I'm watching NFL Total Access right now and they had a graphic comparing Brady's '01 stats with Cassel's from last year. They pointed out that Matt did (slightly) better than Tom in all the categories (completion percentage, passer rating, etc.)

And I thought, Yeah, but Matt had way more talent around him in his first year than Tom did in his. Then again, Tom's team won the freakin' Super Bowl. But then again again, both teams finished 11-5; in 2001 that was good enough for a #2 seed, this year it wasn't enough to make the playoffs.

I ain't trying to start another argument, and it'd be pointless anyway now that Matt's gone. I just have to wonder if comparing these guys on their first seasons is really apples to apples, ya know?

The 23 other threads and 2000 comments say No.

I like apples. Red Delicious apples from Washington might be my favorite, but I think Macintosh apples make the best applesauce. It's a bit of a dichotomy, but I can live with it.

Good Lord. How many of these threads do we need?

Just one argument to completely blow this away: MC had about a 3 times better offense than Brady

Well, Granny Smiths make an excellent apple pie.

They do indeed. I might have to make one tonight now that you have given me the idea. My mom gave me an EXCELLENT recipe.

Different OC, different competition, different strength of schedule, different team around them... yeah, pretty much pointless.

With or without cheese?

I don't think this is a meaningless thread at all, because you will certainly hear a lot of Brady to Cassel comparisons in the coming years IF Cassel flops in KC. If he flops, people will say Brady is a system QB, like Cassel.

This is just more grist for the mill.

I think the days of people calling Brady a system qb are long gone.

No, I don't. And it's not. Among other things, remember that Brady was 11-3 as a starter. The first two losses in 2001 were Drew Bledsoe's losses. Brady came up to speed far more quickly and efficiently, AND as you point out, with far less talent around him.

God bless Matt Cassell, but it is absurd to try try to compare him to Brady.

To further the point, it was Brady's 2nd year in the NFL not his fourth.

Not really. You never know what to expect.

If you want to trash a Patriot, say the system makes them look good.

If you want to trash Bellichick, say the players make him look good.

The Patriots drive people crazy.

Dude! Red Delicious? You have got to try a Pink Lady. Now THAT's an apple!
