The latest 1st day mock is out from NFLdraftcountdown:

Draft Countdown - 2009 NFL Mock Draft

They have the Pats taking:

23 - Clint Sintim, LB
34 - Louis Delmas, S
47 - Brian Robiskie, WR
58 - Jarius Byrd, CB

Some of their other interesting picks:

12 - BJ Raji (Denver)
16 - Reye Maualuga (SD)
24 - Larry English (Atlanta)
25 - Clay Matthews (Miami)
29 - Hakeem Nicks (NY Giants)
32 - Alphonso Smith (Pittsburgh)
37 - Robert Ayers (Seattle)
38 - Alex Mack (Cincinnati)
41 - William Beatty (Green Bay)
44 - Darius Butler (Miami)
46 - William Moore (Houston)
54 - Sean Smith (Minnesota)
63 - Eric Wood (Arizona)
64 - Jarron Gilbert (Pittsburgh)

No Connor Barwin or Patrick Chung.

I would be pretty happy with that draft. I'm sure others with nitpick ad naseum about taking "so-and-so when so-and-so was still on the board," but looking at the players and positions drafted in a vacuum, I think LB-S-WR-CB seems like a realistic first day haul for the NEP.

The way their order pans out I would much rather see:

23 - Hakeem Nicks WR
34 - William Beatty OT
47 - Sean Smith CB/S
58 - Connor Barwin OLB

But that's just my list.

I like the sound of Nicks (never having seen him play :)). I just prefer WRs whose scouting report starts with "good hands, runs precise routes." Seems those guys pan out more often than the ones that read "possesses rare speed/size combo; needs to work on route-running."

To that end, Robiskie is the other WR I wouldn't mind them taking Day 1.

I'd be fine with Nicks at #34, but think the need at LB is too great to pass up at #23.

That is a pretty realistic draft card. I don't think the Pats will keep the 34th pick. I think they see real trade value there. It is usually a very needed pick for teams that may not have owned a #1. Maybe a Josh Freeman is there and some team projects him as a starter in 3 years time. Maybe Tampa Bay. I see Pats dealing this to Carolina for Peppers-Pats also give up another pick-maybe the suplemental pick they receive from Samuel loss.Pat's end up with all there real picks before Cassel deal.

I still like Alex Mack for Pat's at 23.

34. Trade for Peppers.

47. Darry Beckwith-ilb-L.S.U.

58. Aaron Kelly- wr- Clemson

89. David Bruton- ss- Notre Dame

* A realistic version. Bear Pascoe-te- would be in this conversation rd 3.

No Connor Barwin or Patrick Chung.

They have Chung going 55th to the Falcons.

Lol, imagine this board if Barwin doesn't get taken by Round Two--there'd be hunger strikes demading the Patriots trade the rest of their picks to get to the first spot in round 3.

Can't trade compensatory picks (which I think is stupid--why force a team to make a pick if they don't see value?).

Speaking of which, AdamJT13 is very late this year--what's the holdup man?!?

That's funny,,

By the way I'm in for the hunger strike, what would that be??
about 14 hours, don't know if I could make that,,,

I made it 14 days once without eating... That said not feeling the Sintim pick.

23 - Clint Sintim, LB
34 - Louis Delmas, S
47 - Brian Robiskie, WR
58 - Jarius Byrd, CB

We could certainly do worse than that. I'd rather have Barwin in there somewhere but that's not a bad draft for the Pats.

Absolutely correct. I was just projecting onto their order. But without knowing, I doubt we would pick the players in that order.

Another in the long list of drafts I'm perfectly content with even though I strongly disagree with the #1 pick. Interesting year for sure!

If I were picking, not peeking ahead, I come away with:

23 - Connor Barwin (my default #1 for now, by a hair over Beatty)
34 - William Beatty (holy smokes, he's still around! score!)
47 - Sean Smith (this one was tough, by a hair over Gilbert and a couple hairs over Chung)
58 - Jarron Gilbert (was expecting to go C/OG or WR here, but Gilbert's a great body to find this late, couldn't pass him up)

Wow. Looking over it, it's quite a collection of rare physical specimens, but not a "safe" pick in the bunch. Nervewracking, but incredible potential -- I'll take it.

Given the relative inexperience of Barwin and Mathews, it is not hard to imagine BB going after a four year starter like Sintim.

But then when you factor in game film and Sintim's pedestrian timein the 40, you have to ask yourself, why?

I'd say the odds are basically 100 percent that the Pats will trade (at least) one of their first six picks, although I don't know specifically about #34. [I could also see them trading #58 for a second in 2010 and a move up in round 3 or 4 of 2009 or somesuch.]

Nicely thought out. I would take Beatty over Barwin at #23 (based on the scarcity of potential franchise left tackles) and Barwin over Delmas at #34 (based on the other options at safety) and end up with the same draft, but your reasoning seems sound. It's a wrench to pass up Louis Delmas at #34, but Barwin is a more unique specimen, and with Delmas and Sean Smith both on the board there's a better chance of picking one of them up at #47. Plus, there are solid consolation prizes available at S in William Moore and Patrick Chung. Since we're passing on Delmas at #34, we don't know how far he would fall. If he were still around by around pick 40, I would consider packaging #89 and #58 to move up into the early 40's and try to get him, but with Sean Smith on the board as well it's probably not worth giving up the extra pick. I don't see going for both Delmas and Smith unless we were convinced Smith would play CB. At safety Smith has the better physical attributes, Delmas the more physical style of play and better intangibles.

What is a "safe" pick? A 4 year LB at a school who plays the 3-4 but who doesn't have the athletic ability or upside to justify a 1st round pick? I don't think so. I've never seen Sintim as worthy of a 1st round pick. Every year there are dozens of players hyped as 1st round picks who just don't have 1st round talent. Brandon Siler was considered a possible 1st round pick for the Pats at #28 in 2007, and he went undrafted. Cliff Avril was considered a possible late 1st round pick last year, and we passed on him 3 times after the 1st round (at #63, 69, and 78). I'd rather "risk" a pick on a player with pro bowl potential then take a "safe" pick who is consistent and solid but doesn't have 1st round ability.

I love this collection of rare physical specimens. Would have liked to have squeezed in Hakeem Nicks, but you can't have everything.

I could live with that draft. But I would like to swap Sintim for Matthews.....

We all like Delmas, but given our safety situation, aren't we better waiting even until 58 for our safety (since there are four other fine safeties), as long as we use 23, 34 and 47 with high value picks. Worst case, we trade up from 58 using our 89. The more I look at this, the less I want to use one of top three picks on a safety.
