - NFL - ESPN

These contracts are always filled with potential value. The key to understanding these contracts is signing bonus and the team's cap hit if the player is released.

My gut tells me the deal is similar in structure and in spirit to Stallworth's deal 2 years ago.

I'd bet a nice chunk of that money is in year three, and that he won't see it.

Considering this info came from Clayton, I'd really like to see a separate, independent report from someone like Gasper, SMY, Schefter, etc. confirming the contract information.

Exactly... or let's put it this way... it's a three year deal IF he shows he's worth $10-13 million over three years.

My guess is that we'd see guaranteed money that allows him to be cut after 1 year - making it a low risk high reward contract if he proves worth it.

Well put. Everything we've heard from Skins fans and legit analysts suggests a healthy Springs is a very good starting corner, despite his age.

Veteran cornerback Shawn Springs is the latest established veteran to join the New England Patriots, signing a three-year contract. Springs reached the deal over the weekend and now will be reunited, sort of, with longtime nemesis Terrell Owens, who signed a one-year contract with AFC East foe Buffalo Saturday.

He can make another $2.5 million in incentives. The guaranteed portion of the deal isn't available, but he probably didn't get much. While Springs can still cover, this is likely a year-to-year agreement. He turns 34 in two days.

Looking forward to watching Springs...(destroy TO :))

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I'm not doubting that the Pats have signed Springs; I was referring to how accurate Clayton is on the (limited) details of the contract that he reported. I'm curious how the contract is structured - and if the info Clayton supplied was correct.

Ah, ok. My bad.

There has been no confirmation that Springs has signed a contract.

He probably will but so far he has only agreed to the terms that

were offered by the Patriots.

Greg Lewis (WR) traded (w/ a 2009 draft pick for a 2010 pick).
Eric Alexander (LB) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
Shawn Springs (CB) signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract).
Chris Hanson (P) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
Darrell Robertson (DE) cut.

So Springs will make an average value of at least 3M per season and can earn over 4.3M per season if he reaches incentives? Sounds like starter money to me. BB must like Springs a lot.
