In a very borgesian way old Ron thinks that BB knows what he is doing here.. and in his hate for him he thinks the Pats did ok.... thought he would have gone into a seymour like rant and rave..compares Cassell to Scott Mitchell and Vrabel to McGuinest...

In the end only time will tell if Cassel is a player worth the money he’ll be paid, if Vrabel can justify his $3.2 million salary this season and if Brady’s knee is sound. But from what we know today it looks like Belichick didn’t do his old friend any favors, which is no surprise because he’s not in the business of doing favors. He’s in the football business.

Bill Belichick wouldn’t do his mother a favor,” one NFL insider scoffed yesterday. “Anybody who looks at this deal and thinks he did doesn’t know him. Or the guys he just traded.”

For once I agree with him

Ron Borges, the voice of reason. Never thought I'd say those words.

Although I was dissapointed in the compensation at first, the more I think about it the more I believe that Borges is probably closer to the truth in this situation than the fans who are ready to jump off the bridge or the media who are portraying BB as a man who's either gone soft or senile. I think there's an excellent chance that Vrabel would have been cut, and then what? No compensation for the Pats and a good chance Vrabel ends up with the Jets, another AFC East team, or Mangina in Cleveland. And I'll be surprised if Cassel ends up being a top tier QB in this league, despite his performance in 2008. The new cap space (including from Vrabel) and a great draft pick (#34) are critical components of the big picture and if there were more of a market, we wouldn't be talking about this right now.

But like the previous poster - I have to go take a shower now ;)

Bill Belichick doesn’t deliver friendly favor - BostonHerald.com

I just borrowed ""Bill Belichick wouldn’t do his mother a favor,” one NFL insider scoffed yesterday. “Anybody who looks at this deal and thinks he did doesn’t know him. Or the guys he just traded.”" for another thread. That's the crux of the matter, IMO.

I'm fine with the trade. Vrabs is about done. Cassel could become a great QB if he has the players around him. KC doesnt have a Welker, BUT, you have to imagine that Pioli knows that, and is going to get him the players he needs to be successful. That's his job. I don't know how Matty will do this year with that roster, but i think Pioli will improve the roster enough over the next 2 seasons, and Cassel will be fine.

I'm still concerned that Borges said something nice about BB :D

Well, we could say Ron Borges is finally right about something.... of course now and then BB might be wrong about something. Usually I don't give this consideration a second thought. But with the Borges seal of approval...

In Bill I trust In Bill I trust In Bill I trust In Bill I trust...

See, I think BB would do his mother any favor she asked for, just NOT if she was employed in the NFL. Let's face it, BB decided that Vrabel had to go, and as others have pointed out, instead of cutting him and letting him sign wherever he wanted (and insulting him and making him madder), like with an AFC East rival, he sent him to a team that can't really do us any harm over the next two years with his pride and salary intact.

All the national know-nothings are clamoring about how BB was duped into giving up a lot for a little, but in reality he rarely makes mistakes on these kinds of things. We now have lots of cap room and a draft pick that is high enough to get a great player, but we won't have to pay as much for him if he was higher up. That sounds very BB-ish to me. He got what he wanted out of this trade.

I don't think BB was duped, but I think he might have felt he wasn't going to get a better enough offer to justify letting this one go.

BTW--there's an article on Bleacher Report talking about this.

Borges has BB's back...in his sights while holding a butcher knife....

Also think he wanted the cap room right now, as opposed to waiting for a later time.. there is more to this picture than meets the eye..

Well he still has the obnoxious Borges tone and insinuates that BB is the devil incarnate--noticed how he slipped that"wouldn't do his mother a favor" in--but, I think he is right, especially about Vrabel. I believe he was going to be cut and BB did not want him going to the Jets, so he threw him into the Cassel deal. I don't think the Pats have been screwed, nor do I think the Chiefs have been had. I think it's a good trade for all concerned--including Vrabel.

Okay, somebody needs to find out what happened to the REAL Borges. On second thought, who gives a ####!

Anyway, Fake Borges has a pretty good take on it, IMO. Then he had to go a little stabbity on BB, of course, or his cover would be blown!

The fact that BB "sweetened the deal" with Vrabel should tell us something.

1) BB is already addressing major defensive issues (age and slowness) and Vrabel (correctly) is not part of that solution. (do you really think he's gonna leave that hole open??????)

2) His "locker room" assets (which we don't really need at this point - for 4+M anyway), makes this somewhat risky KC trade managable from thier perspective.

Lets not ignore that KC is taking the risk here (NOT US), as evidence that the trade wasn't contingent on a LONG TERM DEAL. Cassel's still playing under the tender, which tells me KC ain't zacky sold that he is thier future. Only that HE COULD BE.

Borges obviously didn't even spend the time it takes to read that article writing it.

So Pioli might have gotten rooked by Bill? Pioli who was with the team forever and knows both players well? Scott Pioli, formerly of the New England Patriots - the guy who DRAFTER MFC? Rooked by his buddy Bill?

Sorry, that's a ridiculous notion.

It was a salary dump + a quick trade end up with a practical round #1 pick.

Or maybe they couldn't agree on a long term deal and part of the deal ( contingent 2010 pick from KC) was contingent on them getting Cassel to sign a long term deal. From KC's perspective, it minimizes their outlay ( a mere second rounder) in exchange for what could be their QB of the future. if it doesn't work out, they move on to someone else in 2010. If it does, they either franchise him again in 2010 for $$$$ or sign him to a long term deal...

Are you saying that once/if a long term deal is signed, another pick will come into effect? Wouldn't this be reported by the media?

I disagree.

Belichick definitely did Vrabel a favor. Vrabel was going to get cut by tomorrow morning.
