Mike Wright visits Cardinals

Defensive lineman Mike Wright, who has been with the Patriots since 2005, is visiting the Arizona Cardinals today as reported by Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official website.

Wright, who enters his fifth NFL season, has experience at nose tackle and defensive end, in the 3-4 defense. Wright representatives have kept an open dialogue with the Patriots regarding his potential return

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said the Cardinals have defensive lineman Mike Wright in for a visit. Wright, formerly of the Patriots, is a 6-4, 295-pound versatile piece who could play defensive tackle or move to end when the Cards want to use a 3-4 alignment.

Would love him back at the right price, but not sure whether he'll be out of our range. The Cards have a lot of cap room, and with Smith going to Houston they have room on their DL.

Cardinals have a lot of cap space available but they also started free agency with the fewest players signed, if I recall correctly. On the DL they've re-signed Jason Banks and Keilen Dykes, while Antonio Smith signed with Houston. If they do sign Wright, then I doubt they re-sign Bertrand Berry. They also have one RFA (Gabe Watson), and one ERFA (Ray Blagman).

Selfishly, I would love to see Wright back. He adds quality depth and can really get after the QB. Excellent change of pace DL to bring.

However, I think the best thing for him would be to sign with a 4-3 team. I really think he would emerge as a starting DL in this scheme. He is tailored to more of an attacking style as the 2 gap often gets him overwhelmed in the running game. Probably why most of his success comes in passing downs.

That being said he has definitely improved against the run and getting leverage. Add that with with his quickness and you have a pretty complete package for a 4-3 team.

I can't see him staying here. He'll easily get more than what we'll offer. He'll always be a reliable back up to us, he's a starter on nearly half the other teams.

If he does sign with them, I'd be happy because it makes it 100% easier to root for the guy to do well than if he signed with an actual opponent of ours.

Hopefully he comes back and resigns with the Patriots. He did well for a back up, especially with all the injuries we had last year!

A first day draft choice seems more likely. After all, we're fine in 2009 on the line with Seymour, Wilfork, Warren, Green and Smith. With none but Warren signed for 2010, it seems prudent to add a DE. Wilfork can be franchised for a couple of years if necessary.
