Per ESPN.com cover page it is official

The safety, right?

I'll admit-I'm surprised that Jethro is cleaning house this year. Can't say that I'm complaining.

If Harrison isn't coming back Roy L. Williams would make a lot of sense to bring in. Him and Meriweather would look great out there. Depending on the market though he could probably make big money somewhere else.

Excepting the fact that he couldn't cover my grandmother. No thank you.

I'm willing to bet he could, which makes him a starter in games against the Jets.

Sorry, but Roy Williams is absolutely terrible. The only role he could play on this team is the role they were grooming Tank Williams for, a sort of SS/LB hybrid (and he'd cost too much money for that). He can't play safety. The Cowboys cutting him made their defensive backfield better.

Yep. If he wants to come here, I wouldn't let him do anything more than play ST. And even then, the return team would get 15 extra yards every time he tackles somebody.

He'd be a stud in the S/LB hybrid role.

But if it were just as a S, no thanks.

He managed 73 tackles and 19 assits in 2007. I don't believe they count if you're penalized on the play.

Geez, I must be in a sympathetic mood today.

First I feel for Mortenson and now I feel for Roy L Williams?!?!?!

The guy can't be as horrible in coverage as everyone is saying. I wonder how much of this is just a self-perpetuated myth or if he clearly can't keep up with the receivers. I want to believe that he has immense physical talent and if he were better coached, he would be able to be the playmaker everyone thought he would be coming out of Oklahoma.

Hope he finds a new team, but at the same time, I don't want it to be in NE. Dumb penalties bother me!

Would you care to explain how Williams would make sense? I see him and I see a guy who can't cover, who freelances, and who doesn't get along with coaching.

I'd rather have Roy ROGERS in coverage for us a this point, instead of Roy Williams.

No thanks.

How about this guy...

Roy Williams is the worst covering safety in the entire league. He can only do one thing, rip someone down from behind when they go by him. Does everyone forget what he did to Ben Watson? He's one of the dirtiest players in the game. I don't want him anywhere near the pats.

His coverage problems are overstated. He has struggled in coverage, but moreso he struggled to live up to expectations as the "top safety to enter the draft in the past 10 years".

This is a good post, I'm not a big R. Williams fan but in allot of ways his game is close to Harrison's. A couple years ago he had like 5 picks. All of which were read or film study picks. No he's not gonna lock on a guy and run around with him, but he does understand where he fits into the defense. The guy is natural playmaker.

For the right contract, I'd at least take a look. He does have some raw natural talent, and maybe Belichick could help bring that out. If not, I'm sure he'd cut him in camp if it wasn't going well. But the contract probably wouldn't be right
