Saints re-sign WR Devery Henderson

I know some here had expressed interest in him as a possible replacement for Gaffney. Looks like we can cross him off our lists.

That's actually really disappointing, I was hoping the Patriots would express some interest in him. I felt that he was really the only receiver out there that could do what Gaffney did, and maybe even stretch the field more with his speed.

Wide receiver has clearly become a DIRE need. Unless of course, Sam Aiken looks like a viable option to start next to Moss on the outside of course. :singing:

Never really had that much interest in him. Pretty one-dimensional WR with bad hands.

His drop in the Colts game notwithstanding, Gaffney can actually run routes and catch balls. Henderson is a receiver in the Bethel Johnson mold - fast as lightning but no hands or route-running ability. The Patriots can do much better for their #3.

As much as I like the guy and the player, he wouldn't have been been a replacement for Gaffney.

There are more well-rounded WR's available, and I know the Saints were very high on Devery, so it isn't much of a letdown for me.

There are plenty of "stretch the field" prospects who can be had on day 2 of the draft. Mike Wallace from Ole Miss is one, 6', 199#, 4.33 40. He may even be able to catch the ball. I'll take someone like him along with Furrey at this point.

There are also still plenty of WRs left in FA.

We have two of the best WRs in the NFL on the team. Contrast that with ILB, MLB, S, CB, where we are currently inadequate. RB is a laundry list of guys, and TE isn't exactly a strength.

The next shut down corner we sign will be the first one on the team.

How easy is it to pick up a third WR in the draft with one of our second or third round picks? Compared to getting a first string corner, ILB or MLB?

Saints fans seem to be happy they're keeping him. Several seem to think that one of their other receivers (RFA Lance Moore or Robert Meachem) may end up elsewhere.

We picked him up off the unemployment line towards the end of the 2006 season. He was great for that, but it's not like he can't be replaced or upgraded.

Seriously though, this now means that they can afford to part with Lance Moore if someone makes an offer at the second-round tender. I for one hope the Pats are the smart team that does it.

I know people are going to whine "We need defense!", but we also need a solid #3 WR, which is exactly what Lance Moore is. I'd have no problem going D with the first three picks, then getting a very good #3 WR with the Pats own #2 (which is what they would give up).

This is a much better solution than signing whatever retread WR is out there, or waiting/hoping for a drafted WR to develop/pan out.

It worked with Welker, let's do it again.

Devery Henderson - umm yay resigned!?
Lance Moore - poor man's Welker
Robert Meachem - speed guy with excellent ball skills
David Patten - ol' reliable

To be honest I really didnt even want Henderson here. The guy is the definition of a underachiever, he reminds me a lot of Ben Watson. Good for Brees though he can continue to try to break irrelevant passing records while his team once again fails to make the playoffs.

Im hoping we can fill the (small) void at WR in the draft with a late round specialty guy or just with a late FA signing.

Henderson's a speed guy with little else, Meachem's a probable bust, and there's a possibility someone will sign Lance Moore away.

I guess I was talking mostly based on what I had seen last year when they were functioning pretty well without Colston for those 7 weeks or so. I didnt imagine that their WR sitution could have deteriorated so quickly.

But one thing Id like to add is that apparently that Courtney Roby guy is also a UFA.. and on the bright side for Saints they at least still have Bush who, lets be honest, is really more of a receiver out of the backfield and return guy than a running back.

Excellent assessment of Saints WR situation. Meachem is a bit of an enigma. He's mostly remember for his brutal introduction to the NFL where he got laid out going across the middle, and then a few plays later on a crossing-route alligator-armed a ball. It was a national game, and I know that is my impression of the guy, and probably a lot of other folks', too.

However, last year he allegedly was winning over the coaches, etc., but when push came to shove and Colston went down, he was nowhere to be found. He likely is heading to Bustville as you say.

I'm aware that lance is a RFA, but I personally have a hard time believing that the Saints would let him walk that easily.

Saints fans have been waiting for Henderson since he was drafted.....I'm sure there are 1 or 2 die-hards that actually think he will be more than a #3 at best.

Who knows, I'm just glad the Pats didn't go after Henderson.
