Felger: Bucs and Broncos messed this up

Re: Felger:Bucs and Broncos messed this up

Much as a dislike Felger, it's a little more realistic that the Bucs and Broncos fumbled this and jumped in too late, as opposed to the Pats willingly turning down richer offers.

Re: Felger:Bucs and Broncos messed this up

If I'm Belichick I'm not waiting either. Can you imagine if he waited and Cutler decided he wouldn't report to Tampa or some crap like that? The Patriots would be stuck with a huge cap hit for two starting QB's. Belichick new it was risky to wait and went with the definite.

That's basically like a women is at home waiting for you with the door unlocked but you decide to wait on the other chick who you have to go through a friend in order to get in contact with her so she can get back in contact with you BUT she has to wait for her roomate to leave out and so on. Screw that...........No thanks, I'm going for the SURE HOOK UP.

somehow this sense is lost on people like mort who are looking for conspiracy theories

Re: Felger:Bucs and Broncos messed this up

Why is it assumed Denver would have given us both picks? That was their trade with Tampa, they could have given us any combination of picks or players.

Considering it's all hearsay, it seems stupid they had the more valuable quarterback, but were willing to give more than they had to to beat KC's offer.

But that is FESPN for you.. The joke of a network looking for other issuies.. You think the Pats would have not taken that deal, of course not it just was too little to late.. They had a month to think about this, and then decided at the last minute.. There are no problems with Mcdainels and Belichick although the crappy network full of crappy talent wants to start something..

To me, it's amazing that ESPN reports something not verifiable, and Patriot fans don't automatically (even viscerally) question the veracity of it. Do they not remember Spygate? Did they not see ESPN's conspicuously gross employment of yellow journalism? Anything reported by ESPN that begins with "I heard from a source/it is my understanding that BB/The Patriots" should not be believed. Further, if BB executed this trade, Patriot fans should have some level of faith that A) it was well thought out and B) it was in the best interest of the team. That doesn't mean it was the best deal that could be made; it means that BB thought it was the bast deal that could be made given all the factors. I would think BB has done way more than enough to be given the benefit of the doubt.

Re: Felger:Bucs and Broncos messed this up

This is an example of why we don't hate Felger nearly as much as we hate Borges. He isn't sure about what he thinks about all this, so he lays out all the possibilities in a reasonably fair way, and does the best job of writing he can. (Not as good as Borges -- but then I wish Borges weren't as capable a writer, because then he would never have befouled the media in the first place.)

I've been reading some great analogies this week!:p

Re: Felger:Bucs and Broncos messed this up

Felger raises an interesting point: both the Donkeys and the Bucs have first-year GMs and first-year coaches. And, apparently, between the four of them, they managed to screw the pooch on a trade about as badly as it could possibly be done.

And, quite frankly, I'd say that if you're angry that the Pats didn't get a first, direct your blame at Tampa Bay and Denver for being morons, not at the Patriots.

Re: Felger:Bucs and Broncos messed this up

Profootball talk is reporting that Curran is saying the same thing...

ProFootballTalk.com - Latest News and Rumors

UPDATE: Tom Curran also reports that the Bucs and Broncos showed up after Pats coach Bill Belichick had decided to pull the trigger on the trade with the Chiefs. Credit Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli for: (1) knowing that the Patriots were ready to do something right away with Cassel; and (2) getting a number and placing his order while the other teams were still loitering in the lobby of Schnitzer’s.

Re: Felger:Bucs and Broncos messed this up

The part of this that seems so crazy is that Vrabel was already in KC taking his physical 24 hours before the trade was reported involving Cassel. What the hell were Denver and TB doing at this point? One would think that McDaniels of all people should've had a clue as to what was going to happen next. Oh well. C'est le vie.

What the ... ?

It could be that Tampa is where the mess-up occurred causing the thing to fall apart, and that's making McDaniels look bad. If he'd pulled it off -- shipping Cutler to Tampa and landing Cassel -- it would have been pretty slick.

Yea, TB seems like a team that needs a compass right now and McDaniels is still so young and inexperienced. I liked JD when he was here, but now that he coaches the Donks, I'm cheering for him to flop big-time.

Re: Felger:Bucs and Broncos messed this up

This is unbelievably frustrating, to find out that we could have gotten BETTER COMPENSATION for LESS!!!!!! We could have gotten a first rounder and retained one of the most beloved Patriots (Mike Vrabel).

Can understand disapointment.. but unbelievably frustrating are strong sentiment, does anyone really believe that BB and his Front Office would shortchange the Pats??.. the reality is that TB and Denver can say anything after the trade happened and we will never know all the details.. personally we did ok considering the market value.. #34 pick and a ton of cap space..

Re: Felger:Bucs and Broncos messed this up

Let's all keep in mind, before the Skippy the Kid train coals up and leaves the station again, the Broncos' GM is Brian Xanders, and McDaniels has no control over FO stuff. Pat Bowlen is also supposed to be a rather hands-on owner on the football side as well.

Re: Felger:Bucs and Broncos messed this up

Keep "retaining beloved Patriots" as a organizational goal and these beloved Patriots and their sentimental coaches and fans can all circle the bowl together, until eventually nobody can remember where the key to the the trophy case went.

I totally agree....it isn't like it was REALLY there...a LOT of this is AFTER by the way..it cudda happened...sort of looking back. with a wanting to make like it was close. HARDLY..these GMs, Det/ TB..look silly now..and should. McDaniels took the bait and he's in a mess. The Pats ONLY deal was with KC...and what were they thinking about it when Vrabel was in KC??? I think all Pats fans thought Cassel was next..especially with no large response... so what was TB doing??? It was stupid...BUT it's easy to say sure we'll send a qst and 3rd...and send teh farm AFTER when it's too late... wasn't going to happen with ineptitude like that...they got a good deal..NOT the big one..but..I think Curran's analofy was the best.
