My early draft, post Cassel trade prediction...

I think that with all the picks the patriots have and the limited roster space for all of them I predict that the patriots will package some picks including #34 to move up into the late part of the first round.

My thoughts on this is so that they can get a guy they want signed to a 5 year contract rather than a 4 year deal.

I'd think that #47 and a third would be enough to get them into the late 1st. The Pats have not drafted so well in round 2 lately, so I'd be more assured with 2 1st round picks and a near 1st round pick.

Part of what you are paying for is the 5 year contract. I would favor using a 5th and 3rd to move up with both #34 and #47. That would give us three late firsts. But I agree the player needs to have the value and to be project not to be there the next time we pick.

Of all the years to trade up I'd hope not to do so this season. We have the ability to get some talent with 1st round grades if we hold onto the first 3 picks. It would have to be a player that would really knock your socks off that slipped pretty bad. We have alot of work to do to get this team's defense up to championship caliber.

I wouldn't mind a trade with 2010 draft choices as long as it was for multiple picks or a real crappy team with the possibility of a top 15 pick.

However I think realistically that with all the 3-4 OLB's expected to be there at #23, Mathews, Cushings, Sintim, English, Barwin and Kruger, I could easily see BB moving down 4 to 6 spots in the first round and still getting one of the players he wants.

ITA This draft isn't top heavy at all. From a defensive standpoint it's Aaron Curry and then a huge drop off. And since Curry is out of reach there's no reason to trade up for a guy like Maualuga or Malcolm Jenkins when guys like Sean Smith and Connor Barwin are likely to be there at 23 and 47.

I'd rather have two players signed to 4-year deals than one signed to 5, especially when we talk about how so much of the talent is about the same from pick 20 to pick 50 or so.

Unless you've got your heart and your eyes set on a special player in that range, I don't think it's smart to lower your odds of finding a keeper or of having two contributors just to gain an extra year on a contract.

I tend to agree - I think from #23 right down to the bottom of the 2nd there's a lot of comparable talent and we could go any number of ways

LB - English, Barwin, Cushing, Sintim, Lauraintais
S - Delmas, Chung, Johnson, Moore
CB - A Smith, S Smith
WR - Iglesias
OT - Unger, Loadholt

If we ended up with any combination of the above id be happy

So if they take Patrick Chung or Connor Barwin at #47, they'd be likely to bust. However, if Belichick trades up to #30 to make sure he gets his pick, you'd feel better about him?
