Hey all. In my story today at WEEI.com, I try and put this deal into some kind of historical perspective.

WEEI 850AM Sports Radio - The Hot List: The art of the deal

Is this one of the biggest in franchise history? Does it even deserve to make the Top 5? Tell me what you think.

I'd say the Dillon trade was bigger than this. Dillon won the Patriots a Super Bowl. Without him, I don't think they win in 2004.

Your grade for the Plunkett trade is much too low. The Pats

got three good starters from this trade. The Plunkett that San Francisco

received was a struggling quarterback who had the heck beaten

out of him in New England. He was released by San Francisco. Plunkett

finally reached the pinacle in Oakland.

Tough to judge considering we don't know all of the pieces i.e who we traft/use picks to accuire.

The Herschal Walker deal is probaly considered one of the best trades in history, however, until we saw how these picks panned out we didn't know how good it was.

I agree, without Moss we would never of gotten to 18-0, but with Dillon we would never of won a SB which is the whole point.

Hey Einstein. We're not dealing with hypothetical trades here--trading away the "chance to draft someone doesn't count." And the Russ Francis and Mike Haynes trades ... as well as the first four trades you list there are all in the column. Not trying to rank them myself--just opening up the floor for the debate. Maybe you should read the column before you make a statement like that--sheesh.

And the Russ Francis and Mike Haynes trades ... as well as the first four trades you list there are all in the column. Not trying to rank them myself--just opening up the floor for the debate. Maybe you should read the column before you make a statement like that--sheesh.

they weren't hypothetical trades.........russell maryland and cortez kennedy were clear choices that the pats would have been making with those picks........but in any event, if you call them hypothetical, what does it make the cassel trade? no clue until the final value of both sides of the trade are defined........

the bottom line is that the matt cassel trade is way down the list.......it is a historically insignificant event

and someone also mentioned deion branch.....that was bigger, also

hell, one could even argue that trading rich gannon away for a 4th round pick was a bigger deal

but the cassel deal is one of the pats top 5 deal in the last few weeks

It's interesting to look at that list and see how drastically the value of draft picks has changed over the years. Jim Plunkett gets traded for three ones, and a two? What would a hall-of-fame quarterback have been worth back then?! Obviously the relative value of draft picks has changed due to free agency - and better evaluations of college prospects - but that is still an eye-opener, head-scratcher, whatever you want to call it.


Also - who voted for the Doug Flutie trade; Mrs. Flutie?

Agreed. apologies to Randy Moss but,

Tom Owens, defensive back Tim Fox, offensive lineman Pete Brock, defensive back Raymond Clayborn and running back Horace Ivory

At least one all time great Patriot, maybe two, maybe three...

Clayborn, Brock, Fox.

Plus Owen was a decent backuo who even started some, while Ivory had some good years rushing and returning.

Hershel Walkeresque, if you ask me. Plus they could have picked up Plunkett for a bag of chips a few years later. His resurgence was unprecedented.

It's OK to pick something that happened before 2001, Chris.

Anyone want to remember Joe Kapp? You want a better one, former ROY Carl Garrett to Dallas for running back Duane Thomas. Trade was rescinded a few days later when Thomas refused to get into a particular stance during practice.
