The Cassel/Vrabel trade is a goodwill gesture to allow draft day trades between Pats and KC.

But obviously must be mutual beneficial.

Maybe if Curry is there or Raji at 3 we trade 23 and another second.

I maybe reaching but if we are going to trade on draft day this is what we may do.

OTOH - BB values 2nd rdrs for less money.

to jump from 23 to 3 is gonna take next years first rounder or two second rounders. i'd have to see the chart value.

Yes, I hear Scott Pioli had no working relationship with Bill Belichick before this trade occurred.

Im fairly certain the reason why Vrabel is going to KC is to mentor their new stud LB... Curry.

You can't make moves in order to hope for another. We simply need to accept that there is something we don't know.

#1) The other reported offers are exaggerated
#2) The Bucs or Broncos didn't have their act together

Or something of the sort... I refuse to believe the move was made as awink, wink deal - too risky.

If by #2 you mean they made the offer too late, after Belichick and pioli had shaken on it, I'd agree.

But the third possibility would be:

#3) the Denver-Tampa Bay 3-way deal was contingent on Cassel signing a multiyear extension while the KC deal was not. Belichick perhaps thought such a contingency could drag the deal on for days or a week and he would miss out on free agents. Worse yet it could fall through after a week and by that time KC might have moved on, making the market for Matt shrink further.

I have been thinking this is a possibility. Granted, this is extremely hypothetical, but maybe there is an agreement in place where if a certain player is available (Curry) the Pats and Chiefs will swap picks. A swap of 1st rounders along with the Chiefs 2nd seems like a much more reasonable trade for Mike V and Cassell. I think it would be smart to keep something like that under wraps because if a team wanting Curry knows that Pats moved up to 3, they might be inclined to jump in front of them to pick him. If he's not available, maybe the Chiefs give a 2010 2nd. I just think Vrabel being thrown in is a little fishy, unless they were planning on cutting him and this is much better for the cap.

This scenario is a long shot at best that was floated out there by Michael "i have no insider info" Holley..

And history tells us, Pats don't do well picking in the 2nd round..

Part of selling a product to all parties is letting the other parties know what your best offer is.. Kinda like buying a car.. you use all the dealers against one another.. BB failed to do this here.. PLain and simple..

trade two of them for first rounders next year!!!

I did not hear this from Holley, but it just seems odd for Vrabel to be included in this deal for no apparent reason. I wouldn't completely ignore what Holley says however. He was telling everyone that would listen about the Pats love for Mayo a month and a half before the draft.

1. you want to wait till next year to fix this defense? A defense that doesn't have Vrabel now

2. What guarantee will there that the draft has any marque players in it.

3. Probabilty for acquiring higher picks was lost when we got ONLY a 2nd rounder for Cassel/Vrabel. Chances of us getting 1 first rounder, never mind 2, next years is slim and none and slim just walked out the door..

LIstening first thing this a.m., between 10-11, and he floated it out there..

He floats a lot of stuff out there.. ANd for a guy that wrote a great book about the pats, he has no more info than you or I..
Before the trade, Friday or THursday, he was glowing about how great BB is dealing with other GM's. How we makes them sweat.. Brings up a story about the K. Boeller trade and how BB made their gm sweat..

Personally, I think 1 n 3 is untrue.

Also, a crazier theory (or maybe not) : other teams offered a tad more for Cassel, but wouldn't take on the Vrabel contract...

then why not just cut Vrabel.. If you were going to receive more picks then dump Vrabel or ask for a price reduction..

Again cutting a versatile player in a defense that benefits from players playing multiple of positions is crazy..

Reasons :

Save a few off cap by not cutting. Avoid a Milloy-type situation by cutting. I loved Vrabel, but maybe he's just not as valuable in BB's eyes as the fan's.

Remember the glowing words for Lynch in summer 08 ? Still cut, never called back.

You have $0 on the books if you trade him vs. $2.5 mil if you cut him

No, they haven't done well in round 2.

2000- A.Klemm- adaquate at best
2001- M.Light- The one solid pick
2002- D.Branch-Good player who shot his way out of town
2003- E.Wilson-Was solid at first but tailed off in a big way
2003- B.Johnson-Showed flashes but fizzled out quickly and wore out his welcome
2004- M.Hill-My prayers are with the families of those missing players
2006- C.Jackson-See B.Johnson
2008- T.Wheatly-A project, we'll see
